MaSc 50 Basic Math MaSc 115 Precalculus Math MaSc 116 Introduction to Mathematics MaSc 141 Calculus MaSc 142 Calculus II MaSc 241 Calculus III MaSc 242 Differential Equations In Addition How did you choose to study math I enjoyed Math especially geometry in high school and decided to continue studying math in college I enjoy Math because it is both an art similar in creativity and freedom to create like jazz and a science with practical applications Studying Math can help one become a better problem solver in general not just in the particular discipline of Mathematics I also enjoy helping other people understand something new which is one of the main reasons I decided to become a teacher What about teaching energizes you I first became interested in teaching when as a student I was a problem session leader in Statistics at Bethel College It felt good to hear students say after class that they felt like they understood at the end of the session what they had not understood at the beginning of the session While it is not always enjoyable for either the student or teacher the struggle with a problem and learning the perseverance to keep trying to solve a problem actually energizes me as a teacher To see students gain self confidence as problem solvers and discover they can without the constant guide of a teacher understand new ideas and solve problems themselves is a joy to me I also enjoy learning and an important part of teaching is to be continually learning How does your background and educational experience shape your teaching at Hesston My family includes many teachers My father and three of his four siblings as well as the spouses of those three were all educators Growing up on a farm made me realize the practical applications of math I once had a student who thought that farmers should study math as it related to farming carpenters should study math relating to building etc I agree that math should be taught in a useful practical way when possible My education has helped me realize the power of the logic and language of math as well We may learn applications of math or at least the power of the logic and language of math in ways we never would have imagined as we learn more While I have lived in the Midwest most of my life I have also lived in several other areas which I feel shape my teaching at Hesston College My wife and I lived and worked for three years in Egypt under the auspices of Mennonite Central Committee working as teachers in both an elementary school and at summer institutes for adults I enjoy having international students in my classes and watching students from different cultures learn from each other My family and I also lived in Lancaster County Pennsylvania for eight years While Pennsylvania is not too different from Kansas ok Kansas is flatter I have some understanding

smooth and precise and really get into the ATC system It s really fun to take a student into the clouds for the first time and to see their smiles when they break out on top with the magnificent views How does your background and educational experience shape your teaching at Hesston I am a 2001 graduate of Hesston College s aviation program I spent the next few years flight instructing in the Kansas City area while obtaining my B A in religion with a music minor My well rounded academic experience helps me understand students from a variety of perspectives The leadership training and experiences that were part of the religion major have helped me take on a variety of roles such as being responsible for the development of the department s Instrument program My music education also allows me to stay connected with the music program on campus What do you most want to know about prospective students I want to know what motivates them Why do they want to fly What kind of energy are they going to come with to help them succeed in this program How do you connect with students in the program Working at our airport facility provides unique challenges because I do not get to the main campus on a regular basis However when students arrive at the airport they are very willing to just sit down and talk about their lives and what is happening on campus This helps them connect with me as an instructor and relieve some stress so they can transition into a focus on their flight lessons I always listen to the unique challenges that each student brings and try to address their specific issues and learning styles What do prospective students need to know about Hesston

s a vulnerable thing struggling with this machine using leverage and strength and muscles you didn t know you had and usually having minimal success at first I like that view into how students work and finding ways to help them master this skill That day also best embodies the best thing I learned in college Fail Fail Fail And get back up every time until you don t fail Your best ideas and work will come from being comfortable with and unafraid of failure This is a good safe place to wrestle with that and come back strong Courses Taught Art 102 Introduction to Ceramics Art 202 Ceramics II In Addition My personal art site Hanna Eastin blog What draws you to the field of art In college I was initially opposed to majoring in ceramics because my mother is a potter and I and my freshman ego decided to do something else Then when I took Ceramics I thinking it would be easy I discovered that I actually loved the weight tactility and frustrations inherent in clay work It was also not easy and having been humbled I found great satisfaction in making clay sculpture Over the years I ve grown to love the technical aspects as well glaze chemistry kiln firing even equipment repairs What about teaching energizes you I love the honor of sharing my technical and aesthetic geek outs with students and getting them to see the magic that can happen and have geek outs of their own What are your favorite courses to teach I teach two classes currently Ceramics I and II and they both stand out for different reasons My favorite thing about Ceramics I is getting to see students grow comfortable with working tactilely I find this to be a waning
