God s perfect plan for my life What opportunities have you had at Hesston College to practice skills you will use as you further study your major and get in to a professional career As a nursing student I have been blessed with expert nursing professors who are not only extremely competent in their knowledge of nursing skills but who have taken a personal interest in my life outside of nursing Because of their example I am being trained to be a nurse who provides holistic care excellent physical care but also emotional and spiritual care That is a rare gift and I am very thankful for it What is the best part of your Hesston Experience My favorite part of Hesston College is being included in the diversity of the campus There is nothing in the world that gives me more joy than to be in a community of people from all over the world all with different stories perspectives religions and cultures The diversity of the students and faculty at Hesston College has enriched my life and taught me so much about what the kingdom of God truly is What activities and leadership roles have you been involved with at Hesston College Along with being a nursing student I have had the privilege of being on the basketball team a resident assistant on the Inclusion and Diversity Council a tutor a few campus jobs Gospel Choir and many other activities here and there How is college different than what you expected When I heard that Hesston was a Mennonite College my biggest fear was that there would be a lack of diversity My first day on campus I was relieved to find that Hesston College is a diverse place that is rare and beautiful The diversity of the students and faculty has enriched my life How has Hesston College helped prepare you for your future academic and career pursuits Each of my roles at Hesston College has presented its joys and challenges As a Christian I have been amazed at how I have seen Christ present in each separate role somehow bringing them all together One of the many lessons God has taught me throughout my time here is how to see people through His eyes to see their beauty and potential and to find ways to cultivate that potential In the times when I have been able to do this I have been amazed by the things that God has done in my life and in the lives of the people around me How have you experienced community at Hesston College Each activity and role I have taken on presents community in its own way I love that there are so many different communities to be a part of yet there is also one all encompassing community as well So rare How have you been supported and nurtured by faculty and staff There are too many examples of this for me to even get started on but

to take it over from my parents one day While Hesston does not offer any specific agriculture classes I was able to get the prerequisites I needed to transfer to another college and finish my degree What is the best part of your Hesston Experience It is difficult to pick just one best part Erb Moon the cross country team camp fires and the spring break chorale trip to Arizona and New Mexico are all in the running for my favorite experiences One thing that sticks out is a house church that was formed at a faculty member s house my freshman year The house church was based around silence and discussion I was one of the few freshmen that attended so I sat back and soaked in the wisdom from the sophomores The group was always a highlight to my week How have you been challenged spiritually or experienced spiritual growth at Hesston College My faith grew exponentially at Hesston I went to a public high school so it was a nice change to have faith talked about in almost every class Taking classes related to the church and the Bible provided opportunities for growth I attended Campus Worship and other Bible studies which helped shaped my faith It was refreshing to find a place where people talked about God often What adjustments did you have to make transitioning to college life I had to start studying for classes There is a lot more homework in college than in high school Academically these were the biggest transitions It was also a big move going from living on a farm to the dorms I was not use to having the opportunity to hang out with friends on week days How have your instructors influenced you While all of my instructors

Fueling a dream I have a dream to impact the world in a big way I want to have my own school with a curriculum that teaches students how to think instead of what to think So much of what is taught in school systems requires students to memorize facts and cuts out opportunities for real life application Schools should not generate followers but thinkers who are creative enough to solve the problems that exist What people do and study should be driven by curiosity not by being told exactly what to do Much of my dream s inspiration comes from Hesston s faculty who care about students opinions and try to get us involved That model of teaching and caring is something I will take with me At Hesston I have been taught a lot about people and personalities which has helped me love and understand people more Multicultural experiences In Ethiopia I attended a French school that focused on applying everything we learned to our own life and society I decided I wanted to go to another country to finish my schooling and my parents agreed to it so I attended Lancaster Pa Mennonite High School for my last two years of high school It was there that I first learned about Hesston College when an admissions representative visited the school He did a great job of explaining what Hesston had to offer I had a feeling this was where I was supposed to be A valuable community Hesston has given me many opportunities to be involved on campus I was a resident assistant a member of the Peace and Service Club a student ambassador and a First Year Experience scholar Hesston s faculty and staff have a special way of showing students they value us and our

Assistant Hesston Experience I was a 2012 13 resident assistant Nursing keeps me busy so I have to limit my involvement The Right Choice For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a nurse When I got to Hesston I began to question my decision to study nursing I enjoy relating to people and connecting with them on a deeper level and I realized there were several careers that would allow me to do that Being in Hesston s nursing program and interacting with my instructors has reaffirmed my decision to become a nurse Nursing is more than physical care it allows me to be encouraged by patients I hope I can be an encouragement to them as well Not Afraid of a Challenge The nursing program is very challenging which I love Being challenged makes you think critically and stimulates the mind The instructors are really what make the program though They are wonderful people who are always ready to help encourage and inspire Quiet Moments Nursing keeps me very busy Between class studying and clinicals there are times when I feel like I am going nonstop During one of those times I was feeling the need for quiet time That week at a hospice clinical I worked with a patient who was near death Even though she knew she would soon die she was at peace inspiring and an encouragement to me She talked about how she always had Bible study on Thursdays so for about a half hour we read the Bible together It was exactly what I needed that week just a little time to be still It was a critical moment for me in my nursing career and showed me the mutual impact between nurse and patient About Jessica Jessica shows
