pitching mentor Brian Holman a Wichita area coach and former major league pitcher to tell him he was itching for a change When Dustin called me for advice during a disappointing freshman year I thought Hesston College might be a good fit said Holman who started working with King when he was 12 That conversation helped set King on a life altering path It s a path that has allowed King to be an impact player on a competitive collegiate team while gaining leadership and academic opportunities that are preparing him to pursue his dream of becoming an optometrist Familiar with Holman and his shared interest in developing the whole person as a student athlete Hesston College head baseball coach Rob Ramseyer was immediately interested in having King join his squad When Brian told me about Dustin I was confident we were talking about a quality person Ramseyer said When we recruit a pitcher we look for guys who can command multiple pitches for strikes are great competitors and are going to love and care about their teammates Dustin has done all three With Ramseyer in pursuit King was initially leery of the cost to attend another private college He says his campus visit shed light not only a great opportunity to immediately compete for innings but to do so affordably Within weeks of the visit he was in Since signing with the Larks King has found himself challenged both on and off the mound He s taken each challenge and turned it into an opportunity to both improve himself his teammates and his community The coaches have helped me become a better person King said As players we re pushed to do well in the classroom and I ve had opportunities to take on leadership roles within the team that have spilled over to the campus A key part of last year s pitching staff that led the Larks to a school record tying 26 wins King led the team in wins and innings pitched With another big year King may position himself at the top of several major career pitching records at Hesston More important than the wins however is where and when they ve occurred During a March 19 game at local power Hutchinson Kan Community College King tossed seven scoreless innings of relief yielding five hits without a walk in a 2 1 Hesston extra inning win Later in an early April home game King again beat the Blue Dragons this time going eight innings with seven hits and three runs allowed in a 6 5 Larks win King s mental toughness was on full display in the Larks season finale a May 17 super regional start at Murray State CC Tishomingo Okla Despite giving up a leadoff homerun and several early hard hit balls King stayed on the mound for all nine innings in a 5 3 loss to the eventual NJCAA Div II World Series Champions King s growth has not been limited to

everyone was incredibly welcoming and receptive Why are you glad you started at Hesston College By far the most beneficial part of Hesston has been transitioning to the college atmosphere I wouldn t say it s more or less difficult but I ve been prompted to push myself rather than just do what s expected of me and I feel like I ve taken advantage of that push What is your major and what factors helped you choose it I m a double major in music and math In a perfect world I d be a pure music major However thinking realistically I ll also have lots of experience with math which I also really enjoy to fall back on What opportunities have you had at Hesston College to practice skills you will use as you further study your major and get in to a professional career It s been really helpful while at Hesston to be able to immerse myself in music I m taking lessons in voice saxophone piano and composition and am able to keep up with and enjoy each one What is the best part of your Hesston Experience The best part of being at Hesston has been interacting with unique students and faculty alike How have you been challenged spiritually or experienced spiritual growth at Hesston College The largest spiritual development I ve had at Hesston is the opportunity to be a ministry assistant At the beginning of my Hesston Experience I wouldn t have pegged myself as a spiritual leader but being recognized and asked to apply for the position was both an honor and a moment of difficult discernment How have your instructors influenced you The majority of the instructors I ve had or interacted with have really encouraged me to think for

I not attended Hesston I now know how to interact with people from many different cultures and backgrounds and I m still improving these skills each day What is your major and what factors helped you choose it My major is business and the big deciding factor with choosing this major is the economy Many people blame the economy for a lot of things that happen I want to be fair by learning about America s economy how it is structured and the downfalls to how we run things so I can make informed decisions and judgments What is the best part of your Hesston Experience The best part of my Hesston Experience has been getting to know people in such a close knit community Of course you make friends in a large college setting but the relationships you build here seem to be much closer and personal with students and professors alike What adjustments did you have to make transitioning to college life Homework I rarely studied in high school and I knew that would have to change when coming to college I had to set aside specific times where I would study and complete work so that I didn t fall behind How has Hesston College helped prepare you for your future academic and career pursuits I now have an understanding of how business works and the type of connections and concepts you must understand in order to be successful in the field I have also been forced to study in order to keep up with my classmates which will help me in future academic settings How have your college experiences and classes transformed your worldview I now see the world as many different races creeds and cultures I had a very narrow view of the world before

made friends but also established relationships I ve been poured into as a student so that I may give to others this is what I consider my Hesston Experience What is your major and what factors helped you choose it I chose biology pre medicine as my major in order to become a physician assistant I am so excited about my future career I enjoy caring for people but also love being able to explain what is happening to people s bodies and why What activities and leadership roles have you been involved with at Hesston College In addition to academics cross country has been a large part of my Hesston Experience I love the closeness of our team along with our annual trip to Colorado over fall break I ve learned so many things from pushing myself physically and leading a team as a captain Other activities such as choir being a resident assistant and simply spending time with friends have been equally rewarding How is college different than what you expected My academic experience at Hesston has been surprising I took college classes my senior year of high school at a local university but when I got to Hesston I quickly learned that I would have to take studying to a whole new level The most surprising thing however was that I began to love science At the beginning I thought I would simply endure all the grueling science classes in order to get my degree but the more I ve learned the more I love it My instructors are responsible for this Their curiosity for the natural world is infectious and if there s anything that will help me to succeed in my education and future career it s loving what I do How have your instructors

a Mennonite home and my parents encouraged me to attend a Mennonite college I knew I wanted to fly and since Hesston is the only Mennonite college with an aviation program it was a natural fit Hesston is a comfortable fit for me in terms of size as the college is about the same size as my high school Lancaster Pa Mennonite High School How did you become interested in aviation I have always had an interest in flying I grew up going to airshows and was amazed that pilots could operate something so complex Anytime I would travel by airplane I would wonder at the process of flying the aircraft and how everything worked What are some highlights of your Hesston Experience I enjoy the big weekends on campus like Homecoming and Thanksgiving where I can meet alumni People often see me wearing my Aviation Department shirt and will strike up a conversation Last year I met an alumnus who is a nurse and a pilot He flies four days a week and works as a nurse the other three I like hearing those kinds of stories I also enjoy talking to parents of current students and hearing about their experiences at Hesston and how the campus has changed since they were students Who at Hesston has been most influential for you Dan Miller Director of Aviation Sheldon Goerzen and Bob Harder flight instructors are all great encouragement for me When times seem overwhelming they are happy to give me advice I also appreciate my relationships and the conversations I have with Darlene Corona who I worked with in maintenance over the summer Gary Oyer who I lived with during the summer and Michele Hershberger who has been my mod mom both years What are your future career goals
