    1959 the institution has been known as Iowa State University of Science and Technology Music has been a part of the university since its earliest years In 1880 when Iowa State catalogs began to be printed on a regular basis it was clear that music was a vital part of the activities at the Iowa Agricultural College In addition to individual lessons in piano organ or voice students could register for chorus and harmony classes In 1888 the Music Department was formally recognized as an academic program of the university A sight singing class had been added by that time violin guitar and music theory had been added to departmental offerings by 1891 and by 1896 courses in the history of music were being taught Morrill Hall was used by the Music Department from 1891 1981 for faculty offices classes rehearsals and performances The 1895 Pilcher pipe organ with its fancy painted pipes saw 20 years of use for lessons recitals and chapel services In 1908 the Ames Conservatory of Music was officially established as a department of the college At that time private instruction was available in voice keyboard instruction stringed instruments and brass instruments classes were taught in harmony counterpoint canon fugue analytical harmony form composition and music history ensemble experiences included chamber music chorus and band Also in 1908 artists diplomas were offered in addition to teachers certificates in music In 1910 a course in physics of music Physics 508 was offered and was required of all regular music students and a supervisor music course was offered for those students who wished to specialize in teaching music in the public schools Apparently such certificates and artist s diplomas were offered through 1915 In the ensuing years the vocal and instrumental performing organizations experienced considerable growth ISU Marching Band 1923 The booklet Profiles of Iowa State University History 1968 devotes a chapter to 36 individuals who made major contributions to the shaping of the university during the first 100 years of its existence It is significant that Tolbert MacRae Head of the Music Department 1920 48 is included in this influential group Concerts by world renowned artists had apparently been an important part of Iowa State s development from the earliest years Some of the eminent artists brought to campus each year began to be listed in ISU General Catalog in 1916 a practice that continued through 1948 except for the 4 year period 1939 43 Included were such names as Sergei Rachmaninoff Fritz Kreisler Pablo Casals Mischa Elmann and Maud Powell and symphony orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra The tradition of enhancing the life of the university community with concerts by leading artists of the world continues today through the efforts of the ISU Performing Arts Council Ames International Orchestra Festival Alvin Edgar Fund for the Performing Arts and the special attractions sponsored by the Iowa State Center ISU Marching Band at Homecoming Football Game 1938 Dr W Robert Parks became

    will depend on funding and student worker availability The computer lab is funded largely through student computer fees and complies with LAS Computer Advisory Committee LASCAC requirements MIDI work stations with various music software programs are available for student class use Suggestions and or questions regarding the computer lab should be directed to Chad Jacobsen Music Room 056 Computer Lab Schedule Fall 2012 Starting 1 27 13 Last Updated 1 24 2013 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 8 00 closed closed closed closed closed closed closed 9 00 closed closed closed closed closed closed closed 10 00 closed open closed open closed open closed 11 00 closed open open open open open closed 12 00 closed open open open open open closed 1 00 closed closed open closed open open closed 2 00 open open open open open open closed 3 00 open closed open closed open open closed 4 00 open open open closed open closed closed 5 00 open open open open open closed closed 6 00 open open open open open closed closed 7 00 open open open open open closed closed 8 00 closed open open open open closed closed 9 00 closed open open open open closed closed 10 00 closed closed closed closed closed closed closed The Computer Lab will not be open during holiday breaks Practice Facilities Practice rooms are available in Music Hall while classes are in session during the following hours Monday Sunday 7 00 am to 11 00 pm When classes are not in session the building is usually open weekdays from 7 00 am 5 00 pm For complete information about hours when classes are not in session check with the Main Office Students wishing reserved times may sign up in the Department Office beginning the first day of classes each semester A schedule sheet of reservations is posted on each practice room at the beginning of the semester Reserved rooms are relinquished if not occupied within 15 minutes of the reserved time Grand piano practice rooms are locked Piano majors and other students with permission from the piano faculty may be issued a key for these practice rooms Use of the carillon harpsichord or organ practice rooms and issuance of keys for those rooms requires permission of the instructors Larry Curry will issue key cards upon approval of appropriate instructors Organs Harpsichords The department owns four pipe organs a seven stop two manual tracker action instrument by Wolff of Quebec and two two manual mechanical action organs by Lynn Dobson of Lake City Iowa one of three stops and one of seventeen stops A large three manual tracker organ of John Brombaugh situated in the Recital Hall is available to experienced organ students for lessons accompanying and performances A harpsichord is available a large two manual instrument by William Dowd These instruments are available for departmental events provided that the performer is a qualified organist harpsichordist and that permission has been obtained Students should contact Tin

    Course Offering Changes Music Lab Hours NEW areas of study The Marketplace Contact us Amara Piano Quartet Members of the Cyclone Marching Band performing at the Pinstripe Bowl in New York City Iowa State University Wind Ensemble Iowa Statesmen Members of the ISU Symphony Orchestra Iowa State Singers in Seoul Korea May 2011 Jazz I in a recording session Members of the Wind Ensemble in front of Mozart s house in Salzburg Austria during their 2011 tour Cantamus Simon Estes The F Wendell Miller Distinguished Artist in Residence Jazz II Cyclone Marching Band Feature Twirler ISU Symphony Orchestra Innovation joins tradition as the Amara Piano Quartet rises anew from the brilliant history that defined its predecessor the Ames Piano Quartet The ensemble chose the name Amara to send a message that is new yet classic that combines a sense of mystery and timelessness with a beautiful sound It is a name that in the great literature and languages of the past had associations with mythic paradise with immortality and the eternal and with something beloved Like the new name suggests the quartet will continue to perform for its audiences the immortal beloved music of the past while it looks also to commission new compositions to become the masterpieces of the future For the Amara Piano Quartet the 2012 season is a time to build upon a history of over 30 years of concerts by the previous Ames Piano Quartet as cellist George Work and violist Jonathan Sturm welcome violinist Boro Martinic Jercic and pianist Mei Hsuan Huang to the ensemble following an international search Audiences across America continue to greet the APQ s diverse programming blend enthusiasm and to comment upon the eloquent symphonic sound the ensemble delivers from the stage The Washington Post aptly described the piano quartet as one of the most heavenly combinations of instruments around and reviews of concerts and CDs include praise such as the four generated nearly limitless excitement arching lyricism poetic eloquence and great accuracy and one of the best chamber music recordings of the century Now with individual members drawn from orchestral concertmasters competition winners outstanding teachers and with over 100 years of combined experience brought to their performances the Amara Piano Quartet is poised to become a name recognized world wide in the circles of chamber music excellence The new quartet continues a long tradition as an ensemble that has toured to critical acclaim throughout the United States giving concerts in cities like New York Los Angeles Chicago Detroit Denver San Diego Washington D C During the 2013 14 season the Amaras have engagements to perform in Canada Virginia Ohio and Iowa and have plans to continue the former quartet s notable tours to Mexico Cuba Europe South Africa and the Far East The Amara Piano Quartet is in residence at Iowa State University and its members all present ISU Music faculty include left to right George Work cellist Mei Hsuan Huang pianist Jonathan Sturm violist and Boro Martinic violinist Since

    the Martha Ellen Tye Recital Hall Listen to Concerts via Music Archive Click here to listen to live webcast of noon time concerts from the Stanton Memorial Carillon Keep Up On Classroom Schedule Calendars Course Offering Changes Music Lab Hours NEW areas of study The Marketplace Contact us Acceptance Becoming a Music Major For Entering Freshmen Welcome We are excited that you are interested in becoming a music major at Iowa State University Below is information regarding the process to become admitted and receive a music scholarship General Requirements To be accepted as a music major students must demonstrate an appropriate level of performance on an instrument or voice as well as potential for successful professional work in music In addition all students must complete placement examinations in music theory and piano which may be taken during summer orientation the first week of the fall semester or by appointment Placement examinations for piano and music theory do not affect your acceptance as a music major Students who are interested in learning about their preparation for college level music theory can take a sample examination on music fundamentals here Auditions to become a music major for the 2014 2015 academic year will be held February 13 15 2014 If you are unable to attend one of the February dates you should contact the faculty in the appropriate area to schedule an alternative audition time To apply to become a music major and to be considered for a music scholarship you must submit both the Application for Music Major and or Music Scholarship and Recommendation in Support of Application for Music Scholarship completed forms This recommendation should be submitted by a school music director and or a private teacher who is familiar with your musical ability Your application file will not be
