  • Extension | Soybean Research Laboratory
on delivering research based information to a variety of clientele Our group serves farmers crop consultants agricultural professionals and other university extension personnel Most of our programs are within the state of Iowa but we travel throughout the Midwest to deliver content Our program topics are mostly focused on promoting IPM tactics such as host plant resistance sampling economic thresholds crop rotation and buffer strips We strive to provide sustainable recommendations so that farmers can reduce production costs but still protect yield Although most of our extension is soybean insect related we are also involved with corn insect management too Each year we speak to about 4 000 people This includes a combination of field tours and lectures In addition we produce a number of publications to aid in IPM for field crops There are several field guides compendiums and other resources available to help make timely management decisions in corn and soybean Publications 2014 Yellow Book pdf 2013 Yellow Book pdf 2013 Conserving bees in Iowa field crops pdf 2013 Soybean Aphid Field Guide pdf 2012 Yellow Book pdf 2012 Field Crop Insects Compendium pdf 2011 Yellow Book pdf 2010 Yellow Book pdf 2009 Yellow Book pdf 2009 Speed

  • Killing Malaria Parasites: How Mosquito Blood Cells Shape anti-Plasmodium Immunity | Department of Entomology
in the filarial worm Brugia malayi at the mosquito vector mammalian host interface Brendan M Dunphy The Iowa State Entomology Department Killing Malaria Parasites How Mosquito Blood Cells Shape anti Plasmodium Immunity Monday November 10 2014 09 00 Event Type Seminar Vector Entomology interview seminar E164 Lagomarcino Hall Ryan Smith Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Baltimore MD Abstract Mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles serve as the obligate vectors of the malaria parasite Plasmodium The mosquito innate immune response is a major determinant of parasite developmental success in its vector and in disease transmission To date a number of components of the mosquito innate immune response have been described that modulate Plasmodium development yet our understanding of the mechanisms that limit Plasmodium development remains limited Evidence suggests that parasite numbers are largely influenced by an early phase that targets ookinetes as they reach the basal lamina of the mosquito midgut through the exposure to complement like components of the hemolymph and a late phase response that limits oocyst survival Previous reports have implicated the role of a LITAF like transcription factor LL3 in the Anopheles gambiae immune response Following LL3 silencing oocyst numbers
