  • Dr. Steven P Bradbury | Department of Entomology
    2015 Dr Bradbury was appointed as a professor of environmental toxicology in the Departments of Natural Resource Ecology and Management and Entomology He is also a faculty member in ISU s Toxicology Program From July 2014 through July 2015 Steve served as a visiting professor in ISU s Department of Entomology Dr Bradbury is contributing to research and extension in University wide toxicology environmental agriculture and natural resource science and policy programs Areas of emphasis include pesticide resistance management pollination services monarch butterfly conservation and sustainable agriculture including the role of integrated pest management within nested layers of governance Steve s areas of teaching include toxicology pesticide and chemical risk assessment and related policy topics Steve retired from the U S Environmental Protection Agency in 2014 after 30 years of public service During his last 4 years in EPA he directed the Agency s Office of Pesticide Programs OPP As a senior executive in OPP Steve led the evaluation of new and existing pesticides including biotechnology products and the integration of Federal pesticide registrations within national state and stakeholder initiated programs addressing emerging high impact pests pesticide resistance and water quality endangered species and pollinator protection Prior to joining OPP in 2002 Steve had over 15 years of experience in EPA s Office of Research and Development leading research to advance human health and ecological risk assessments in support of water quality pesticide and industrial chemical programs Steve has a BS in Molecular Biology University of Wisconsin Madison and a MS in Entomology Insecticide Toxicology and a PhD in Toxicology and Entomology Iowa State University He has published over 70 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has an extensive record of invited presentations at international and national scientific conferences In 2014 Dr Bradbury received the Henry A Wallace

    Kristine J Schaefer Pest Management and the Environment Dr Keri Carstens Faculty Collaborator Assistant Professor Dr Keri Carstens is Senior Manager Integrated Product Research Stewardship for DuPont Pioneer s Seed Treatment Enterprise where she coordinates stewardship assessments and integrated product development testing of new seed treatment active ingredients She serves as DuPont s science resource for pollinator health and has participated in numerous workshops on the topic Prior to her current role Keri spent nearly five years as Environmental Safety Assessment Lead for DuPont Pioneer providing global scientific leadership in environmental risk assessment of DuPont Pioneer products including research on environmental fate non target impacts and gene flow Keri has published numerous articles on environmental risk assessment in peer reviewed journals including Environmental Science Technology Transgenic Research and Environmental Toxicology Chemistry She currently holds graduate faculty status at Iowa State University where she serves on student committees and lectures in Toxicology Methods and Pesticides in the Environment courses She received her B A in Biology and Education from Wartburg College and her M S and Ph D in Toxicology and Entomology from Iowa State University As a U S EPA STAR Fellow she conducted research on the fate and impact

    of resistance to Bt corn by western corn rootworm a tough management challenge Patrick J Weber Dr Aaron J Gassmann Faculty Associate Professor Aaron Gassmann is an associate professor in the Department of Entomology at Iowa State University with research and teaching responsibilities in integrated pest management insect resistance management and plant insect interactions His research focuses on interactions between insect pests and corn Dr Gassmann joined the faculty at Iowa State University in 2008 Prior to that he completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Entomology at the University of Arizona and the Department of Entomology at the University of California Riverside He has a Ph D in Ecology and Evolution from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a B A in Biology from the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul Minnesota Dr Gassmann has written 43 peer reviewed publications presented 35 invited seminars and symposia coauthored 86 presentations at professional meetings and contributed to more than 150 outreach publications and presentations Area of Expertise Insect Resistance Management Integrated Pest Management Interdepartmental Programs Sustainable Agriculture Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Education Ph D Ecology and Evolution State University of New York at Stony Brook 2003

    Paolino Dr Aaron J Gassmann William B Showers Matthew E ONeal Dr Richard L Hellmich Faculty USDA ARS Research Entomologist Collaborator Assistant Professor Dr Hellmich has been a Research Entomologist with the USDA ARS Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research Unit in Ames Iowa for twenty years The mission of this lab is to develop sustainable ways to manage insect pests of corn His research focuses on European corn borer ecology and genetics insect resistance management and evaluation of non target effects of genetically engineered maize Previously Dr Hellmich studied Africanized honey bees in Venezuela and Guatemala while working for eight years at the USDA ARS Honey Bee Laboratory in Baton Rouge LA Dr Hellmich also is a Collaborator and Assistant Professor with the Iowa State University Department of Entomology Dr Hellmich was co recipient of a 2002 USDA Secretary s Honor Award for leading a consortium of scientists that investigated Bt maize and monarch butterflies He authored or co authored five papers published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA related to this topic He has authored over 120 peer reviewed publications and several book chapters Dr Hellmich was the Agricultural Research Service Midwest Area 2002
