    Graduate Admission 312 567 3020 The Sermon and the Institute In 1890 when advanced education was often reserved for society s elite Chicago minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulus delivered what came to be known as the Million Dollar Sermon From the pulpit of his South Side church near the site Illinois Institute of Technology IIT now occupies Gunsaulus said that with a million dollars he could build a school where students of all backgrounds could prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society Philip Danforth Armour Sr Frank Wakely Gunsaulus Allen C Lewis Inspired by Gunsaulus vision Philip Danforth Armour Sr 1832 1901 gave 1 million to found Armour Institute He initiated a family legacy of contribution to the university starting with his wife Malvina Belle Ogden Armour 1842 1927 and their son J Jonathan Ogden Armour 1863 1927 When Armour Institute opened in 1893 the institute offered professional courses in engineering chemistry architecture and library science IIT was created in 1940 by the merger of Armour Institute with Lewis Institute Lewis Institute was established in 1895 by the estate of hardware merchant and investor Allen C Lewis who envisioned a school where men and women could secure an education

    Arets an internationally acclaimed architect educator industrial designer theorist and urbanist as dean of IIT College of Architecture Arets will join IIT in fall 2012 Summer on campus was also exciting as Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited the university to share in the announcement that IIT plans to build a state of the art Innovation Center The new building will offer students and faculty a centralized facility to promote the basic elements of innovation and transition novel ideas into products and processes We also received the good news that Darsh Wasan IIT vice president for international affairs and Motorola Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering was named a fellow of the American Chemical Society As one of the Midwest s top Ph D granting universities with several nationally ranked programs IIT is committed to the advancement of the human condition through quality teaching and research Through our schools of engineering the sciences and humanities design architecture law business and psychology we are educating students to excel in a complex global society Our faculty research initiatives are addressing some of the most compelling topics of our time from hybrid vehicles to biomedicine to cancer research The university is committed to developing and fostering a climate of inclusiveness with a diverse faculty staff and student body I have appointed a committee representative of every part of the university to consider ways to improve diversity and the climate of inclusiveness on the campus That committee is reviewing our diversity statement It is also working to develop implementation plans for the goals for diversity set forth in our strategic plan More information will be coming from the committee as it progresses in its work I encourage you to explore this website to learn more about the people students faculty and staff that make IIT distinctly unique

    that support the academic policies and activities of the university s educational mission Along with IIT President John Anderson Cramb has been leading IIT s effort to develop and implement a new strategic plan for the university which was approved by the Board of Trustees in May 2009 Titled Many Voices One Vision the plan has outlined the university s academic and research priorities and will serve as a strong resource base for IIT s programs and strategic initiatives through 2014 Provost s Bio Alan Cramb was formerly dean of the School of Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute RPI he joined RPI in 2005 Prior to RPI he was the head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University CMU where he also was a professor and co director of the Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research He received his Ph D from the University of Pennsylvania During his time as dean at RPI Cramb oversaw an increase in both undergraduate and graduate enrollments a significant increase in research expenditures the initiation of a mandatory international program for undergraduate engineering majors and the introduction of the Lemelson RPI prize for student innovation Cramb is the author of more than 190 publications and two patents and was the recipient of the AISI Medal in 1985 and 1986 and the Robert Woolston Hunt Award of the Iron and Steel Society in 1987 He was named an Iron and Steel Society Professor in 1992 and was awarded the Benjamin Richard Teare Award at CMU for excellence in engineering education in 1995 Cramb was the recipient of the Posco Chair for Iron and Steelmaking at CMU in 1997 and was the president of the Iron and Steel Society in 2000 He was made a fellow of the Iron and Steel
