  • Bridge Building Guidelines for New Regions
    to promote fairness and yet encourage new geographic areas to participate High schools colleges and professional organizations are encouraged to form Regions for High School Bridge Contests in accordance with the following guidelines Only one regional contest leading to the International Contest should be held within each 150 mile radius Note that this guideline may be modified by those which follow A Region must have a minimum of 5 participating high schools participating i e send at least one entry Schools may participate in only one Region If more than 50 high schools have participated in one regional contest then before the next contest is held that Region may be split into smaller non overlapping contiguous geographic Regions as long as each new Region has at least 20 participating high schools The two winning students from each Region will be eligible for the International Contest STARTUP To encourage a high school to participate for the first time the high school may establish its own Region and hold its own regional contest subject to the following conditions The high school has not participated in a regional contest It is more than 150 miles from an established regional contest The second year

  • Running School Bridge Contests
    plate will do Drill the plate at its center to accept a 3 8 inch eyebolt Move the horizontal plate vertically down onto the loading location on the bridge Then from below the bridge insert the eyebolt up through the plate and secure with a nut from above Use a hook to hang the load from the eyebolt Slotted lab masses can be loaded on a rod hooked onto the 3 8 inch eyebolt to test the bridges If your school does not have enough lab masses to break the bridges a platform consisting of a 2 foot square of 3 4 inch plywood can be suspended from the 3 8 inch eyebolt below the bridge with ropes or chains Bricks or other available masses can then be piled on the platform to break the bridge Or use a sturdy 5 gallon bucket instead of a platform etc Since bridges may support more than 25 kg it is suggested that you limit the distance the mass is allowed to fall when the bridge breaks A distance of between 1 and 2 inches is recommended This will assure good relations with classes on the floor below you It is also a
