    but must still be identifiable as the original official basswood No other materials may be used The bridge may not be stained painted or coated in any fashion with any foreign substance 2 Construction The bridge mass shall be no greater than 25 00 grams The bridge see Figure 1 must span a gap S of 300 mm be no longer L than 400 mm be no taller H than 180 mm above the support surfaces and have a maximum width W of 70 mm It must have a horizontal loading plane that is a height P above the support surfaces where 60 mm P 80 mm The bridge structure may not project below the support surfaces The bridge must be constructed to provide a horizontal support surface for the loading plate and rod at each of the three possible loading positions These three positions at the mid span of the bridge and 60 mm to either side of the center will be clearly and consecutively labeled 1 2 3 from either end of the bridge by the participant before submission to the judges see 3b The structure of the horizontal loading plane must be a minimum length R of 160 mm and centered on the mid span of the bridge The bridge structure must allow the loading rod see 3a to be mounted from below The bridge must have a minimum clearance C of 60 mm in height above the support surfaces This clearance also extends 80 mm toward either end of the bridge from the center point of the bridge No part of the bridge structure may be in this clearance area and a 60 mm high by 160 mm long block oriented with its 160 mm dimension parallel to the span of the bridge must pass cleanly under the bridge when the bridge is placed on a flat table top 3 Loading The load will be applied by means of a 40 mm square plate that is 6 35 mm 1 4 inch in thickness A 9 53 mm 3 8 inch diameter loading rod is attached from below to the center of the plate see Figure 2 The plate will be horizontal it will not pivot on the loading rod and the sides of the plate will be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bridge The three loading positions will be located on the horizontal loading plane The center loading position numbered 2 will be located at the center point of the bridge The other two loading positions numbered 1 and 3 will be located 60 mm toward either end of the bridge from the center On the day of the competition the judges will randomly draw the number of the loading position to be used it will be the same for all bridges tested 4 Testing On the day of the contest participants will center their bridge on the loading surfaces They will have previously located the loading plate and 3 8 inch eye

    support surface See specification 2b The loading plane has no thickness as it is a theoretical plane Question Does this horizontal loading plane have to be placed in the center of the bridge Answer The horizontal loading plane is 160 mm long and is centered on the mid span of the bridge See specification 2c Don t confuse the loading plane with the loading plate Question Is the horizontal loading plane supposed to be part of the bridge or is it part of the testing equipment Answer The horizontal loading plane defines the interface between the bridge and the loading plate It is the loading plate that is supported by the bridge Question In the Bridge Building Specifications it says that only 3 32 inch square cross section basswood can be used but later it says that the wood can be sanded in any manner so does that mean the wood can be smaller than 3 32 inch by 3 32 inch Can the wood be any other dimensions Answer You need to start with 3 32 inch basswood This is commonly available in hobby stores and is also available from IIT Other types of wood are not acceptable The 3 32 inch basswood may be cut or sanded as you desire when building your bridge I have seen pieces of 3 32 inch basswood cut in half or quarters lengthwise or sanded to smaller dimensions See Specification 1b Question I was looking at the bridges from earlier years and they don t seem to follow the same building requirements so have the Bridge Building Specifications changed from previous years or are the rules flexible for certain deviations Answer The specifications are changed each year Question First off are there any prerequisites or registration requirements prior to entering the competitions

    3 32 inch square cross section 30 linear feet Aim for about a 100 kg maximum load mass to break the best bridges Testing the bridge to destruction must be possible by use of hanging weights If this is not the primary method then a simple adaptation to hanging weights must be proposed The bridge rules must permit easy testing by local physics teachers The rules must be very simple for students to read and understand and limited to one sheet of paper 8 5 x 11 in both sides Financial The International Host must provide without charge Rules and Information to all Regional Hosts and or their qualifying contest winners Free Official Wood disseminated to all International Contest student participants Each stick of Official Wood must be identifiable as having been provided by the International Host A banquet following the contest Appropriate prizes trophies certificates photographs to student participants Scholarship to one or more universities when possible Postage phone calls mailings Location Must change each year to move through a sequence west central east central west etc Deadlines These must be submitted to the International Bridge Building Committee Chicago Submit application to be International Host by May 1 of
