    ve got less than 3 weeks left here in Australia It s been such a blur Link to Post Comment on this Post 0 Comments Weeks 3 and 4 Abstracts and Sightseeing August 17th 2015 Hello Readers Sorry I haven t updated this in a while I was preoccupied with scrambling to get my AGU abstract submitted week 3 and then we planned a sightseeing trip for last weekend so I figured I would just wait to post until after that since I would be stocked up on fun photos So here s what I ve been up to Week 3 As I mentioned earlier this week was devoted almost entirely to preparing and submitting my AGU abstract I needed a great deal of advising from Professor Tklacic and Marija since I was still getting a feel for my research We succesfully composed a fairly open ended abstract where we listed background information method and goals Unfortunately we couldn t really say much about results since we have yet to have any The over arching tone of the abstract was sort of here s what we re doing here s why we re doing it and we ll let you know what we find once we ve done it Once we finally got it submitted things seemed to go from 100 miles per hour or more appropriately kilometers per hour down to a manageable walking pace After submitting I resumed my process of calculating Signal to Noise ratios for waveform data from the largest event we re using in our study I also began fiddling with GMT to try and make a topographic map of the study area but actually finding topographic data in a grd format took more time than I expected Other than that this week was mostly devoted to getting work done on my project Week 4 Now this is where the fun starts This week I met with Marija and Professor Tkalcic to discuss what our plans were moving forward with the project and Professor Tkalcic proposed that I do a synthetic experiment to see how the results of our Hierarchical Bayesian Inversion changed as a function of maximum azimuthal gap Since the Bayesian Inversion is so computationally intensive we need to pick an appropriate 10 stations of the 30 available to actually use in the inversion just as a side note the inversion with 10 stations takes about 2 weeks to run By looking at how the solution varies as a function of azimuthal gap we should be able to determine if there is an optimal azimuthal coverage to use in our inversion To backtrack a little I d like to explain a simple example of what a moment tensor solution actually is to help the reader better understand why azimuthal coverage is important As you can see in the photo below when an earthquake occurs on a fault plane certain areas are compressed while other areas are dilated These first motions can be detected on seismometers and if you have enough seismometers surrounding your earthquake source you can begin to get a picture of which areas were compressional and which were dilatational If you plot these first motions on a circle according to geographic location you can draw great circle arcs to divide the circle into quadrants of compression and dilatation What is truly powerful about this is the fact that one of the two lines you have drawn actually represents the physical fault plane and its geometry Deciding which line is the actual fault is fairly easy if you have an idea of the geologic setting pre exisitng faults where the earthquake occured Now what does this all have to do with azimuthal coverage Well if you imagine a scenario where an earthquake occurs but all of the seismometers are in a thin 45 degree band to the south of the earthquake you most likely won t be able to produce a complete moment tensor solution since all of your first motions may very well be compressional or dilatational By having a complete or nearly complete 360 degree array of stations around your earthquake source you can accurately describe your fault plane geometery Forgive my digression so given the challenge of running this synthetic experiment I immediately got to work writing a code that would calculate the maximum azimuthal gap between chosen stations After a day or two of struggling with UNIX commands I finally wrote a code that I am very proud of The code takes a user defined input of 10 stations so I simply type which combination of 10 stations I would like to use as a trial retrieves their latitude and longitude from SAC files plots the array earthquake location on a GMT map calculates the azimuthal gap between each station and its nearest neighbor and outputs the calculated gaps along with the corresponding station names to an easy to read txt file Once I had this done I was quickly able to produce 20 different combinations of 10 stations to use in our synthetic experiment For the rest of the week I began running the Inversion with the chosen combinations and by fixing certain parameters of the inversion we ve been able to complete one inversion every 45 minutes or so This will carry on into the beginning of this week and then we ll go over the results of the synthetic experiment and decide where to go from there This past weekend was deserving of an entire blog post on its own but I ll just clump it all into one mega post while I m here On Saturday we celebrated India s Independence Day by having a curry cook off at Professor Tkalcic s house Ajay the other intern from India was the main chef for the evening and he prepared vegetables a chicken curry and a kidney bean curry The vegetables were quite mild the chicken curry was a little spicy and the kidney bean

    on this Post 3 Comments The Long Haul June 29th 2015 So down below is that wonderful map of New Mexico Yeah I know it s missing the top waveform I ll fix that later In my last blog post I sort of touched on this already but probably the most frustrating thing for me and I believe this hits home for many of the other interns is getting stuck on a piece of code or a part of analysis with no one around to help Well maybe no one but I don t feel comfortable going around the office asking other researchers to take the time out of their day to help me on something so trivial when my mentor is not present Even when my mentor is around I do not want to give off that appearance of a needy child that can t do anything on its own So over the past few days I have been trudging along slowly getting things done when in the back of my mind I sort of wished I had a grad student working on a similar project that I could ask questions when my professor isn t available Probably my most yay moment so far doesn t even really have to do with my main research at all I plotted a map of seismicity in North Texas in GMT on a grey background of Texas Since it was zoomed in so close the picture really looked like a bunch of circles on a flat grey pancake Scientifically the image did what it was supposed to do show the reader the lat long of epicenters in Texas but it just looked terrible No one told me to do it and it might have been a not so productive use of my time but after an hour of google magic I managed to pull in some super high resolution DEM imagery of my study area and use that as a basemap this was done all before the hw for the image below was posted unfortunately The picture looks really cool and after I put in some more stations on it I ll be happy to show it I just felt really proud making something that looked so interesting to myself at least it didn t even matter that it really did not advance my research goal all that much and it took far longer that I had anticipated Link to Post Comment on this Post 1 Comments Attitude and Amplitude June 21st 2015 The past week I have been working on looking at the magnitude 4 earthquake that happened earlier this year as well as other smaller quakes in recent times near Dallas I gathered the waveform data from the IRIS website and had to remove the instrument response and transform the digital counts that the seismometer records into actual physical units such as velocity and amplitude This proved more difficult than expected because each station that recorded the earthquake had different

    have written gives the PNSN earthquake id s of earthquakes sorted by increasing hypocental distance given limitations on magnitude location and time While it is still rather simple it was nice to get my feet wet for hypoDD the double difference algorithm we are using Thus far we have just checked to make sure hypoDD runs well on a test file and that we have earthquake clusters of satisfactory spatial density Which we found both to be the case as you can see There were 1772 earthquakes around Mt St Helens on the PNSN network in the last year hypoDD is up and running on a test file awaiting all the real data we can throw at it This upcoming week we should have our preliminary results hopefully and a fair amount of our AGU abstracts written and submitted For this we have Matlab scripts that need to be modified for our data to create the input file and some contemplation to do on the focus of iMUSH It has been rather challenging do all of this work that seemingly doesn t contribute to this coding work but simultaneously rewarding to see it paying off Soon to come is the GMT map Thanks for reading Link to Post Comment on this Post 0 Comments Indepedence in fieldwork and communicating research July 11th 2015 2 weeks ago Hannah Krueger Steve Malone Sam Geoff Abers Kayla Crosbie and I left UW for the field The iMUSH network needed to be serviced and its data collected Thus we embarked on an endevor that took us to spectacular views of the pacific northwest volcano system plethoras of cheap mexican food rural motels data acquisition system troubleshooting face a fear of snakes a new fear of logging trucks and lessons in patience given by our relatively decrepit GPS units Each morning we would wake up between 6 and 7 and head to breakfast where Geoff would give us our assigned stations for the day all the nessesary maps and a set of keys to access each locality We would split into different teams each day and promptly head out to attempt to get to each station often with success sometimes with humor and occasionally with a flat tire We would get back any time between 17 and 20 at night for dinner to begin planning for the next day discuss the technical issues we had dealt with that day and grumble about the local cuisine and heat 95 F 35 C This was the process everyday for about 11 days While our main focus was fieldwork during this period we still spoke about the academic methods and implications of our work Here I put some thought into how I may explain the work I am doing If I had to give an elevator talk it would start from the goal and come down to what I am doing Primarily we would like to locate the precise location of the magmatic structures under Mt St Helens

    shows low velocity The receiver function is showing how quickly the waves are traveling over time You can see a blue peak at 0 seconds where the P wave first arrive There another blue peak around 6 seconds which is the Moho a fast velocity zone If you rotate the picture seen below it looks like layers where 0 is the surface of the earth From the surface there are some rock causing red low velocity and then further down from the surface there is the moho causing a blue faster velocity zone What I am looking for is a low red velocity zone on the transverse component right hand graph after we see the Moho This low velocity zone could be the MLD Also these images are unmigrated this can cause slight shifts and make the images appear not to have the same velocity zones appear at the same time We are currently fixing our velocity code to create better models coming soon Link to Post Comment on this Post 3 Comments Working in the Field July 3rd 2015 I ve just returned from fieldwork where I was able to travel half way across the country to deploy and service seismometers It was hard work digging so many holes and carrying equipment but very well worth it The MAGIC Array now has 27 28 seismometers deployed and with more seismometers mean more data During fieldwork we had to make a lot of stops at different hardware stores A lot of people were curious why we were buying so much cement sand fence posts and other miscalenous items and started to ask questions This helped me learn how to communicate our project to the general public Most people new the basics of what an earthquake was but not a lot of the key concepts of seismology The questions I got were what is a seismometer does a seismometer create earthquakes why would we need a seismometer in Ohio I would tell people that a seismometer is a machine that can measure earthquakes and vibrations it does not cause earthquake but records them when the do occur Although Ohio does not get very many earthquakes our sensors are so sensitive that they were able to record the Nepal Earthquake last April The community seemed excited about our project and that it was going to be in their hometown I felt that telling more people about our project was almost like outreach in which it helped informed more people about seismology and get them excited about science I really enjoyed being out in the field and learned so many new skills Below I wrote Lauren s Guide to Seismometer Deployment a complete list of different things I needed to do while in the field Seismometer Deployment Step 1 Dig a Hole 3ft deep this has to be deep enough to fit a barrel Estimated time 3 4 hours Step 2 Mix and Pour 2 bags of concrete into the hole Step 3 Place a barrel in the hole add one bag of concrete into barrel Step 4 Allow concrete to dry Draw an East west line to orientate the sensor Step 5 Place seismometer in barrel orientate and level Step 6 Dig a shallow hole to house action packer holds all the electronics Step 7 Create trenches that lead from the seismometer to the action packer and a trench leading to where the solar panel will be Step 8 Create the PVC pipes needed to connect and protect the wires Step 9 Build the solar panel Step 10 Place the DAS Breakout box Batteries Power Box and GPS into Action Packer follow directions on Station Installation Sheet Step 11 Connect wires Step 12 Close up barrel to protect seismometer Step 13 Bury the seismometer action packer and pipes as needed Step 14 Protect the station by installing a fence if needed Link to Post Comment on this Post 2 Comments Off to do some Field Work June 22nd 2015 Here s some clarification on my last post and more about my Project Anisotropy is when the minerals are aligned in one direction Normally minerals are aligned in random directions this is isotropic However when pressure is applied causing deformation it can cause the minerals to align all in the same direction Now this causes changes in velocity If the minerals are randomly aligned the speed at which earthquakes will travel through the material will be pretty uniform in any angle the wave hits However once aligned the speed will vary greatly If the wave is traveling perpendicular the wave will travel slower If the wave travel parallel to alignment of the minerals it will travel faster Now I m off to field do field work I will be helping construct and install 5 seismic stations in West Virginia and Ohio and repairing 7 stations along the way I m very excited to start my travels below is a map of my journey I ll check back in 10 days Link to Post Comment on this Post 3 Comments From Earthscope to field work June 18th 2015 The summer sure has been ramping up I ve just returned from the Earthscope conference this past week Vermont was beautiful and I learned so much Through the talks and posters I really got a good sense of all the things you can do with seismology It was a very tiring trip but a lot of fun to met other seismologist My project is Earthscope funded so by attending I was able to learn more about my project and also got to practice talking about what I am doing At the beginning of the conference I was pretty worried I did not know many people there and everyone was much more educated then I was I pretty much clung to my mentor the first dinner but slowly started to gain more independence and branch out This really helped develop my networking skills and gave me more

    the SKS splitting This collumn will discuss my methods and some of the results I am using two different methods so I will be sure to explain here their differences why I used them and how the results of both match up I think this collumn will also contain a map showing the general fast direction trend I determined from the splitting measurements The final collumn will contain the rest of my results my conclusions acknowledgements and references This is of course a rough rough outline and my mentor has shown me other posters done by himself and previous interns that I feel will be nice beginning templates as well Hopefully I can get an image of my outline up soon for you guys to get a better picture Well I think that s about all I have for now Tune in next time for more photos of everyone had a lovely day As for me science stops for no one Or no holiday either This past week has started up my field work again here in Alaska and what a wonderful week it has been We ve been from Fairbanks to Seward to Kenai and we ll soon be in Anchorage where we will be flying in a float plane So many new experiences I am having Today we installed a station in the rain and if any of you have ever used a Clie A palm computer used with the Q330 and Baler you know it s not supposed to get even a drop of water on it Our solution I know I know don t I look great The good thing about that tarp though was that it kept out so many mosquitos a major annoying problem here in Alaska In rain or sunshine this summer fieldwork has been some of the most fun I ve ever had On top of all the fun of installing these stations Alsaka is just absolutely beautiful We get to set up in such remote spots that it s hard to find a place that isn t gorgeous I may cut this blog short unfortunately We are still out in the field and the internet here at the house we re renting isn t always the fastest or most reliable Hope you guys have a wonderful 4th of July and a great week Til next time Nealey S Link to Post Comment on this Post 2 Comments The Ups and Downs June 23rd 2015 Hi all Okay first things first the Midnight Sun baseball game was a blast That photo was taken at midnight and it actually appears darker than it really was The Alaska Goldpanners won the game 7 4 and it ended around 1 30AM It was still pretty light outside even then and the sun started to come up around 2AM Crazy days here I recommend this as a bucket list addition for anyone Now on to the fun stuff So far this summer I ve had a few moments that drove me to frustratingly clicking and typing away at my computer hoping that it would give me something useful in return One of the most frustrating things is going through a station s data that has maybe 150 earthquakes and one by one the seismograms give you nothing Desperately searching for some usable wave and having nothing to show for it It can be a little disheartening You know what else was a little frustrating at one point GMT Man is that program finicky One little dash where there shouldn t be and bam ERROR ERROR ERROR But with a little insight from Doug about watching those O s and K s I finally made a map Boy talk about a sense of accomplishment Turns out I really enjoy working with GMT though What a neat and incredibly useful tool Tedious Yes A bit confusing at times Sure Did I mention tedious It s moments like this though that make me smile and reassure me that this is the field I want to work in Another great example of good moments Literally all of the field work I have done thus far and I m sure all of the work still to come Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than standing on top of a steep 80ft bluff after just having helped lug hundreds of pounds of equipment up and install a seismometer station in the midst of Devil s Club and a swamp Glorious feeling right there especially knowing that the climb down was going to be infinitely lighter and easier Or thinking that my data wasn t turning out so great because I was looking at individual stations but then when reviewing the big picture it all works out quite nicely there my not be a ton of results for a particular area but when the results that ARE there actually match up that s a pretty great feeling I m actually really proud of myself for coming in to this with the small amount of programming and coding experience I had and picking it up as quickly as I have I have acheived some personal goals and already done more than I even anticipated I would be able to do by now It s the little wins that can feel the most rewarding honestly Personally I think it s good for me to have a good ballanced amount of both very difficult and successful experiences In fact usually it s the challenging ones that turn out to be the most successful in the end Those infuriating frustrating ones are what make this all fun anyway they keep you on your toes and constantly learning and there s not even time to think about being bored All in

    a time for us to check out now and running it through my code to see how it looks So far no bueno Something is off but we haven t found where and neither has he In the meantime I ve been trying to keep busy as always Using the skills I learned from that last map I posted I ve been continuing bits and pieces to improve my GMT map Still not completed but this is what I have so far I ve also been exploring other ways of organizing my data at the suggestion of Rob but with how the data is currently being presented it s a little difficult due to inconsistencies Also late last week I had something pointed out to me I don t really fully understand what I m doing I mean that s not surprising I have geophysics and two general physics courses under my belt so I really shouldn t expect to be at the same level of understanding as a graduate student But I was so focused on trying to learn the code and the how to do the inversions that I didn t stop to think why Like I know what the dispersion curve is supposed to look like and the velocity model but if you asked what kind of information I could glean from it I wouldn t be able to tell you on the fly without some serious thought first Just a slight jab at my pride So I ve been assigned some literature and I ve been working on getting a better understanding The intro to seismology book that I m using isn t very simple though and I will admit that I ve fallen asleep reading it Luckily I have the internet so I m going to try to continue to explore my options in expanding my knowledge As always I have to update you on my Western exploration This weekend I stayed more local I think I mentioned I had planned on going to the Caverns and White Sands as well as rock hounding Well the girls who were going to go with us were unable and when I went to the rental place they were out of cars But they did have small SUVs so I ended up with a Jeep Cherokee for the weekend for the price of a car which meant we were going camping We did end up visiting White Sands but then headed up to Cloudcroft and camped in Lincoln National Forest which is definitely above 8 000 feet Wait am I in New Mexico On the way down there we drove the whole Quebradas scenic byway and on the way home we stopped at San Lorenzo canyon It was fun revisiting the sites and we saw several roadrunners and a family of quails On a less fun note my mom crashed my car back home this past weekend Fortunately she was fine but my car is totaled so I m going to have to be a lot more frugal about my adventures from here on out to ensure that I can afford to buy a new car in August One last big adventure though I have the money set aside for this weekend although I m letting Danielle plan it so I don t actually know what we re doing but we will definitely be camping in Colorado Maybe even seeing the Colorado Rapids take on the Vancouver White Caps with some fireworks on Saturday but we will see Later days Tori Link to Post Comment on this Post 0 Comments Wild Wild West June 25th 2015 Happy Thursday readers I have some good news WE GOT DATA Woo The bad news is the program that David is working with is being entirely uncooperative and he s doing QC and stacking before I can touch it so well here we are haha He s been really awesome in that he s given me snippets here and there so I ve got some code ready for whenever I do get the whole thing that will hopefully chug through the data relatively quickly That s actually what I m going to do today he just gave me a chunk of data from one of the shots there are many many shots so I m going to tweak my code a bit more I was going to do it yesterday but the GMT assignment took a bit more focus to figure out than I had anticipated Speaking of which here is that map Getting my code working one bit at a time has been my main focus but I ve also been trying to get my GMT maps to look even nicer including spending way too much time coming up with a custom color palette file because I don t like any of the pre built in ones I m sorry the desert should not have any blue in it even if it s just a topo map We also have some previous seismic surveys that were taken in random parts of the flat so I ve made a list of which ones intersect our site and I have to look at the data from those surveys and see if there s anything we should expect at those intersections Unfortunately the site where those files are kept appears to be down this week so that might be a Monday project Probably the most frustrating thing about this whole thing has been the data or rather lack thereof Trying to come up with code using other data sets which are often rather different or whose headers are incomplete to the point of uselessness has certainly made things interesting There is a bright silver lining though man am I learning to be patient And to not panic which Hunter keeps telling me I like having my stuff done ahead of time especially for something as big as this Things don t always go the way that I want though and learning to accept that this early on will help me when I do my own research I think The cool thing out of all of this is that I came into this without much knowledge of coding and now I ve written my own rudimentary code I can t really write functions but I m comfortable with loops and two or three weeks ago I didn t even know what the heck they were That and I LOVE GMT Even if it s pain in the you know what I love the functionality of it Armed with bash matlab and gmt I think I m a far cry from where I was 5 weeks ago when I left home There s a lot more to learn but I m really happy with my progress Okay now that you re updated on my research adventures it s time for my outdoors adventures The title of my post probably gives you a hint but this past weekend myself and Danielle my faithful adventure partner headed Northwest and landed ourselves in Utah First though here s some stuff from my previous weekend s foray into Petrified Forest National Park Trees scared stiff O Storms at the badlands Lots and lots of lightning but I only got videos no pictures And this weekend we went through Petrified Forest again and had intended to go to the Grand Canyon but it was like 105 so we decided to just go right to Lake Powell which was beautiful Doesn t do it justice Sunset and sunrise at Lake Powell Okay just one more the sunrise from the tent So we headed further into Utah where the gas prices are about 0 90 higher than in Albuquerque it s horrifying I m telling you but the landscape is insane Danielle climbing a crazy cross bedded rock at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Southern Utah The hoodoos at Bryce Canyon National Park The natural bridge among many others I m sure that aren t on the main road also at Bryce Our campsite at Kodachrome State Park where the sand was much more comfortable than at Lake Powell The Colorado River in Marble Canyon as seen from the Navajo Bridge I didn t end up going to the Grand Canyon because it reached 108 when we were heading back and we were already pretty exhausted but if Marble Canyon is anything to compare it to the Grand Canyon is probably going to be insane Alright I think that about does it for this week This weekend I m looking to meet up with a fellow Kutztowner who is at Los Alamos and to head down to Carlsbad Caverns White Sands and Rock Hound State Park if Greetings excellent readers This week well still no data but I ve been working with a lot of data that isn t my data so that I can actually do what I m supposed to do when the time arrives I hope you followed that It s kind of good because I m getting all of my frustration out on data that I don t actually need so that s kind of cool Hopefully we ll get data tomorrow or Monday Hm Until then I ve been getting extremely frustrated with data that was the precursor to our project The good news ultimately I m definitely getting better with MatLab I mean I know it s not much but at least I can get it to do what I want it to do and I ve gotten pretty good at solving my own problems And if I m really stuck David has been very helpful Still Haha Further exciting news there s a chance I ll get to stay a couple extra weeks The fieldwork for the second half of my project the East West hits is scheduled to start the week after I m leaving With any luck I might be able to get hired by the people doing the actual data collection they re a third party company not Sandia and get to run around in the desert doing whatever they tell me to do and probably dying a little This is REALLY cool But no promises yet although Hunter has been very awesome about keeping me updated on the status I m sure you re eagerly awaiting my latest adventures I actually didn t do anything too exciting this weekend as it was only a two day weekend I decided to spend most of my time buzzing around in Arizona I was going to camp out at Petrified Forest National Park but the entire time I was there it stormed pretty bad and there was a lot A LOT of lightning striking the desert floor Considering I was alone I decided not to do that so I stayed in Holbrook AZ Of course the storms went away but I went and saw Jurassic World If you haven t seen it you should because it s awesome I then took the scenic route down to Show Low and over to good old Socorro before heading back to Albuquerque I have pictures but I haven t uploaded any of them yet This weekend s looking like Grand Canyon briefly Lake Powell because it s going to be REALLY hot and Bryce Canyon I m sure we ll probably stop somewhere else too but that s Friday and Saturday as of right now You might be wondering about the title of this post Or you might not be I ve been known to make unrelated post titles but this one is actually relevant With the fourth of July rapidly approaching ugh which means summer s like half over independence becomes a much more commonly thrown around word Personally I can t say I ve developed into the independent person that I am today but that I ve always been this way This is great when you re 25 and trying to wade your way through the wonderful world of science but I m pretty sure it was extremely exasperating for my mom and for teachers throughout my life Or at the very least interesting Being an independent person has been really awesome in doing research at the undergraduate level I just assumed that I was supposed to do the work and figure it out myself until I would go to update my research advisor Dr Tindall and she would marvel at that very fact I m not even sure what I d be doing out here if I wasn t well independent I can t just sit around and wait for people to join me and actually I d much rather not because I d never get anywhere and I d be bored I mean you can t always wait for people to hold your hand like when it comes to research or grad school But in that same boat you also don t want to be so independent that you insist on creating your own path through the most difficult forest possible I m a pretty stubborn person so I completely understand that there s a balance Don t depend on people for everything but heeding words of wisdom from those before me has never hurt me And sometimes it s a little nerve wracking tackling big challenges alone like my 30 hour drive out here I do have to say though even if it s a little scary it feels really great to have completed something like that I mean you just did this whatever your challenge may be that you obviously triumphed over so you can definitely do the next thing this internship for example and so Waiting Game and How Much I Love Colorado June 10th 2015 Hey readers I mean the title pretty much speaks for itself right Colorado was awesome and here are some pictures Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs Big Horn Canyon Great Sand Dunes National Park Hayden Pass Sangre De Cristo Mountains by Coalmont The view from US 24 West heading towards Cañon City Needless to say it was pretty insane Also if a sign says a road is four wheel drive they are very serious Also please note that that s 5 pictures out of roughly 330 it s a gorgeous gorgeous place But let s get down to business to defeat the huns I m currently playing the waiting game for the data I m going to be working on This isn t entirely bad I ve been working with David Tang who is a graduate intern working on this project with me and hailing from UC Berkeley and now UT Austin and he s been helping me get more comfortable with MatLab no matter how difficult I can be He s been super great I have also been doing more work on understanding ReMi and trying to figure out how to express what I m doing in a non scholarly way since I can then use that as an outline and express it in a scholarly way ideally anyway So obviously I m working with MatLab and as I ve previously mentioned I ve also worked with GMT on my maps which hey I can show you This is the Nevada Test Site The next step is to throw in some more labels and a legend and do the same thing for the other two maps I have one of Nevada so you can see where the test site is and then a close up of that orange line our field site The orange line actually isn t a line it s all the shots of the piledriver but they re so close together 200 m spacing that it ends up looking like a line no matter what I do That dataset has had a few delays due to surprise technical difficulties But once we get it our team will be some of the first people to look at it So I ll be doing or running the code for depending on your view to do the initial event picking for the Rayleigh waves I ve also been talking to everybody I can about grad school and trying to narrow down what I want to do and who I want to do it with and where Everybody has been very willing to give advice and share personal stories good and bad so I m really thankful for that Okay I think that s enough for today Hope all the other interns are having a blast the blogs are looking awesome and   • IRIS Internship Program - Jordan Bishop
    new experience in itself as I had to find an oral surgeon in the area and arrange travel to and from the surgeon s office Furthermore this summer I ve figured out what I want to do for grad school as well as a few possible places that I want to apply I am really excited to work with computers now a first for me Through my project I have also gained more experience with Python Linux and more general computing knowledge As a result I want to apply for graduate programs in applied mathematics and computational science These programs all have numerical analysis numerical linear algebra techniques and numerical partial differential equation solving and optimization techniques Linear Programming Least Squares techniques and Convex Optimization at their core so I know I will have a blast My top choices right now are Stanford MIT and Cambridge I m still not 100 sure what I want to do as a career so I want to obtain a Master s Degree first Furthermore many of the programs I m looking at are tracks or concentrations in a larger field so I could usually retain my geoscience concentration A possible future goal of mine is possibly obtaining a PhD and working for the USGS This summer has also gotten me excited in hazard management and I think working in the natural hazards department at the USGS would be exciting A short faced bear statue and I A Dire Wolf Skeleton Yosemite Link to Post Comment on this Post 1 Comments Getting off the Ground June 11th 2015 This summer I will be working with an Ocean Bottom Seismometer OBS dataset collected between August 2010 and September 2011 These seismometers were deployed off the coast of Southern California over two areas from the California Borderlands a 100 250 km wide continental margin to the West off the Patton Escarpment and onto the seafloor My group is working on the picking part of the entire data set but I think other groups at Caltech may be using subsets of the data for various things e g ambient noise tomography To look at my data I m using PQL II It s simple to use but very slow sometimes I can t have the window maximized either when using it or it just freezes too odd I think one of the exciting things about my research though is that we re using two python programs written in house To follow along with these I ve been teaching myself how to program in Python A special thanks to Code Academy whoop whoop To develop on Python I ve learned how to use the IDE integrated development environment Eclipse which is really helpful for debugging Furthermore I ve learned some basics of object oriented programming which is something I ve heard a lot about my rooomate at UNC was Computer Science Major As a side note I have now started to keep a separate blog for my research
