    Cancer Institute NCI awards a planning grant to the IU School of Medicine for a cancer center establishing the Indiana University Cancer Center 1999 The IU Cancer Center earns National Cancer Institute designation 2004 NCI renews designation 2006 The IU Cancer Center becomes the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center to reflect the philanthropic support of Melvin and Bren Simon 2008 NCI renews designation 2014 NCI renews designation At the IU Simon Cancer Center more than 200 scientists conduct research from five different programs The goals of those programs range from understanding the molecular changes that cause cancer to the development of targeted therapies to prevent and treat cancer Each year our physician researchers lead more than 600 active clinical trials for pediatric and adult cancers Our researchers have made protocol defining discoveries that have changed the way doctors treat testicular cancer breast cancer gastrointestinal cancer genitourinary cancer leukemia multiple myeloma thymoma and thymic carcinomas and thoracic cancer The researchers at the IU Simon Cancer Center are primarily faculty of the IU School of Medicine They also include researchers from the IU School of Nursing Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame A National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center The IU Simon Cancer Center is Indiana s only National Cancer Institute NCI designated cancer center that provides patient care and is one of only 69 in the nation The NCI designated Cancer Centers Program recognizes centers around the country that meet rigorous criteria for world class state of the art programs in multidisciplinary cancer research These centers put significant resources into developing research programs faculty and facilities that will lead to better approaches to prevention diagnosis and treatment of cancer The NCI designation not only recognizes excellence but opens doors to greater federal funding information sharing and
