    of how IUHPFL fees compare to other study abroad programs may be helpful when a guardian considers a study abroad program for their son or daughter Country City Program Fee Airfare Austria Graz 4 350 1 562 1 724 Chile Viña del Mar 4 300 1 562 1 724 China Hangzhou 4 100 1 562 1 724 France Brest 4 650 1 562 1 724 Saumur 4 650 1 562 1 724 St Brieuc 4 650 1 562 1 724 Mexico Mérida 3 800 804 Spain Ciudad Real 4 650 1 562 1 724 León 4 650 1 562 1 724 Oviedo 4 650 1 562 1 724 Students traveling to China will also pay an additional 200 in visa fees Miscellaneous fees include the language test registration at the beginning of the program cycle a potential passport application fee travel to and from testing possible interviews and orientation as well as potential postage for certain acceptance forms While participation in the IUHPFL is a significant investment the program is priced much more competitively than most international and even U S foreign language summer programs This is possible because Indiana University is committed to making IUHPFL as affordable as possible for students and for that reason manages its resources efficiently while offering aid to those who need financial assistance to take advantage of this unique opportunity It is IUHPFL s goal to continue to improve the quality of the IUHPFL year after year and give as much funding to its students as possible Based on its self funded model and effort to provide students as much financial support as possible the IUHPFL is able to offer the highest quality program at a lower rate than other study abroad programs Payment Process Program Fees are due in three installations the first installation is made upon acceptance into the IUHPFL typically in February or March of the travel year At this point students incur two immediate expenses the initial program and airfare deposit to secure their slot as a participant The complete payment schedule can be reviewed below and in the Program Schedule A non refundable initial payment of 750 This initial payment contributes towards the upfront costs of deposits made for accommodations onsite A 750 airfare deposit towards round trip flights For the students safety and security and also for the logistical ease of the program we require that all students traveling to the same site must fly together on the same group flights to and from the host country The second installation is due in April and equals one half of the remaining program fee minus the 750 initial payment plus the remaining airfare balance The third installation is due around mid May and covers the remaining balance of program fees IUHPFL Payment Schedule 2016 Which Student Type of Payment Amount Due Date Students Accepted without Interview 1 Airfare Deposit 750 02 26 2016 2 Program Fee Downpayment 750 02 26 2016 Students Accepted with Interview 1 Airfare Deposit 750

    2016 León Spain 6 8 2016 7 20 2016 Mérida Mexico 6 9 2016 7 21 2016 Oviedo Spain 6 6 2016 7 18 2016 Saumur France 6 8 2016 7 20 2016 St Brieuc France 6 6 2016 7 19 2016 Viña del Mar Chile 6 10 2016 7 23 2016 2014 Students Engaging with the Mapuche Community in Viña del Mar Chile Program Sites The IUHPFL maintains ten program sites in Austria Chile China France Mexico and Spain Approximately 30 students are selected to travel to each site Site selection is based on matching the student s needs with the instructor teams and onsite host families to accomplish the most amiable combination While students stay with their host families for the entire trip they participate in multiple excursions including overnight trips In addition host families may offer additional sightseeing to regional attractions Each site has been carefully selected to provide a well rounded and safe experience for IUHPFL students Most program cities are of medium size and offer many historical cultural and entertainment venues Students may travel through their town by bus train or on foot Some host families provide occasional or regular transportation Each site offers retail stores markets and sports activities During the week students typically study until early afternoon and then participate in structured activities including sports such as soccer and dance as well as theatre and choir Hangzhou China was added to the program sites in the summer of 2014 While 9 students participated in the first year the program will eventually accommodate a similar number of students as the other program sites Some aspects of the program will vary for the China program only including a modified language commitment and length of stay Also in 2014 students traveled to Viña del Mar Chile

    are encouraged to take the IUHPFL Self Evaluation to see if the program is the right study abroad experience for them All materials for the student s personal application must be received by the November deadline Students may want to review specific program dates on the Program Schedule Note Only students who received an e mail invitation may apply to the program Whether or not a student is invited to apply depends on if s he passed the language test The IUHPFL selection committee uses a detailed rubric to evaluate each candidate for the program The rubric includes subsections dedicated to assess language test scores official school transcripts the personal application as well as confidential appraisals from teachers and non related adults Spanish students may list a preference to study in Chile Mexico or in Spain on their application Requests will be taken into consideration but cannot be guaranteed The IUHPFL office encourages prospective participants and their guardians to be open to placements in any one of our five Spanish speaking sites 3 Financial Aid Application Optional Materials for a student s financial aid application are typically due by the middle of February Financial aid at the IUHPFL is a reduction in program fees and not a loan to be repaid Even though the Program uses the FAFSA as a tool to determine the expected family contribution EFC the need for financial aid is based solely on the pool of program applicants independent of Indiana University at large 4 Possible Interviews Acceptance Students will be notified of their status as IUHPFL candidates in January Students will fall into one of four categories Acceptance Students are accepted into the IUHPFL outright based on the strength of their dossier Interview Students will be interviewed to further evaluate their status as a candidate for the IUHPFL Interviews take place from January to early March After being interviewed students may be accepted offered a spot as an alternate or declined Final selection of candidates for the IUHPFL will take place after the last round of interviews Alternate Students will be placed on a waiting list as an alternate for the IUHPFL Not accepted Students are declined to participate in the IUHPFL 5 Accepted Students Once students are accepted into the IUHPFL they are encouraged to begin the process of submitting acceptance materials which include various documents pertaining to their health host family preferences contact information etc Accepted students receive a login password to access all acceptance materials Students and guardians should also refer to the deadlines and payment schedule in the Program Checklist for Students which will be available in January Accepted students are highly encouraged to review the fundraising and sponsorship information as early as possible to obtain ideas on how to offset expenses Should students be selected to participate in the IUHPFL the selection committee makes placement decisions based on a number of factors the most important being how well they believe students will mesh with the instructors on their program site
