    Library In the News About the Program IUHPFL About the Program Program Sites Austria The Three Pillars The IUHPFL Experience Honor Code Qualifications for Participation Program Fees Funding Program Sites Austria Chile China France Mexico Spain 2016 Austria Program Dates Program Departure Program Return 6 10 2016 7 18 2016 Orientation for Graz Austria will take place in Bloomington Indiana Orientation 04 17 2016 Summer 2015 The first summer in Graz Austria Graz students were privileged to go out onto the honor balcony which is usually reserved only for important celebrities and politicians Program Sites Austria When the IUHPFL began in 1962 the city of Trier Germany offered a home to the first IUHPFL students Within two years Krefeld became the chosen site for German students and in 2014 Krefeld and the IUHPFL celebrated its 50 year anniversary Beginning summer 2015 the German speaking program was held in Graz Austria where IU Overseas Study has had a strong presence for over 30 years Graz Graz offers a welcoming scenic environment for IUHPFL participants with a strong infrastructure of onsite coordinator support established classroom facilities and a large pool of host families Note Although IU Overseas Study has a program in

    an unforgettable summer in South America in 2014 The IUHPFL collaborates with the Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University IFSA Butler in Viña del Mar to offer students a culturally diverse experience that incorporated community engagement activities for the first time ever into the program s model In addition to engaging in the community three times over the course of the program students take classes participate in afternoon activities and live with host families per the IUHPFL model As with all other IUHPFL Spanish speaking sites the program in Viña del Mar employs a full time Language Commitment One of the aspects of the Chile program is a community engagement experience with the local Mapuche population The Mapuche are one of the largest indigenous groups in South America and live in Chile and Argentina While most of them live in Southern Chile or in the capital Santiago Viña del Mar has a sizeable Mapuche population Many Mapuche are bilingual with Spanish and their native language Mapudungun in Mapudungun mapu means land and che means people Their sociopolitical relations have long been shaped by their spirituality which believes in a strong connection between humans land and the natural world hence their name In more recent times this spirituality has fused with traditions of Catholicism and Evangelical Protestantism IUHPFL students will participate in a Mapuche New Year activity as well as assist in a community work project Students will also participate in volunteer activities with other community organizations in the area Viña del Mar Located in central Chile in the Valparaíso region Viña del Mar is the fourth largest city in Chile with a population of just under 300 000 inhabitants This modern city was founded in 1878 and combines an urban and natural landscape with skyscrapers that give way to

    to Normandy and Paris as well as other locations nearby their site St Brieuc was established in 1962 as the first program in France followed by Brest in 1994 while Saumur was added in 2010 Brest Brest first mentioned in 1240 is located in the region of Brittany in northwestern France A midsized town of around 140 000 citizens it is an important seaport and naval base and shares a rich history with the United States Though much of its architecture was destroyed during WWII the Tanguy Tower the Castle and the Pont de Recouvrance a massive drawbridge offer a glimpse into old world France Since Brest sits on the Atlantic coast near a magnificent landlocked bay and the river Penfeld it offers beautiful vistas of beaches rich hills and forests Students may sample Breton cuisine like the famous Breton crêpe and delicious seafood Famous sporting events such as the Tour de France often travel through Brest Saumur With a population of almost 30 000 citizens the historic town of Saumur is located between the Loire and Thouet rivers in western France One of the most important monuments of Saumur is the breathtaking Château de Saumur which stands high above the town Around town students will discover the Cadre Noir the École Nationale d Équitation National School of Horsemanship and the Armoured Branch and Cavalry Training School The Tank Museum the Musée des Blindés showcases more than 850 armored vehicles wheeled or tracked from France though some come from other countries such as Brazil Germany or the Soviet Union Underground students may visit 500 kilometers 312 miles of caves de champignons caves used to grow 70 percent of the country s most common cooking mushrooms St Brieuc I was a participant in the program in St Brieuc in 1963 and

    Sites Mexico Since the program s beginning in 1962 Mexico has always been integral to the IUHPFL The program in Mexico began in Oaxaca but moved to Monterrey after two years After a few years in Monterrey the program moved to San Luis Potosí where it remained for many years In 2011 the program in collaboration with the Institue for Study Abroad at Butler University IFSA Butler moved from San Luis Potosí to Mérida to ensure a safe study abroad The IUHPFL has been working in collaboration with IFSA Butler since then IFSA Butler was founded in 1988 and launched its first program in Mérida Mexico in 2004 Summer of 2015 in Mérida incorporated community engagement activities into the Mexico program s model for the first time ever working with a Mayan community on three Saturdays during the program Traditionally the Mayan empire was located in the eastern third of the Yucatan peninsula and peaked during the sixth century C E While the decline of the empire is unknown there are still six million Mayans in the area that are unified by their common culture this makes the Mayans the largest indigenous group north of Peru The pyramids common to the peninsula designed orantely and without the use of metal tools used to be the sites of politics and rituals Today groups have multiple dialects of their native language although most are also bilingual with Spanish The Mayans have maintained numerous traditions most still engage in corn or coffee farming and sell traditionally woven textiles Mérida Mérida is located in the Yucatán peninsula a region of Mexico that remains isolated and safe from drug cartel violence In January of 2011 the United Nations awarded Mérida a banner of peace as the city was named one of the 100 cities of
