    the world and of their own existence and to structure their societies and assign meaning to the past Crucially context place time and frames of reference culture individual sense making condition the manifestations of religion and its impact on individuals and society We study religion as human activity We are fascinated by its diversity Above and beyond mapping and representing this diversity we want to explain it To this end we bring together scholars with expertise in individual religions with those who study religion from disciplinary and comparative angles in the social sciences and the humanities The expressions and the significance of religion in modern societies have changed dramatically in our local environment and elsewhere This is part of the permanent transformation of religion s In illustrating interpreting and explaining these dynamics we adopt a comparative multidisciplinary perspective This is made possible by the breadth of relevant expertise at Leiden University in terms of historical periods and culturally linguistically geographically defined places in the world LUCSoR and LIAS The Leiden University Centre for the Study of Religion LUCSoR and the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies LIAS structurally work together and have the same management team Their collaboration is embodied

    in the sharia courts of Gaza Palestine and Damascus Syria this paper compares the operations mode of communication and administration of the two courts The paper argues that with the emergence of nation states Islamic family law has been codified in almost everywhere in the Muslim majority countries However the way it is implemented and administered is squarely dependent on the socio economic development in each context specifically the extent to which modernisation urbanisation and institutionalisation are intensified Nahda Shehada Nahda Shehada is a senior lecturer of Gender Culture and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies Erasmus University in The Netherlands where she teaches advanced sociology qualitative methodologies comparative epistemologies feminist theories and gender development Shehada is interested in the anthropology of Islamic Law both in the Middle East and Europe She has finished coordinating a research project entitled Islamic Family Law in Palestine Text and Context in cooperation with Zurich and Bern Universities Switzerland Currently she is working on the following project Statelessness Among Syrian Refugees A Policy oriented Analysis of Exile and Measures for Legal Security in cooperation with Fribourg university Milan and Pavia university as well as JCLA and CAREP in Jordan and Libya respectively

    in our sources Two guests are invited who will start by addressing the topic in 20 minute papers Robert Carter Senior Lecturer at UCL Qatar and a specialist of Middle Eastern and Arab World archaeology from the Palaeolithic era to the coming of Islam will speak about his work on the archaeology of Christianity in the Gulf Jeremy Johns Professor of the Art Archaeology of the Islamic Mediterranean at Oxford University and Director of the Khalili Research Centre will speak on Muslim artists and Christian patrons in the Fatimid Mediterranean Palermo and Fustat Three Leiden colleagues will respond in 10 minute reactions from their own expertise Jürgen Zangenberg will feed in observations from the synagogue excavations he is co directing on Horvat Kur Galilee www kinneret excavations Gabrielle van den Berg will discuss the topic based on her work with Persian literary texts Corey Williams will bring his anthropological and religious studies background into the discussion We invite all of you to add to the comparison with examples from your own work and expertise How are religious identities expressed in your period and sources Do religious communities form discrete entities How can processes of religious interaction fusion or emancipation be

    zijn van alle tijden zowel in de islamitische als de christelijke traditie Maar waarom roepen zij zo veel emoties op Wie was de profeet Mohammed Voor moslims vormt het voorbeeld van de profeet sunnat an nabi één van de belangrijkste bronnen voor de geloofspraktijk In het christendom was Mohammed lang een valse profeet of de in de bijbel voorspelde parakleet Het heeft geleid tot zowel hevige polemieken als dialoog tussen christenen en moslims Tijdens deze cursus keken we naar beeldvorming in de politieke en sociale context van de geschiedenis Bekende en minder bekende islamitische christelijke en seculiere bronnen passeren de revue We zullen zien dat hedendaagse controversiële beelden zoals de Deense cartoons of Charlie Hebdo s satirische prenten diepe wortels hebben In de eerste bijeenkomst gingen we in op islamitische beelden van Mohammed in de tweede bijeenkomst werden de christelijke beelden van Mohammed besproken en tijdens de laatste bijeenkomst gingen we in op de hedendaagse beelden van Mohammed in zowel de Westerse als de moslimwereld Reacties van de Deelnemers Tijdens de cursus ging de docent overzichtelijk en gestructureerd in op visies vanuit meerdere kanten op kritische wijze Dit was een fijne benadering Het werkte zeer verhelderend om de geschiedenis van
