    love the people I get to meet every day They have rich backgrounds Marshall is what binds everyone it s a great daily reminder of the diversity at the university explains Kristen Footo Event and Building Operations Manager of the Foundation Hall Kristen has managed the tri states premier wedding venue for the past two and a half years but her heart belonged to Marshall far before then This Marshall alumna chose to attend the university due to its proximity to her hometown of Barboursville West Virginia because she received scholarships and because of the top notch journalism program Kristen knew events were her calling and graduated with a degree in Public Relations Summer is her favorite time of the year because it s wedding season and always busy It is always nice to see people celebrating such a special occasion with their loved ones she explains Kristen s favorite campus spot is the Memorial Student Center plaza by the Memorial Fountain because it is always full of bustling people and because the Memorial Fountain is so prominent in Marshall s history She likes Italian food and traveling Kristen received her SCUBA certification through a course at Marshall and is

    real estate personal property Through your will or with a distribution from a retirement plan or life insurance policy your gift can be designated to MU Foundation in accordance with your wishes Top What sort of gift plans also return income to me You have the option of making a gift that returns income to you your spouse or other individuals such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder unitrust or annuity trust Top What tax deduction will I receive for my gift Your tax benefits will depend on several factors the type of gift the time at which it is made whether it is outright or deferred or has any income payments In general though here are some guidelines Outright gifts to the MU Foundation generate a full income tax charitable deduction Outright gifts of appreciated securities are deductible at fair market value with no recognition of capital gains a great tax benefit Gifts of personal property like art books and collectibles are fully deductible so long as they are relevant to our mission We can advise you on this point Click here for contact information Bequests do not generate a lifetime income tax deduction They are exempt from estate tax Similarly life insurance distributions to the MU Foundation are not income tax deductible but are exempt from estate tax If you have made us the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of a policy during your lifetime you may deduct annual gifts that offset premium payments for more details on this point see Question 4 below The charitable deduction for a gift that returns income to you such as a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust is the fair market value of the gift asset minus the present value of the income interest you retain Top I want to set up a life insurance policy name The Marshall University Foundation Inc as beneficiary but retain ownership of the policy Can I deduct the premium payments I make No The IRS would not consider that a completed gift they d say that as the owner of the policy you could change the beneficiary designation to a friend or family member We must be made the irrevocable owner of the policy for gifts offsetting premium payments to be deductible Top I ve heard that transferring gifts of retirement plan assets to charity is advantageous Why Qualified retirement plans such as IRAs 401 k 403 b and Keoghs allow individuals to defer paying taxes on a portion of their income until the assets are withdrawn during retirement years However after a person s death these accounts are often exposed to income and estate taxes at a combined rate that could rise to 75 or even higher on large taxable estates The tax will be paid at some point by your estate and your heirs unless contributed to charity In other words by giving retirement assets to charity you receive double benefits Your estate and heirs will not be taxed on

    extended up periods in the market and the goal is to ensure that the endowmnet maintains its purchasing power over time to support future generations Top WHEN is the SPENDING ALLOCATION for ENDOWMENTS calculated The Foundation s SPENDING POLICY calculates the SPENDING ALLOCATION annually based on September 30th market values The amount of SPENDING ALLOCATION from designated funds will be communicated to Marshall University around the 1st of November The Spending Allocation is avaliable to Marshall University departments to plan for program expenses and scholarship awards for the following fiscal year aiding in recruitment and retention of students and programs Top WHAT is APPRECIATION DEPRECIATION APPRECIATION DEPRECIATION is the difference between the Market Value and the Corpus of the endowment APPRECIATION represents an excess of investment return both realized and unrealized over the withdrawls for spending and for management fees DEPRECIATION represents a deficit where cumulative investement losses both realized and unrealized have reduced the market value below the corpus of the endowment APPRECIATION is the customary funding source for endowment spending budgets There is NO SPENDING ALLOCATION if there is NO APPRECIATION Top WHY may my SPENDING ALLOCATION equal less than 4 Spending is limited by the APPRECIATION in the fund A few reasons why the SPENDING ALLOCATION may be less than 4 of the market value are as follows 1 If the APPRECIATION is less than the SPENDING BY CALCULATION the SPENDING ALLOCATION will be limited to the amount of APPRECIATION in the fund 2 If the funds have NOT been invested for the full 12 quarter period the SPENDING ALLOCATION calculated will be less than the 4 target 3 If a portion of the SPENDING ALLOCATION is returned to corpus based on the guidelines the net SPENDING ALLOCATION will be less than 4 Top WHEN will new

    Vice President and Regional Corporate Banking Manager for BB T presented the latest check of 100 000 to Dr Ron Area CEO of the MU Foundation Inc Dr Haiyang Chen dean of the College of Business and Dr Deanna Mader recently appointed director of the BB T Center for the Advancement of American Capitalism during a brief ceremony in the MU Foundation Hall Home of the Erickson Alumni Center This gift brings to 800 000 the total amount given by BB T since an entrepreneurial program called the BB T Center for the Advancement of American Capitalism was established in 2008 The BB T Center sponsors a lecture series and an upper division course in capitalism for business students among other activities We are very appreciative of the continued support from the BB T Foundation and their investment in this center Area said We are very proud to have the BB T Center on our campus and we look forward to its continued success Chen said We appreciate the BB T Charitable Foundation s support for the BB T Center for the Advancement of American Capitalism in the College of Business The funding has significantly enhanced our ability to improve students knowledge and understanding of the importance of American capitalism and entrepreneurship We are very proud to partner with the BB T Charitable Foundation and are looking forward to continuing this partnership and working together to build future success for our students and the public Moving forward Chen said the BB T Center will continue to play an essential role at Marshall University One of the top priorities for Marshall University and the college is to strategically invest in high demand degree programs Chen said We have an ambitious plan to develop a full degree program of innovation and entrepreneurship

    best education possible He championed the right of every child Myrtle Prichard said of her late husband That is why she donated 101 000 to establish through the Marshall University Foundation Inc an endowed scholarship in Larry Prichard s honor Included in the total was a 1 000 expendable gift so the scholarship could be awarded beginning with the 2015 2016 academic year while the rest of the gift is initially invested An incoming freshman will be announced as the recipient at the upcoming East Carter High School Awards Assembly later this month I hope what he believed so strongly in and always strove for will never be forgotten the right of all children to receive the best education possible Myrtle Prichard said This was his legacy If you wish to honor him be good to a child Larry Prichard was a native of West Virginia and a graduate of Marshall University where he earned a master s plus 45 in education administration in 1975 after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1972 He was superintendent of schools in Carter County Kentucky from 1997 to 2006 and was primarily responsible for Carter County receiving a public library the last county in Kentucky to do so To him this was unacceptable Myrtle Prichard said He believed the best way to change your life was to change someone else s His favorite quote was by Jesse Stuart I am firm in my belief that a teacher lives on and on through his students Good teaching is forever and the teacher is immortal Announcement of establishment of the fund known as the Larry Prichard Memorial Scholarship took place in a ceremony today in the Marshall University Foundation Hall home of the Erickson Alumni Center on the Huntington campus Recipients will be incoming freshmen
