    and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors Thus we ask that you abide by the following when placing items on reserve whether electronic or print You may place a reasonable number of copies on reserve While the guidelines aren t clear on just what constitutes a reasonable number another way of expressing it would be that the instructor should use reasonable judgment in determining how many copies are needed to allow all students in his or her class sufficient opportunity to read the material A good guideline to use is one copy per ten students enrolled in the course Each item must include complete citation information Each copy must contain a clear notice of copyright The library will affix this notice If you are including a chapter from a book also include a copy of the title and copyright pages For classroom or reserve use of copyrighted materials that falls outside the scope of fair use you will need to be granted permission from the copyright holder Ask at the circulation desk for forms to be used to seek permission Copying can not be used to create or replace anthologies or collections of works More information on library reserves Public performance rights for films The library owns many videos and dvds Most are purchased for in classroom library or home use only All films in the library collection can be shown in a classroom as part of a course In addition some library films are purchased with limited educational public performance rights These selected films may be screened by a public group for educational purposes when no admission is charged Non commercial events at schools libraries churches civic and non profit organizations are usually considered educational public performances Currently the only library films with public performance rights are those produced by Berkeley Media California Newsreel Films for the Humanities Sciences New Day Films Media Education Foundation Schlossinger Media Ambrose Video and a few selected titles from PBS Copyright Information Sources Laws United States Copyright Office Information on copyright basics applications for applying for copyright and publications of the copyright office are available Copyright Law of the United States Text of the actual Copyright Law of the United States as contained in Title 17 of the U S Code Title 17 Copyright Searchable text of the copyright law via the Cornell University School of Law Digital Millennium Copyright Act from the UCLA Online Institute for Cyberspace Law and Policy Introductory discussion plus links to text of the act and other information on its implications General Know Your Copy Rights Tips for using copyrighted works in your teaching with a discussion of what is permissable under fair use Fair Use Resources Copyright Advisory Office Columbia University Extensive discussion of fair use issues as they

    For many students the first step in the research process is an Internet search However just because a website appears on the first page of Google results doesn t mean it is a high quality source that should be used in papers or projects This session will introduce criteria that students can use for evaluating websites and other sources to determine their credibility Students will also be given an opportunity to practice applying the criteria to websites Then depending on the needs of the course the session can either focus on more advanced web searching tools and techniques or turn to a discussion of contemporary issues that are raised by online information such as privacy or intellectual property CWRR 2 IN151 Two instruction sessions are scheduled in each section of CWRR2 The topics planned for the instruction sessions include Session 1 Advanced keyword topic development Understanding appropriate source choice for the assignment Evaluating types of articles Course specific resources or information literacy concepts desired by the professor such as finding videos statistics interviews or focusing more deeply on authority of author and understanding the big picture of research Session 2 Depending on the ability to cover the session 1 topics during that first session any session 1 topics not yet covered may moved to session 2 Remainder of session to work directly with the students as they plan their research locate and evaluate resources on their topic If you have further questions contact Matthew Olsen Instructional Services Coordinator ext 6719 e mail molsen millikin edu Student learning in library research instruction As part of their responsibilities as members of the Staley Library professional staff and as Millikin University faculty members the Staley Library librarians provide research instruction sessions to academic classes This instruction is available for ALL classes although in terms of the number of sections taught our primary emphasis is on freshmen and the Critical Writing Reading and Research CWRR sequence and the University Seminar Student Learning in Library Research Instruction for CWRR Seminar 2013 14 Student Learning in Library Research Instruction for CWRR Seminar 2012 13 Student Learning in Library Research Instruction for CWRR Seminar 2011 12 Student Learning in Library Research Instruction for CWRR 2010 11 Student Learning in Library Research Instruction for CWRR 2009 10 Student Learning in Library Research Instruction for CWRR 2008 09 Research instruction for other subject areas beyond first year It is important to note that students gain only an introduction to research skills and experience in subject specific research in the first year core course sessions will be minimal It should also be remembered that the skills the students do learn are at a beginning level which may not be adequate as students progress to more sophisticated and topic specific course content At a faculty member s request librarians will be pleased to teach these advanced skills in individually tailored sessions This service is available to any class offered at Millikin University If you would like to request library instruction for

    alumni How do I place interlibrary loan requests I Share is the online catalog used to request most books and other returnable items needed through Interlibrary Loan These items can be requested directly by Millikin patrons making this the quickest easiest way to get books and other returnable items ILLiad is the interlibrary loan management system used by Millikin Any needed ILL item not found in I Share or articles not available at Millikin should be requested using ILLiad This system allows you to keep track of your requests and item due dates Articles requested are made available electronically through your ILLiad account You will need to register your ILLiad account the first time you use it Items can be requested while searching the periodical databases and WorldCat found through the library homepage To request items click on the Find It button and follow these steps Requests for items found from a citation may be added manually through ILLiad log in to ILLiad using the link above linked in my millikin edu or found on the library s homepage Then fill in a blank for the article book or other item under Create New Request How long will it take These speeds depend on the availability of the item and where the item is located It takes returnable items longer to arrive from California than from Chicago The average time it takes to receive an article is 2 days but it could be as fast as a few hours or as slow as 2 3 weeks Returnable items requested through the I Share catalog take an average of 4 days but could be as fast as 2 days or as slow as 2 weeks Returnable items requested through WorldCat take an average of 8 days but could be as fast as 3 days or as slow as 3 weeks How will I know when my request arrives You will be notified by e mail Returnable items must be picked up at the Staley Library Circulation desk Article requests will be sent to your ILLiad account electronically They are available for 30 days to print download etc What will it cost Usually nothing We always attempt to find libraries that lend at no cost and most of the time we are successful However any costs incurred by our library will be passed on to you You will be notified before any ILL with an associated cost is made for you What loan periods can I expect How many renewals can I have Loan periods and renewal policies for items borrowed through the I Share catalog are summarized on this website I Share renewals can be requested online though your I Share catalog account Items borrowed through WorldCat ILLiad will vary in their loan periods and renewal policies as determined by the owning library WorldCat ILLiad renewals should be requested through our interlibrary loan department please call 217 424 3560 and provide as much detail as possible including your name the title
