    Faculty Staff Directory At A Glance Mission Values Millikin History Employment Accreditation University Marketing Administration Office of the President Office of the Provost Student Development Board of Trustees Faculty Staff Directory Media Newsroom Calendar of Events Video Gallery Photo Gallery Press Kit Science Facilities Centers Facilities You are here Home Campus Life Centers Facilities Science Facilities Leighty Tabor Science Center Opened in 2002 the Leighty Tabor Science Center is named after John and Ula Leighty Millikin University chemistry and biology graduates respectively and Purvis F and Roberta Tabor Dr Leighty helped commercialize the production of antibiotics such as penicillin Mr Tabor was an enterprising businessman whose Tabor Grain Feed company merged with Archer Daniels Midland in 1975 Thanks to a very generous gift from John and Ula Leighty and Purvis F and Roberta Tabor the biology chemistry physics and nursing programs received a new home in 2002 The 83 000 square foot Leighty Tabor Science Center located on the north side of Millikin s 75 acre campus includes classrooms teaching laboratories an observatory well equipped research labs and a greenhouse The Requarth Observatory The Requarth Observatory was built along with the rest of the Leighty Tabor Science Building in 2000 All three 300 lb support sections that hold the 20 5 meter telescope were carried up six flights of stairs by hand It was only after the telescope was installed that the freight elevator became operational Faculty and students are continually updating the observatory to meet their scientific needs and there are currently many plans to enhance the stargazing experience for faculty students and visitors In addition to the main telescope the Leighty Tabor Science Building also features an observation deck on the fifth floor that surrounds the base of the dome This observation deck provides the perfect platform to set up the smaller 8 telescopes that are commonly used in introductory astronomy classes Even with a small 8 it is still easy to observe the rings of Saturn The Greenhouse The Greenhouse is located in the top of the Leighty Tabor Science Center and includes 4 rooms Tropical Room moist with shade for growing our speciment rainforest understory type plants Sun Room dry and unshaded for our desert species Hydroponics Room students experiment with fertilization and production practices producing high quality food crops indoors The Large Room for research with added sodium vapor lights and room for student projects The greenhouse features include a mist system for cooling an automatic watering system and a living rooftop ecosystem also know as a Green Roof The campus Green Roof Reduces carbon dioxide buildups Cools the facilities Reduces use of fossil fuels Adds an aesthetic component that provides a wildlife habitat on campus Reduces the concrete footprints of the buildings Such positive attributes are why Millikin University student Jessica Kerr a junior biology major from O Fallon Ill and Dr Judy Parrish professor of biology are finding the best technique for the construction and maintenance of a living roof ecosystem on the

  • Exercise Science & Sport Facilities | Millikin University
    host track meets of any size In July of 2000 and 2001 Millikin hosted the USATF Youth Athletic Championships on the track and in May 2001 and 2004 the Big Blue welcomed the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships Rehab Athletic Training Located within the Griswold Physical Education Center the Athletic Training facilities provide a complete 1500 square foot facility for academic and hands on education Faculty offices and student work areas are part of the facility which was completed in 1996 Areas have been designated for taping treatment first aid and rehabilitation Many Exercise Science Sport classes take place in these areas which were designed to replicate professional athletic training departments The facilities are used as athletic training rooms for the university s teams Exercise Science Sport Pavilion The exercise science and sport program at Millikin has grown considerably With over 200 students preparing for a variety of career paths the increasing demand for the program has stretched beyond campus capacity Classes are also held in up to eight different facilities across campus A new Exercise Science and Sport Pavilion in the building currently known as West Towne Square provides a central facility for this vibrant fast growing program Decatur Indoor Sports Center DISC The Decatur Indoor Sports Center DISC was built as a joint project of the Decatur Park District and Millikin University The 87 000 square foot building is an on campus athletic facility The DISC houses Millikin intramurals and indoor practices for track baseball softball and soccer The Center facilities include a 4 lane 200 meter competition grade Mondo track which includes a 6 lane sprint straightaway a jumping pit and vaulting area The infield of the track includes a soccer field with dasher boards and basketball and volleyball courts Golf practice and instruction facilities include putting greens driving nets with a swing analyzer two virtual golf simulators a net enclosure for practice using pitching and sand wedges complete with a sand trap and rough area The Dorothy McClure Ralph Allen Fitness Wellness center includes cardiovascular and strength training equipment The cardiovascular equipment includes stationary bikes recumbent bikes Stairmasters treadmills elliptical machines and an upper extremity ergometer The strength training area includes machine weights exercise stations and free weights and platforms The DISC is located on the south side of campus Fairview Park Tennis Complex and Trails Fairview Park Tennis Complex is located in Fairview Park just west of the Millikin campus In addition to being the home for the Millikin men s and women s tennis teams each summer the complex hosts the Ursula Beck Pro Tennis Classic Millikin s cross country teams utilize Fairview Park and its series of bike trails for many of their practices Fairview Park is located across Fairview Avenue from the University Fairview Park is 190 acres of green space devoted to family recreation Its pavilions are host to many gatherings and youngsters enjoy trying to lure big ones from Dreamland Lake Walkers runners and bikers enjoy a paved
