    Patrons Society About Faculty Staff Directory At A Glance Mission Values Millikin History Employment Accreditation University Marketing Administration Office of the President Office of the Provost Student Development Board of Trustees Faculty Staff Directory Media Newsroom Calendar of Events Video Gallery Photo Gallery Press Kit Choosing a Major Career Center You are here Home Campus Life Career Center Services and Resources Student Resources Choosing a Major How do you go about selecting a college major There are several methods but the best route is to take your time and make an informed choice Evaluate your values interests personality and skills by completing career assessments Career Center Explore careers that best fit your unique set of characteristics Career Center Explore the connection between majors and careers it is not always a clear cut path For instance to become a nurse one must major in nursing but to become a public relations specialist one could select from several majors Choose a career that you would find enriching and satisfying and then select the major that will get you there Talk to faculty and other students about various majors Talk to people family friends relatives etc about their careers informational interviews are a great way to learn about different vocations Talk to a career counselor in the Career Center This will help you develop and or clarify your career goals and to identify the best fit major for you Join organizations If there is a specific major you are considering or if you already have declared a major find out if there is a student organization for that major and join This will help you to connect with other students who have similar interests and to gather more information about your intended major Follow your dreams but make informed choices This means balancing your passion with additional considerations such as job market demand salary skills occupational growth projections and geographic location Your decisions may depend on how important these additional considerations are to you Take classes that match your interests and skills to fully explore and develop these areas Your advisor will help you to identify courses to consider Learn the requirements of the different programs of study you are considering in order to make an informed choice about a major The Millikin Bulletin course catalog and your faculty advisor are great resources for this Experience it Seek out opportunities to get hands on career experience through part time jobs volunteering job shadowing or internships The Career Center can help with this How do you evaluate a major You ve evaluated your values interests personality and skills You ve explored careers and majors that best fit with these Now it s time to consider the following in order to fully evaluate potential majors What preparatory courses are required What is the minimum GPA for acceptance into the major if applicable How many courses in the major are required Are the course offerings sequential or non sequential If there is a required course or

    This will communicate to the interviewer that you were listening and prepared for the interview You will have about three to five minutes to ask questions Closing the interview It will take about three to five minutes to bring the interview to a close after you have asked your questions The interviewer may outline what you can expect to happen next in the employment process and or invite you for a second interview Thank the interviewer for his her time and end the interview with a friendly smile and another firm handshake Types of Interviews As an interviewee you may find yourself in several different interview situations Here are a few examples of potential types of interviews and a few guidelines for each The one on one interview Probably the most frequently used interview this meeting incorporates an individual approach to the interview process Following the guidelines listed in the GREAT INTERVIEWEES section of this article will prepare you to excel in this type of interview The panel interview In a panel interview you will be interviewed by several individuals at one time Interviewers may take turns asking you prepared questions If you are being interviewed by a panel relax get a feel for the group dynamics and keep communication lines open by periodically making eye contact with all panel members as you respond to questions The satellite or online interview In an effort to save time and money many employers are conducting satellite or online computer interviews Typically in this type of interview the interviewee is sitting in front of a camera that is attached to a computer or television and communicates with the interviewer who communicates using similar technology The group interview The Group Interview is almost the complete opposite of the Panel Interview In the Group Interview there is one interviewer and several interviewees Basically interviewees compete to see who will surface as the leader of the group The person who answers questions professionally and diplomatically wins the competition and the right to continue in the interviewing process or to get the job This is frequently used when an employer has many people to interview and few people to conduct the interviews The meal interview Frequently utilized by business professionals the Meal Interview will give the interviewer a sense of your ability to function in social settings Brush up on your table manners and rules of professional etiquette order non messy foods treat your server with respect and order a moderately priced meal Avoid drinking alcohol because even a few ounces can lessen your ability to maintain a professional demeanor Behavioral interviewing This type of interview is becoming more and more popular as employers seek to determine whether or not you can actually demonstrate the skills needed for the position In a Behavioral Interview you may be asked to give specific examples of instances when you have demonstrated a particular skill The premise behind the Behavioral Interview is that past performance is an indicator of future performance
