  • Orchestra | Millikin University
    galaxy of cultural benefits to central Illinois in the last quarter century including symphony concerts for audiences of all types the co sponsorship of the Decatur Youth Orchestra youth scholarships for private lessons and summer music camps in school programs a competition for University soloists clinics workshops master classes with guest artists and partnerships with the music programs of area schools For the first two decades of this period the orchestra was conducted by the successive Deans of the Millikin University School of Music Ronald Gregory and Wesley Tower An important new stage of growth began in 1996 with the creation of a full time position for a professional Music Director and Conductor a position that was filled with the appointment of Dr Michael Luxner Since that time the orchestra has converted from a college community model to a fully auditioned professional model Working conditions pay scale rehearsal schedules travel allowances and repertoire are now on a par with other professional ensembles in the region and the orchestra s student members are trained in a professional environment and standard of performance The MDSO is also intensely engaged in efforts to build new audiences and to raise the Orchestra s profile in the wider community Initiatives in this area include outreach concerts media appearances contract services publications speaking engagements and new partnerships with underserved constituencies Building on a venerable history and unique spirit of town and gown cooperation the Millikin Decatur Symphony looks forward to a distinguished future of artistic achievement and community pride Students may also perform in the String Arts Ensemble a student ensemble that rehearses and performs in a workshop setting Common Questions How can I get into the Millikin Decatur Symphony Orchestra and String Arts Ensemble If you audition successfully for the Millikin University School of Music on violin viola cello or orchestral bass you will automatically become part of the orchestra program No further audition is necessary What if I play a wind or percussion instrument If you are a music major or minor on a woodwind or brass instrument your required major ensemble will always be the Concert Band or Symphonic Wind Ensemble However you may also play in the orchestra upon placement by your studio teacher Percussionists rotate between Band Wind Ensemble and Orchestra What if I won t be majoring in an orchestral instrument but I d like to keep up my playing If your primary medium is voice piano guitar or some other non orchestral instrument you may still be able to play in the orchestra as an elective Violinists violists cellists and bassists play an audition for the conductor If you play woodwind brass or percussion you must be placed by the studio teacher What if I m not going to major in music at all All Millikin students are eligible to audition for the orchestra on string instruments Wind brass and percussion players must be placed by the performance faculty Is financial aid available for playing in orchestra if it

    to wait until you are admitted to Millikin to submit the School of Music application Once we are notified of your acceptance to the university our Audition Coordinator will contact you to confirm your appointment and provide specific details Questions Contact Brynn Kickle Audition Coordinator 217 424 3934 or som millikin edu What should I expect during an audition Warm up Students will be given plenty of time to warm up prior to the audition Vocalists will have time to warm up with their accompanist Audition For your audition you will perform one or two prepared pieces Then you ll demonstrate basic music competencies including major and minor scales sight reading and for vocalists tonal memory drills and basic piano skills Faculty members from your performance area will look and listen for rhythm intonation dynamic contrast tone quality technique articulation and phrasing those qualities that make you a musician Faculty prefer instrumentalists to audition without accompaniment Vocalists should make every effort to bring their own accompanist However Millikin will provide a professional accompanist if given three weeks notice Exit interview Following the audition students and their parents will meet with a member of the music faculty to discuss the audition results At this time you will learn about the area of music to which you ve been admitted You will also learn whether or not you ve been recommended to receive a talent award The exit interview is your opportunity to ask any additional questions you or your parents may have Extended Millikin visit and activities Millikin strongly encourages performers to take advantage of their time on campus to learn all they can about the University To do so please contact the Office of Admission prior to your audition date to arrange a campus tour lunch or dinner on campus or a meeting with our financial aid advisor You are also welcome to attend classes or performances Can my parents come to my audition Your parents guardians are encouraged to come to campus with you but will not be allowed to listen to your audition They will reunite with you at the exit interview What should I perform at my audition Prepared pieces should highlight your strengths as a performer Specific requirements are outlined below Woodwinds and Brass Prepare no more than ten minutes of literature from one or two pieces Appropriate literature includes solos and etudes such as the All State District audition etudes Also be prepared to play at least three major scales to demonstrate range and technical facility Sight reading is an important aspect of the audition Students with expertise in jazz improvisation are also encouraged to include a demonstration of these skills at the audition bring a play along CD for accompaniment Percussion Percussionists should perform one piece on each of these instruments if possible keyboards marimba xylo or vibes timpani and snare drum concert or corps style Those who also play drum set should be prepared to demonstrate various styles Sight reading will be on
