    outsourcing open sourcing downsizing reengineering and innovating in myriad ways in order to be competitive innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing and unpredictable world The boundaries between work and family government and industry and organizations and supply chains are increasingly fluid At the individual level we see the necessity for new skills at negotiating managing work and family obligations and seeing interconnected human systems we see new ways of leading often in a distributed way and in virtual environments we see new diversity in the work force and the misalignment of individual needs and cultural expectations and stereotypes and we see women and people of color continue to be disadvantaged exacerbating the inequalities that already exist These are the pressing issues that the faculty and students in WOS are investigating They are addressing critical questions pertaining to work organizational design leadership and change negotiations and conflict resolution decision making careers and labor market institutions and policy making Focus On WOS Welcomes Erin L Kelly to our Faculty We are delighted to announce that Professor Erin Kelly will join the WOS and MIT Sloan School faculty in fall 2015 Welcome Erin Erin is currently is the Martindale Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota and the Director of the Life Course Center Her research focuses on the processes that lead firms to adopt new human resource policies and the impacts of these polices on employee wellbeing and organizational performance She is one of the nation s leading experts on work life policies and programs and has led teams of researchers in the design and analysis of experiments in organizations designed to improve work life integration and balance Over the past decade I have studied a variety of workplace policies and practices that challenge expectations carried over from an earlier

    Noubar Afeyan is a Senior Lecturer in the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship A technologist entrepreneur and venture capitalist Afeyan is the managing partner and chief executive officer CEO of Flagship Ventures a firm he co founded in 2000 During the past two decades Afeyan has co founded and helped build more than 20 successful life science and technology startups He was the founder and CEO of PerSeptive Biosystems a leader in the bioinstrumentation field After Applera Corporation acquired PerSeptive he served as the senior vice president and chief business officer initiating and overseeing the creation of Celera Genomics Currently Afeyan serves on a number of public and private company boards He is a director and co founder of such Flagship portfolio companies as Affinnova BG Medicine Ensemble Discovery Genstruct Helicos BioSciences Joule Biotechnologies and LS9 Previously he was a member of the founding team a director and an investor in several successful ventures including Chemgenics Pharmaceuticals Color Kinetics Antigenics EXACT Sciences and Adnexus Therapeutics Afeyan is a member of the board of overseers for Boston University and for the Boston Symphony Orchestra He also is a member of several advisory boards including the Whitehead Institute at MIT the Harvard MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and the Skolkovo School of Management in Moscow In addition he is a co founder and board member of Armenia 2020 and the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia two international economic development projects focusing on the former Soviet Republic of Armenia Afeyan has authored numerous scientific publications and patents and is the recipient of several awards In 2008 he received an Ellis Island Medal of Honor an award granted to outstanding Americans who have distinguished themselves as U S citizens and who have enabled their ancestry groups to maintain their identities while

    LearningEdge International Programs Office Faculty Openings Faculty Directory By Name By Academic Group By Research Center Retired Faculty 41134 John Akula Senior Lecturer Law Biography John Akula is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the MIT Sloan School of Management Akula has primary responsibility for the business law curriculum His courses focus on the law sensitive skills needed by managers in both young and established companies as well as the legal framework of entrepreneurship technology innovation and finance He also has taught in the Biomedical Enterprise Program of the Harvard MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology Akula was a National Science Foundation Fellow at Harvard University where his research focused on the evolution of effective legal commitments After earning a PhD and a law degree at Harvard he clerked for a justice of the highest court in Massachusetts and then spent 15 years practicing law Akula was a partner at Herrick Smith until that firm dissolved in 1985 and he then joined Goodwin Procter one of the nation s leading law firms as a partner in its business law department As a practicing lawyer Akula worked with senior managers and boards in a broad range of industries including banking and healthcare His typical role was as managing partner for clients for whom the firm was general counsel He also had a substantial trade association practice and was heavily involved in the drafting of legislation and regulation In 1991 Akula left the practice of law to return to the academic world where he divided his time between teaching at Harvard s Kennedy School of Government and MIT Sloan Now he works full time at MIT Sloan and is active in the school s executive education and international programs Akula holds a BA from Columbia University a PhD in sociology from
