    Faculty Openings Faculty Directory By Name By Academic Group By Research Center Retired Faculty 41434 Nittai Bergman Nanyang Technological University Professor Associate Professor of Finance Biography Nittai Bergman is the Nanyang Technological University Professor and an Associate Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management Bergman s research interests are in the fields of corporate governance financial contracting and behavioral corporate finance His work focuses on the ways in which financial frictions driven by agency costs impede the ability of firms to raise capital the methods firms use to alleviate these frictions and the real effects implied by the residual frictions Recent studies deal with the determinants of corporate financial contract renegotiation and the real effects of investor protection on investment and technology adoption decisions Bergman holds a BSc in mathematics from Hebrew University and a PhD in economics from Harvard University Current Research Focus Bergman is currently working on the following papers with various co authors Financing Labor Did the Community Reinvestment Act CRA Lead to Risky Lending Credit Cycles Evidence from Agricultural Land Prices and Bankrupt Retailers Nittai Bergman is the Nanyang Technological University Professor and an Associate Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School

    Biography Selected Publications Ernst Berndt is the Louis E Seley Professor in Applied Economics and a Professor of Applied Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management He is also the co director of the Biomedical Enterprise Program a joint program of MIT Sloan and the Harvard MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology Until January 2011 he was Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research Program on Technological Progress and Productivity Measurement Berndt s recent research focus has been on the changing dynamics of the healthcare industries Berndt has examined how medical innovations have affected the costs of treating selected diseases over time factors affecting the globalization of clinical trials particularly in emerging economies causes of recent cancer drug shortages in the US incentives to induce research and development into diseases prevalent in low income countries how industry funding of the U S Food and Drug Administration through user fees has affected review times and safety withdrawal rates and the impact of direct to consumer marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals on drug utilization In other research Berndt has assessed how illness and its treatment affect individuals ability to function at work More generally his research deals with assessing the sources of productivity growth and how productivity is measured Berndt has implemented methods for adjusting prices for changes in quality in the pharmaceutical healthcare personal computer hardware prepackaged software and personal digit assistant product categories He also has published research on the structure of the advertising services industries Berndt holds a BA in economics and philosophy from Valparaiso University as well as an MS and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin and an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden Ernst Berndt is the Louis E Seley Professor in Applied Economics and a Professor of Applied Economics at the

    By Name By Academic Group By Research Center Retired Faculty 41218 Dimitris Bertsimas Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management Professor of Operations Research Co Director Operations Research Center Biography Selected Publications Dimitris Bertsimas is the Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management a Professor of Operations Research and the CoDirector of the Operations Research Center at MIT A faculty member since 1988 his research interests include optimization stochastic systems machine learning and their application In recent years he has worked in robust optimization statistics healthcare and finance Bertsimas was a cofounder of Dynamic Ideas LLC which developed portfolio management tools for asset management In 2002 the assets of Dynamic Ideas were sold to American Express He is also the founder of Dynamic Ideas Press a publisher of scientific books Bertsimas has coauthored more than 150 scientific papers and the following books Introduction to Linear Optimization with J Tsitsiklis Athena Scientific and Dynamic Ideas 2008 Data Models and Decisions with R Freund Dynamic Ideas 2004 and Optimization over Integers with R Weismantel Dynamic Ideas 2005 He is currently department editor of Optimization for Management Science and former area editor of Operations Research in Financial Engineering Bertsimas has supervised 53 doctoral students and is now supervising 12 others A member of the National Academy of Engineering he has received numerous research awards including the Farkas Prize 2008 the Erlang Prize 1996 the SIAM Prize in Optimization 1996 the Bodossaki Prize 1998 and the Presidential Young Investigator Award 1991 1996 Bertsimas holds a BS in electrical engineering and computer science from the National Technical University of Athens Greece as well as an MS in operations research and a PhD in applied mathematics and operations research from MIT Dimitris Bertsimas is the Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management a
