    Event Preview Reminder Send Reminder Other events happening in June 2015 High level visual behaviors in flies from neural dynamics of a single sensory motor circuit Speaker Andrew Straw Institute of Molecular Pathology Vienna Date Monday June 01 2015 Time 3 00 PM to 4 00 PM Refreshments No Refreshments Offered Location 32 124 Host Andrea Censi CSAIL LIDS Contact Andrea Censi censi mit edu Relevant URL Reminders to Reminder Subject TALK High level visual behaviors in flies from neural dynamics of a single sensory motor circuit Speaker Andrew Straw Affiliation Institute of Molecular Pathology Vienna Title High level visual behaviors in flies from neural dynamics of a single sensory motor circuit Place room 32 124 Time Monday June 1st 3pm Abstract The brain of Drosophila contains in the order of 100 000 neurons and is capable of impressive feats of visual flight control By building custom virtual reality technologies and taking advantage of extensive genetic tools to manipulate neural circuit function our laboratory seeks to understand the behaviors algorithms and implementations that allow the fly to see and behave I will describe our recent success in using models of a well studied motion detecting circuit in predicting several visual behaviors involving object approach and background stabilization We believe these models serve as a simplifying hypothesis for the field because they predict several different fly visual motor behaviors from a simple mechanistic basis More generally we are performing additional experiments and modeling situations in which dynamic models of relevant neural circuits might be used to predict other behaviors in naturalistic settings To this end I will also discuss the Fly Mind Altering Device FlyMAD which allows thermo and opto genetic neural activity manipulation in freely moving animals Bio Andrew Straw heads a lab at the Institute of Molecular Pathology in
