  • Molloy College: What Every English Major Should Know
    s festival is Quirky Comedies and the dates and times for the films are October 1st 5 p m Moonrise Kingdom and November 12th 5 p m The World s End Come and enjoy Grammar Examination Molloy College English majors take a grammar examination which serves as a diagnostic evaluation of their basic knowledge of the English language Students must take the examination in their first semester at Molloy All English majors must pass the examination with a grade of 70 or better The test will be given on Thursday October 17 at 6 p m and Friday October 18 at 8 a m each in the library There is no fee A special opportunity for questions will be held on Thursday October 10 at 5 p m in Room S 103 Grammar notes are available in the English office and online on the English website Students failing this test must register for ENG 070 ENGLISH GRAMMAR 0 credits Students taking ENG 222 must pass the test or take the grammar course before taking ENG 222 Lambda Iota Tau The English department sponsors Molloy s chapter of the International Literary Honor Society Lambda Iota Tau The chapter Gamma Pi meets monthly on a Wednesay at 5 p m Students present a paper usually one written for a class and members offer responses The chapter meetings for fall 2013 are September 18 Reception Room October 16 S 107 November 13 Reception Room English majors are strongly advised to join this society For information on membership please contact Dr Jeffry Massey Moderator Induction of new members is Sunday April 6 at 4 p m in the Reception Room Majors Meetings At least once during each semester the department schedules a meeting for majors to discuss issues of and plans for the department In Fall 2013 majors meet at 5 p m on Wednesday September 25 in the Reception Room Attendance is mandatory Office Hours The English Office is in Room 103 of Siena Hall The office opens Monday through Friday at 7 15 a m It is open on Thursday evenings until 6 30 p m for evening advisement Robert Kinpoitner serves as evening advisor and has posted evening hours on Thursdays Faculty advisement office hours are posted outside of the English office The English Administrative Assistant is Mrs Trisha O Neill Poetry Series Professor Barbara Novack Molloy s Writer in Residence directs a series of poetry readings each semester in the Reception Room of Bishop Kellenberg Hall on Sundays at 3 p m Click on Writer in Residence for more information Seminar Students planning to register for the English Seminar ENG 491 in Spring 2013 should submit to Professors Damian Hey or Barbara Young in the English Office S 103 a sample research paper from any course but using MLA format no later than November 15 2012 The purpose is to see if the students need preparation in grammar and composition before beginning the seminar Those who fail to submit a
