do you draw your inspiration from There are so many places I m sort of a sponge If I hear something or see something in the real world that catches my eye I like to file it away for later For example I saw a very small teenage girl riding a pink power wheel down my street the other day and following traffic laws That is totally getting worked into a future story somehow All I kept thinking was Wow she looked both ways that s better than the guy that just passed in the BMW Did I mention she was pounding a Gatorade Somehow that just seems to complete the look for me As for Wayward a lot of my influences come from the westerns I grew up with My Father adores westerns particularly the TV show GUNSMOKE I ended up being more of an Eastwood spaghetti western girl but I absolutely see the poetry behind the traditional western stories The rest I picked up from a deep love of comic book superheroes and fantasy novels Somehow mixing the three tropes together just seem to fit in my mind What s your favorite Morrisville memory Most of my memories come from the Communications Journalism department This was where I spent most of my time outside of my room in Onondaga Hall I have found memories of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Neil Bandlow passing me as I d walk to class in the dead of winter wearing nothing but a polo shirt and some khaki pants I also enjoyed hanging out in the radio station and responding to current Journalism professor Brian McDowell s greeting of Daniel my brother with Brian my sister You were a student at Morrisville not so long ago Did you come to MSC already knowing what career you wanted to pursue How did your time at MSC prepare you for your career and did some of your experiences influence your current interests Like most college students I came in thinking I wanted to be one thing and ended up leaving with a slightly different view I thought I wanted a career in radio and have since worked in radio and am currently a college radio advisor but by the time I left I knew that English Literature was my passion I went on to SUNY Fredonia and eventually worked to get my Masters in English I currently teach at a small community college in the Twin Tiers and love every minute of it Of course my real passion is writing but working as a comp teacher is equally rewarding Have you always been interested in comic books My mother purchased my first comic book for me when I was 5 years old I grew up in a small town so small that our local grocery store never bothered to change out their comic book spinner rack Consequently my first comic book was already 6 years old when purchased by my mother It was actually a 3

real princess You were a teenager when you had your accident What advice do you give other teens who are going through the same experience Being so young when the accident happened was very tough on me From being able to do everything on my own to having to rely on everyone else to help I started to easily fall into a pattern I didn t do anything by myself for the first four years However being away at college I had to learn to regain my independence I would tell others who are going through the same situation as I did to find a comfort zone where you can learn to do things on your own Learn to drive play sports go to college hold gainful employment and most importantly shine from within and show the world that just because you are in a wheelchair it doesn t make you disabled it makes you differently abled What is your proudest moment I would say that my proudest moment since my accident in 2003 is when I gained my independence and earned both my associate and bachelor degrees College is hard enough but trying to get around on campus and make it to my classes in all of that snow proved to be almost impossible However I found my way to class every day and pushed myself to be the best student I could be because I had what was most important to me my independence How are you preparing for The Ms Wheelchair America Pageant in 2014 In order to prepare for the national pageant in August 2014 I will be doing a number of appearances interviews and fundraisers The appearances and interviews that I make help spread the word and awareness of the Ms Wheelchair program My goal is to create a following so that more women in wheelchairs have the opportunity to participate in the pageant My team and I have also brainstormed a few fundraising events to help raise the money needed to pay for my trip to nationals in California next year Some of the dollars raised will also be donated to the New York State competition in 2014 What was your Morrisville experience like At Morrisville I was very focused on my studies I was elected the Social Science Student of the Year in 2007 I also was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society Although I do not regret being so focused on my studies looking back now I wish I had become more active in clubs activities and campus life I made great friends at Morrisville and would urge students there to take advantage of the beautiful and peaceful campus What dorm did you live in Freshman year 2005 2006 I lived in Cayuga Hall I loved that dorm because it was centrally located on campus and I had my own handicap accessible bathroom The following years 2006 2007 I was relocated to Fountain View Hall because Cayuga was

How did you come to be on the show Luck I had applied to other shows before but nothing had really panned out This time it just felt right I just made my video and just kept getting callbacks Obviously you are pushed to the brink by the challenges what did you learn about yourself At the beginning of the show I cared a lot about what people thought of me It s all about image when you re a cheerleader and a model I started to accept myself and not care about what others thought about me I try to stay positive about my personality and my body because this is me It s hard to keep that attitude with social media and the reactions from viewers of the show but there is a lot of positivity mixed in and that helps Athena on location for The Hero What do you miss about Morrisville Everything I know that freshman come in and say that there s nothing to do in Morrisville but I had the greatest time of my life there I miss the parties Campus Hill Student Government and of course the people I met so many cool people at Morrisville that I wouldn t have met anywhere else I am not a horse girl and I am not from New York City but now I can visit them both I also miss Morrisville pizza How is The Rock Amazing He s so busy right now but I saw him every single day regardless of his tight schedule What is your anthem What gets you pumped I was a country music girl before I went to Morrisville but it would be AC DC s T N T that s going to be my wedding song Your brother and
