    for his PhD studies Dr Gravely has been selected as the recipient of the College of Arts and Science Merit Teaching Award for 2014 15 academic year Drs Emrani Franks Lamb and Divi have won the College of Arts and Sciences Innovation Proposal for 20 000 award titled Peer led Team Learning in Organic Chemistry and Psychological Statistics Dr Sayo Fakayode will be serving as the new Editor of the ACS publication Analytical Chemistry Newsletter starting January 2015 Congratulations Dr Fakayode Two long time Faculty memebrs of the chemistry department have retired in May 2014 Dr Alex Williamson retired after 36 years of service He has served the department as Chairman for several years in addition to teaching Inorganic Chemistry at the graduate and undergraduate levels Dr William Adeniyi has been the Analytical Chemistry associate professor and served the department for over 20 years A team of faculty from the Department of Chemistry have been granted a 30 000 College of Arts and Sciences 2013 Innovation Award entitled From Cook Book to Guided Inquiry Laboratory Experiments GILEs A Pilot Study for Chemsitry Laboratory Curriculum Development by Sayo Fakayode PI and Co PIs Tanya Pinder Margaret Kanipes Zerihun Assefa Marion Franks and Mufeed Basti Dr Zerihun Assefa was recognized as a recipient of the National Role Model Faculty Mentor Award from Minority Access Incorporation The recognition cites Exemplary Achievement in Motivating Counseling and Guiding Others 2013 Assefa also gave a radio interview on his research and mentoing activities with WNAA 90 1 FM station The department of Chemistry welcomes Dr Sayo Fakayode who joined the department as an Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry starting Fall 2013 Dr Fakayode brings several years of teaching and research experience from Winston Salem State University The chemistry department has amassed a record number of recognition at the college level for the 2012 13 academic year Recognitions for best Undergraduate students were given to Jessica Webb Darian Bost and Lariah Edwards The best graduate student of the year award was given to Carlos Crawford In addition the School of Graduate Studies recognized Shaka Gore for the best Thesis Award from the College of Arts And Science while Matthew Mickens recieved University wide recognition for the Best PhD Dissertation award Both Shaka and Matthew conducted their research with Dr Assefa Among faculty members Dr Zerihun Assefa was recognized as the recipient of the merit teaching award Drs Debasish Kuila and Divi Venkateswarlu along with a team of scientists have been granted a 5 million award to form the CREST Bioenergy center by the National Science Foundation Dr Kuila serves as the research director of the center A record number of graduate and undergraduate chemistry students recieved their diploma at the May 11 2013 commencement A total of eight graduate and ten undergraduates students successfully completed their education in the Departement After a long dedicated service to the department a faculty member and two staff members retired on May 10 2013 Dr Vallie Guthrie retired after a 47

    advisor selection process The selection process consists of one on one interviews with potential advisors and submission of the Advisor Selection Form ii Each student is required to meet individually with at least three professors in order to discuss potential research projects Students are encouraged to schedule these one on one meetings at a suitable time once the semester commences B During the 2 nd semester a student is expected to complete the choice of his her advisor and advisory committee and submit a signed Plan of Work POW to the Graduate School C Appointments of a Research Advisory Committee Committees are composed of Graduate faculty members from the Chemistry Dept as well as from other Departments on campus if appropriate Students are encouraged to discuss the composition of their committee with their advisor For the Matsers M S program students should select two faculty members in addition to their advisor to form a 3 person Advisory Committee The Advisory Committee will serve to advise the student and evaluate the preliminary and final examinations The first action of the Committee will be to approve the Plan of Work D Plan of Work The plan of work should be completed and submitted by the end of the 2nd semester Formal coursework The Chemistry Dept requires seventeen 17 credit hours of 700 level coursework in Chemistry selected from the attached list of courses Points of Pride Academic Athletic Arts prev Engineering Lab The College of Engineering ranks No 1 for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans Research U S News and World Report ranks the COE in the top third of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs ERC Research N C A T is the home of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center ERC Ag Research SAES brought in more
