  • N.C. A&T Bowling Team Wins National Championship - North Carolina A&T State University
    their conference championships USBC is the national governing body of bowling as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee Accomplishing this goal was huge said head coach James Williams whose team finished the season 74 37 With all of the individual awards from this year it is awesome that the team accomplished this because no one ever remembers the individual accomplishments But they remember the best team This is something that no one can take from us We will forever be national champions Several Aggies have stepped up in clutch situations the entire season On Saturday those players were junior Rakia Jenkins sophomore Kristin Shinn and sophomore MacKenzie Robinson who threw a strike in the last game for the win I felt as though the team bowled really well this weekend said Robinson There were times when it came down to the wire but we persevered The team picked each other up when we needed it the most Now that we won we can see the improvements of this team and look forward to next season It s an unbelievable experience especially being down in the beginning when we lost by one pin Shinn said We definitely battled and bought everyone s spirits up and pulled out a great game the next round We stayed on top and never gave up Our first time bowling in the ITC and we come out as champions is something no one will ever forget A T s road to the ITC title started when it won the ITC Sectionals in March At the championship A T was seeded sixth after 24 qualifying games and defeated McKendree 4 2 and St Francis twice by scores of 4 0 in bracket play to appear in the championship against Robert Morris The season started off a little rough being new and having to get acclimated to my new surroundings said Jenkins a junior transfer I believe we all had a little adjusting to do to each other but over time we got into the swing of things and we came together for a common goal Every time we bowled we bowled for each other A T and respect We accomplished a lot this year and we hope to accomplish more next season I have grown as a person and we have grown as a team one we can all be proud of This group of young ladies is special Williams said They have worked so hard this season and they committed to the grind every day I couldn t have asked for anything else Being a national champion is a rather big deal We have been fighting for respect for the last three years This shows we are dedicated and committed to winning and building a winning program Points of Pride Academic Athletic Arts prev Engineering Lab The College of Engineering ranks No 1 for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans Research U S News and World Report ranks the COE in the top

  • N.C. A&T, Partners Break Ground for Multi-Campus Site - North Carolina A&T State University
    in a groundbreaking at the Union Square Campus in downtown Greensboro Union Square s first phase will be devoted to nursing and other health care professions A T will locate its highly successful accelerated degree program in nursing and its RN to BSN program there Co located with the A T programs will be nursing programs from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Guilford Technical Community College and Cone Health By housing the programs together the four institutions can share lab space and equipment with significant cost savings N C A T was established in 1891 to prepare students for the careers of the modern day and the future Chancellor Harold L Martin Sr said at the event More than 124 years later A T is holding fast to that principle and that is why our participation in this initiative is imperative Union Square is the latest of A T s collaborations with other Greensboro area institutions UNCG in particular A T and UNCG created the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering a graduate level education and research institution The two universities also created and operate the Gateway University Research Park A T and UNCG offer a joint master s degree program in social work as well A T s 12 month accelerated nursing program serves students who want to become nurses and already have a bachelor s degree in another discipline The RN to BSN program is a bachelor s degree program for registered nurses who have associate degrees The School of Nursing plans to grow enrollment in both programs Union Square s first building will be located at the corner of Lee and Arlington streets about one and a half miles southwest of the N C A T campus The building will contain a state of the art simulation lab classrooms other labs and offices It also will include a 350 seat auditorium The estimated total value of the project is 37 million to 40 million Completion is expected in August 2016 The City of Greensboro contributed the land for the campus and will provide parking and streetscape improvements Guilford County also is a partner through lease funding for GTCC Union Square Campus is an initiative of Opportunity Greensboro a group of leaders from Greensboro businesses foundations and higher education institutions created by Action Greensboro Points of Pride Academic Athletic Arts prev Engineering Lab The College of Engineering ranks No 1 for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans Research U S News and World Report ranks the COE in the top third of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs ERC Research N C A T is the home of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center ERC Ag Research SAES brought in more than 20 million in research grant funding Webb Hall The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences SAES is the largest among the nation s HBCUs F D Bluford Library F D Bluford Library is one of the region s premier research libraries Engineering

  • Rep. John Lewis to Speak at N.C. A&T Commencement - North Carolina A&T State University
    C A T The medal is awarded annually to an individual who has strived to correct social injustice and has contributed significantly to the betterment of the world It is awarded to courageous men and women whose actions reflect those demonstrated by the four A T freshmen Ezell Blair Jr Jibreel Khazan Franklin McCain Joseph McNeil and David Richmond Jr whose peaceful sit in at a Woolworth s lunch counter ignited the national sit in movement in 1960 Lewis himself organized lunch counter sit ins as a student at Fisk University in Nashville Commencement will be held Saturday May 9 beginning at 8 30 a m in the Greensboro Coliseum First elected to the U S House of Representatives in 1986 Lewis has been called the conscience of the U S Congress He is recognized as one of the most courageous and effective leaders of the civil rights movement He was one of the original Freedom Riders in 1961 at the age of 21 Two years later he became nationally known as a leader of the civil rights movement as an organizer and speaker at the March on Washington Lewis served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 66 He was an organizer of the Selma to Montgomery march for voting rights on March 7 1965 Leading 600 marchers he suffered a broken skull when police attacked the group on the Edmund Pettus Bridge He continued his activism on voting rights into the 1970s President Jimmy Carter named him director of ACTION the federal volunteer agency in 1977 His career as an elected official began in 1981 when he was elected to the Atlanta City Council Today he represents Georgia s Fifth Congressional District which covers much of Atlanta Lewis holds a B A in religion and philosophy from Fisk and he is a graduate of the American Baptist Theological Seminary also in Nashville He has received many national and international honors including the Medal of Freedom the nation s highest civilian honor the Capital Award of the National Council of La Raza and the only John F Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for Lifetime Achievement ever granted by the John F Kennedy Library Foundation He is the co author of the bestselling and widely honored graphic novel trilogy March a memoir of the civil rights movement He published his autobiography Walking With the Wind A Memoir of the Movement in 1998 Points of Pride Academic Athletic Arts prev Engineering Lab The College of Engineering ranks No 1 for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans Research U S News and World Report ranks the COE in the top third of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs ERC Research N C A T is the home of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center ERC Ag Research SAES brought in more than 20 million in research grant funding Webb Hall The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences SAES is the largest among the nation s HBCUs F

  • N.C. A&T Honors Agricultural Leaders, Legends and Pioneers - North Carolina A&T State University
    her expertise in establishing nutrition leadership and youth development programs for families and individuals with limited resources who are served by A T s Cooperative Extension Program Dr Feaster was honored as a leader for her outstanding efforts in the advancement of her field at the local regional and state level Dr Willie L Willis of Whitsett a retired professor of animal sciences and one of the nation s few African American poultry scientists He designed A T s modern poultry research and demonstration unit at the University Farm His efforts brought in more than 2 million in research funding and his relationships with the poultry industry resulted in scholarships internships equipment and financial contributions Dr Willis was honored as a leader for exemplifying the land grant ideals of discovery learning and global engagement Dr Arthur P Bell of Greensboro professor emeritus of agricultural education at N C A T His most enduring legacy is in the innumerable lives he influenced toward productive careers in agricultural sciences during his more than 40 years in education His former students can be found today in leadership positions locally nationally and internationally Dr Bell was honored as a legend for his exceptional teaching and mentorship skills Dr Daniel D Godfrey of Greensboro a rural sociologist who retired as dean of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences He was the first administrator of A T s Cooperative Extension Program after federal legislation provided direct funding He has been inducted into numerous the halls of fame of numerous agricultural institutions including the U S Department of Agriculture s Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service Dr Godfrey was cited for achieving many groundbreaking firsts including being the first minority male to serve as associate program director for the W K Kellogg Foundation Dr Godfrey was honored as a legend for his outstanding career as an educator manager and administrator The late Dr Sidney H Evans an agricultural economist who served in many leadership roles at N C A T He was a member of the George Washington Carver Public Service Hall of Fame His research helped guide the establishment of the Greensboro Agency Transportation Express project Dr Evans was honored as a pioneer for his outstanding leadership and success in applying agricultural economics toward social progress locally and nationally The late Dr Howard F Robinson an agricultural economist who held many leadership positions at the university from the 1950s until his retirement in 1982 His many achievements included receiving the Excellence in Administration Award from N C A T Dr Robinson was honored as a pioneer for his efforts and testimony to Congress in support of farm bill funding for the 1890s Those efforts resulted in productive agricultural research and Cooperative Extension programs at N C A T and the other 1890s More information about these individuals and the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 at A T can be found by visiting Second Morrill Act Celebration Points of Pride

  • N.C. A&T Student Wins NSF Fellowship - North Carolina A&T State University
    a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship The NSF fellowship recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF supported science technology engineering and mathematics disciplines who pursue research based master s and doctoral degrees in the United States NSF received over 16 000 applications for the 2015 competition and made 2 000 fellowship award offers Wiedenheft will use her award to pursue a Ph D in mechanical engineering at Duke University The financial aspect of this award will enable me to pursue my doctoral studies she said The NSF fellowship is renewable for up to three years and covers up to 12 000 in tuition and fees It also provides the student with a 34 000 annual stipend She acknowledged the role of her fellow students as well as her professors in her success I am grateful to Dr John Kizito and all of my professors for pushing me to achieve excellence and equipping me to step into this next phase of my life Wiedenheft said What I know for sure is that success does not happen in a vacuum I learned that during my first semester here which was really tough Then several of my fellow students reached out to me and invited me to join their study groups That was my first introduction to the community here at A T and the sense that we re all in this together I think it s just part of being an Aggie While at A T Wiedenheft also has received the Goldwater Scholarship and the Buick Achievers Scholarship among other awards She has performed research in fluid mechanics with Kizito associate professor of mechanical engineering She received funding for her research from NASA the N C Space Grant program and the N C Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Kris is truly an outstanding example of the quality of engineers that A T produces said Anna Whiteside scholarship and fellowship coordinator for the A T Honors Program Wiedenheft is originally from Connecticut She earned an associate s degree in engineering science at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy New York Before transferring to A T she worked as a mechanical technician at the research and development facility of Prestone Products Points of Pride Academic Athletic Arts prev Engineering Lab The College of Engineering ranks No 1 for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans Research U S News and World Report ranks the COE in the top third of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs ERC Research N C A T is the home of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center ERC Ag Research SAES brought in more than 20 million in research grant funding Webb Hall The School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences SAES is the largest among the nation s HBCUs F D Bluford Library F D Bluford Library is one of the region s premier research libraries Engineering Professor and Student The MSIT Online Program in the School of Technology is nationally ranked by U S

    Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments CREATE Program Post received his Ph D in Physics from Stanford University in 1975 He is the associate editor in chief of the AIP IEEE Publication Computing in Science and Engineering Post established and led the Tokamak Modeling Group at the Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory He also led the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER Physics Team for which he received the American Nuclear Society ANS Outstanding Technical Achievement Award for fusion science and engineering in 1992 He led the A Division Nuclear Weapons Simulation programs at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory nuclear weapons code development programs Post is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers IEEE He received the American Society of Naval Engineers 2011 Gold Medal Award in February 2012 for the CREATE Program and has written more than 250 publications with over 6 500 citations Dr Joseph DeSimmone Dr Joseph DeSimmone is the Chancellor s Eminent Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and William R Kenan Jr Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University DeSimmone is also an adjunct member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center He has published over 300 scientific articles and has 140 issued patents in his name with over 80 patents pending DeSimmone is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences 2012 and the National Academy of Engineering 2005 He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 2005 DeSimmone has received over 50 major awards and recognitions including the 2014 Kathryn C Hach Award for Entrepreneurial Success from the ACS 2013 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors 2012 Walston Chubb Award for Innovation by Sigma Xi the 2010 AAAS Mentor Award in recognition of his efforts to advance diversity in the chemistry PhD workforce the 2009 NIH Director s Pioneer Award the 2009 North Carolina Award the 2008 winner of the 500 000 Lemelson MIT Prize for Invention and Innovation the 2007 Collaboration Success Award from the Council for Chemical Research the 2005 ACS Award for Creative Invention the 2002 John Scott Award presented by the City Trusts Philadelphia given to the most deserving men and women whose inventions have contributed in some outstanding way to the comfort welfare and happiness of mankind the 2002 Engineering Excellence Award by DuPont and the 2002 Wallace H Carothers Award from the Delaware Section of the ACS DeSimmone an innovative polymer chemist has made breakthrough contributions in fluoropolymer synthesis colloid science nano biomaterials green chemistry and most recently 3D printing He pioneered supercritical CO2 based polymerization reactions and the self assembly of molecules in compressible media He has shown the benefit of novel fluoro elastomers for soft lithographic applications including the synthesis of shape controlled nano biomaterials DeSimmone is the co founder of several companies including Micell Technologies Biostent Liquidia Technologies and EIPI
