    the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design a name he and the faculty decided upon when he became chairman of the department He went through the ranks of assistant professor to full professor He was chairman of the department for about nine years It was under his leadership that the department and N C A T obtained national accreditation for the Biological Engineering and Landscape Architecture programs making N C A T the first HBCU to claim such a distinction in the United States Dr Gayle is currently a professor of biological and agricultural engineering in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design and the Department of Chemical Biological and Bioengineering at N C A T He has a wealth of experience in soil and water conservation engineering and management He is experienced in using several soil and water management models and is an experienced member of the teaching and research faculty He has worked with many USDA staff members at both the local and national levels He served on many graduate students committees in the College of Engineering and the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences He has regularly published peer reviewed articles and made a number of presentations at professional conferences He has served as a reviewer for many organizations He is quite successful in obtaining funding for competitive proposals and has obtained over 1 2 million for undergraduate scholarships Dr Gayle was nominated as the 2012 2013 outstanding graduate from the department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at NCSU and served as President of the North Carolina chapter of Biological and Agricultural Engineers and as a member and officer of the North Carolina Board for Licensing of Geologists Career objectives To utilize my knowledge of soil and water conservation engineering earth science and groundwater engineering to enhance environmentally safe water resources engineering practices through teaching research and service or outreach technology transfer To collaborate with scientists and governmental agencies in the United States and other developed and developing countries to determine practices for efficient agricultural production soil and water conservation sustainable engineering practices food safety and nutrition and conservation of natural resources To assist disadvantaged farmers in becoming more sustainable to have access to modern tools and technology in water management and to enable farmers in general to conduct practices for better soil conservation and energy use To create a learning environment that will develop a community of biological and agricultural engineering scholars to better serve society in managing our vital natural resources to enhance environmental sustainability food and water security Points of Pride Academic Athletic Arts prev Engineering Lab The College of Engineering ranks No 1 for the number of degrees awarded to African Americans Research U S News and World Report ranks the COE in the top third of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs ERC Research N C A T is the home of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center ERC Ag Research SAES brought in more than 20 million in research
