    6 046 ac in Washington County NC on Albemarle Sound Much of BNS has standing water much of the year The salinity wedge moves up and down Albemarle Sound and BNS is the only CNR forest that may experience saline water Sea level rise is evident on the tract The fresh water marsh along Deep Creek in the southern portion of the tract is florally unique see Natural Heritage program descriptions There is a road system and abundant wildlife The tract is leased for hunting Land management responsibilities are assumed by the CNR Wildlife program Considerable wildlife research has been conducted in the last decade Bald Eagles have been seen on site Beaver control is necessary to retain the road system and maintain good relations with adjacent agricultural land owners A small NW portion of the BNS shoreline is abutted by coastal residential development from Pea Ridge 3 hour s drive from NCSU Hosley Forest Hosley Forest 265 acres in Franklin County NC a gift to CNR was worn out farmland on the bluffs above Shocco Creek a tributary of the Tar River but planted to pine by Wilfred Hosley Shocco Creek is home to endangered mussels Tar Spiny Mussel and the Dwarf Wedge Mussel and most neighboring tracts have conservation easements in place to protect water quality Tract is leased for hunting No facilities or research on the site Bottomland hardwood along the Shocco Creek floodplain has been hy graded in the past and is full of invasive species and covered with vernal pools 1 5 hour s drive from NCSU James Goodwin Forest Goodwin Forest 1 320 acres Moore County NC Set on the northern edge of the Sandhills this tract is dominated by 1 067 acres of plantation pine and managed for an economic return that funds multiple undergraduate scholarships annually A good road system allows year round access but there are no facilities Goodwin Forest is bordered on the east by Killets Creek The forest is leased for hunting Approximately 100 acres are planted in longleaf pine and although there are no red cockaded woodpeckers on the property there are known clusters nearby No ongoing research Surrounding land use is predominantly forestry with scattered small pockets of agriculture and residential Carthage the Moore County seat is 3 miles away 2 hour s drive from NCSU Chowan Swamp Chowan Swamp 3 736 ac Gates County NC Chowan Swamp is the most flooded CNR tract The tract is split by Bennetts Creek downstream from Merchant s Millpond State Park and just upstream from Holiday Island in the Chowan River Chowan Swamp is fairly inaccessible with no roads Road access through adjacent rural agricultural fields leads to edge of swamp There is no research or facilities onsite Best access is by boat or slowly on foot Atlantic white cedar occurs on the tract but has been continually felled by periodic hurricanes so large timber is spotty Large cypress trees grow along the considerable shoreline State parks would like to
