    that it can meet our nation s increasing demands Look for information about ISE s Health Systems Certificate Program Despite the best efforts and intentions of many dedicated health care individuals The cost of healthcare is more than 17 of the US Gross National Product These costs are growing at more than three times the rate of inflation Tens of thousands of Americans die and many more are harmed within a disjointed healthcare processes Waste accounts for as much as 40 of healthcare costs The presence of multiple providers and payers none of whom have visibility of the entire cycle of care limits performance Healthcare delivery is complex to the point of straining comprehension Health Systems Engineering HSE targets the delivery of healthcare over the entire patient care cycle which includes screening vaccination preventive medicine diagnosis treatment medications monitoring and checkups Model based decision tools create engineered innovations in clinical operations individual treatment choice and supporting supply chains to advance safe high quality consistent and accessible healthcare while avoiding unnecessary costs HSE focuses on the design of engineered processes to combine resources and support clinical decision making to assure its effective implementation over the entire course of a patient s care At NC State we have developed a Health Systems Engineering research and academic program that educates engineering students about health services We are a founding member of the Healthcare Engineering Alliance HEA and partner with UNC CH Duke and the Durham VA to continue developing a world class Health Systems Engineering research program Personalized Medicine Cluster Through the Chancellor s Faculty Excellence Program NC State University has established a Faculty Cluster in Personalized Medicine Discovery focused on the development of quantitative methods toward the promise of personalized medicine and their implementation in practice Industrial and Systems Engineering has partnered
