    Production Systems Systems Optimization Friends Senior Project Sponsors Contact Us About What is ISE Mission Leadership Professional Recognition History Departmental Awards Home Research Partners and Outreach Research Areas Ergonomics Human Systems Engineering Human Systems Engineering offers coursework and research to support students and practitioners in solving human physical and cognitive performance issues in industrial service and transportation systems We provide instruction in human performance measurement and modeling human machine system design human computer interaction occupational safety and risk management and occupational biomechanics Coursework includes ergonomics theory models methods and design principles in addition to labs providing hands on experience in applying methods to industrial problems Our research focuses on cognitive workload models using virtual reality simulators to solve challenging problems in human performance in automotive and aerospace We design complex systems that involve human computer interfaces and are developing innovative ways to use brain computer interfaces for neurorehabilitation NC State Human Factors and Ergonomics HFE Area The ISE department houses three labs in the HFE area including the Biomechanics Lab the Cognitive Ergonomics Lab and the Human Computer Interaction Lab Examples of research being conducted in our lab by ISE faculty and students include assessment of driver situation awareness under hazardous driving conditions computational cognitive modeling of pilot behavior in using advanced commercial aircraft automation electromyography analysis of muscle tasks and potential for repetitive stress injuries haptic interface and VR design for blind users and motor control rehabilitation applications The Ergonomics Center of North Carolina ISE faculty work with trained ergonomists and engineers at the Center on both theoretical and applied research They conduct product and process evaluations and find answers to a broad range of questions relating to ergonomics and biomechanics Professors in this Research Area Currie Nancy J Kaber David B Nam Chang S Stoll Regina Swangnetr Manida
