    is optional Thus this degree may be obtained by course work only Degree Requirements Masters Degree Progress Checklist Master of Science in Industrial Engineering MSIE The Master of Science M S degree involves some depth of study in a specified area of concentration and requires a research thesis It is a research oriented degree and is ordinarily considered to be a prerequisite for entry to the Ph D program Students pursuing this degree receive priority consideration for assistantship awards Graduates who complete this degree might work in research staff positions in consulting firms industrial organizations or government but not at levels as analytically advanced as Ph D s The M S graduate here would have basic understanding of IE with some depth of study in the general area of concentration as well as in the specific thesis topic A minimum of 30 hours including 9 hours in a minor and 3 6 hours of thesis research is required for this degree As part of a breadth requirement students must select a course from three of the five breadth requirement groups as well as one course from a group that includes the fields of statistics computer science and mathematics Degree Requirements Masters Degree Progress Checklist List of Thesis Titles Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering Ph D The Doctor of Philosophy Ph D degree is given upon demonstration by the student of comprehensive knowledge and scholarly work at the highest level A series of written and oral examinations is required as well as a written dissertation based upon results of original investigation Students pursuing this degree are given first priority for assistantship awards The degree requires a minimum of 72 hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor s degree including coursework in major and minor areas of concentration together with credit
