    valuable records are identified for permanent retention in the Archives and that documents with no historical significance are appropriately destroyed after there is no continuing administrative fiscal or legal need for their retention The Archives also collects and maintains records papers photographs printed material and audio visual material that document the life of the Catholic Church and her people as lived in the American context and is recognized as one of the nation s foremost archival repositories for the study of American Catholicism The Archives has collected these materials since the nineteenth century and the availability of these important scholarly resources at Notre Dame is a major contribution to the academic mission of the University How to Use this Website The website is divided into ten major sections You are currently in the About the Archives section which contains general information about the Archives and our policies and procedures Information for Researchers This section provides necessary information regarding Archives history fees and services It is helpful whether you are visiting the Archives in person or requesting information from home About Our Collections General descriptions of the different types of material in the Archives can be found here If you are interested in University records Catholic historical manuscript collections photographs audio visual material or printed material you should seek additional information and links to the search pages here Search Our Collections From this page you can perform a search across all of the Archives online finding aids and also search unique individual databases such as an index to early Notre Dame students from 1849 to 1912 Records Management This section is intended for University departments only and contains information for faculty and staff on how to manage records Research Resources This section provides documents online exhibits statistics full text publications and

    the Archives in person it is helpful to contact us via email if you have any questions about how to search the collections and to receive instructions on how to order reproductions of records The Archives reading room contains general publications relating to Notre Dame such as the bulletins of study yearbook student newspaper and magazine and the alumni magazine In addition the reading room houses reference material pertinent to the history of the Catholic Church such as a complete run of the Official Catholic Directory and some editions of the Catholic Almanacs and Catholic encyclopedias Finding aids not available online are also available in the reading room All other material including University records manuscript collections and photograph audio visual and microfilm collections are housed in closed stacks and therefore must be requested via a call slip and retrieved by Archives staff If you will be visiting the Archives the University s website provides a campus map and driving directions Parking near the Hesburgh Library is limited there is a small visitor lot located northeast of the library building Information in this section includes Services Fees and Forms This section explains the fees and forms associated with the various services

    and publishing Catholic higher education Catholic social action Catholic laity Catholic clergy religious orders charismatic renewal and the liturgical movement The manuscript collections also include the personal papers of individuals associated with the University including faculty and staff alumni and other supporters Many of these papers document the donor s individual experiences at Notre Dame However the records of some historically important collections may have little to do with the University but the donors themselves have a connection For example the personal papers of alumnus Frank Walker focus mainly on his experience as Postmaster General during the Franklin Roosevelt administration Photographs The photograph collection contains over one million images in print negative slide and digital format The photographs reflect a variety of subjects within the Archives collecting scope with the majority documenting life at Notre Dame from the 1850s to the present All photographs are open for use by researchers and a very limited number of images are available for viewing online Audio Visual The Archives audio visual collections consist of material from both the University and Catholic historical collections and include nearly twenty different video and audio formats Notre Dame related audio visual collections document a wide variety of campus activities from the early twentieth century to the present day including commencements faculty lectures and visiting speakers student events classroom instruction fund raising and public relation campaigns theater and music productions liturgies and athletics The Archives also holds audio visual material relating to the organization and individuals documented in the Catholic historical collections including oral histories recordings of meetings speeches and lectures documentaries public relation programs footage of the activities of religious orders and parishes and liturgies Printed The Archives printed collections consist of printed ephemera brochures posters programs pamphlets articles and books that typically come to the Archives

    records retention schedules and records management procedures so that University Records are handled appropriately from their creation to their ultimate disposition University Records are defined as recorded information created or received in the course of conducting University business and kept as evidence of such activity This definition extends to all record media and formats including paper files electronic files email film and print graphics audio and video recordings and any other form of recorded information Records management is the systematic and administrative control of records throughout their life cycle to ensure efficiency and economy in their creation use handling control maintenance and disposition 1 The goal of the records management program at Notre Dame is to ensure that active records are available for business use that historical records are retained for research purposes in the University Archives and that inactive records are disposed of in accordance with established procedures and schedules The University Archives works with Notre Dame offices and with the Office of General Counsel to develop and implement records retention schedules Records retention schedules provide thorough inventories of the records series created by an office in the course of business These schedules also indicate how long an office is required to keep records and what must be done with the records when the retention period is fulfilled To assist offices with the implementation of sound records management practices the Archives provides general education and training as well as private consultation on any office s records management concerns Records management offers several significant advantages to individual offices and to the University enhancing employee productivity and efficiency with quick and reliable access to information reducing costs of records creation organization retrieval dissemination storage and maintenance ensuring compliance with legal requirements and protecting the University in case of litigation reducing risks

    December of 1971 provided news and feature articles of interest to Notre Dame graduates Notre Dame Magazine replaced it starting in 1972 Notre Dame Daily student newspaper 1923 1924 The Notre Dame Daily first appeared on the twentieth of May 1923 It published thirteen issue in its first volume concluding at the end of the academic year on the sixth of June Its second and final volume covered the 1923 1924 academic year in 128 issues beginning on the twenty third of September and ending on the fifteenth of June Notre Dame Schedule of Courses Hours of Instruction 1928 2013 Booklets providing information on class schedules often with both preliminary and revised versions In the twenty first century these booklets have generally been called The Hours of Instruction Digital images courtesy of the Notre Dame Registrar s Office Capstan 1943 1945 During World War II the United States Navy trained many officers at Notre Dame The naval program published its own yearbook called Capstan Notre Dame Press Releases 1947 1971 These press releases came from 1947 1953 1967 and 1969 1971 Most of them came from microfilm and the gaps in coverage reflect gaps on the microfilm We will continue to scan press releases but for the time being in spite of the gaps we hope that this collection will provide some help for researchers interested in Notre Dame history We also have an index of press releases that covers 1994 2003 Press releases on the Notre Dame News website date back to 1997 Notre Dame A Magazine 1948 1965 The Notre Dame Foundation published this quarterly magazine which includes much of general interest to anyone studying Notre Dame in the middle of the twentieth century Notre Dame President s Newsletter 1958 1971 Examples of the President s Newsletter scanned from microfilm This collection includes the last issue of 1958 and the first of 1959 the last issue of 1967 and most issues from 1969 through 1971 Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival Programs 1960 2010 The Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival an annual event since 1960 emphasizes jazz education and performance It is one of the oldest collegiate jazz festivals in the United States Notre Dame Voice student newspaper 1963 1966 The Voice of Notre Dame predecessor of the more familiar daily Observer appeared somewhat irregularly every week or so between 1963 and 1966 though issues were sometimes printed as little as two days apart The Observer student newspaper 1966 2015 The Observer started providing news for the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary s College starting in the fall of 1966 first as a weekly then bi weekly and soon as a daily newspaper Starting with the issue of October 10 2009 the Notre Dame Saint Mary s Observer appeared online http ndsmcobserver com Notre Dame Report 1971 2008 The Notre Dame Report serves as the official record of University business and includes minutes of select University committees other documentation issued by the University faculty and committee rosters
