    Libraries MERLN News Social Media Press Releases Images Press Release Archive 2015 2 2014 14 2013 17 2012 7 Press Releases UK and US Military Leaders Participate in New Annual Forum nextrelease April 09 2014 PRINT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact Daniel Magalotti Acting Public Affairs Officer National Defense University 202 685 3140 daniel magalotti ndu edu Washington DC Military leaders from the United Kingdom and United States will meet this week at the National Defense University NDU in Washington to discuss common strategic policy challenges and develop lasting relationships to symbolize the enduring military partnership between the US and the UK This is the inaugural meeting of the UK US Military Leaders Forum and will be held from 6 10 April 2014 Envisioned last year by General Martin E Dempsey Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff and General Sir Nicholas Houghton the UK Chief of Defence Staff this will be the first annual meeting of senior British and American military leaders It will be held by the US National Defense University in cooperation with the British Royal College of Defence Studies Twenty four British and American senior officers will attend representing all branches of each nation s armed forces The group will use this opportunity to discuss common strategic policy challenges and consider emerging trends in the Middle East and North Africa regions particularly the implications of rapid social and political change across the region The group will study the issues together through a series of lectures discussions and exercises Following the forum participants will brief their findings to the US and UK Combined Chiefs Conference in June The US and UK Combined Chiefs Conference is an annual meeting of the heads of the UK and US armed forces It follows last year s historic gathering of UK

    Releases Challenge Looks to Improve Post War and Post Conflict Zones nextrelease March 20 2014 PRINT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact Samuel Bendett Center for Technology National Security Policy National Defense University 202 433 5235 samuel bendett ndu edu Washington DC Each year a large number of civilians are killed and injured by unexploded weapons such as artillery shells land mines mortars grenades and bombs These explosive remnants of war ERW regularly disrupt daily civilian life in post war and conflict zones To combat the problem the Center for Technology and National Security Policy CTNSP at the National Defense University NDU is challenging developers to come up with a mechanism to keep eyes on the street and transform ordinary citizen s mobile devices into tools that can be used to report ERW and land mines to the appropriate authorities The contest encourages developers to develop open source applications as well as to leverage existing apps All submissions must demonstrate how the new or improved application will produce or improve ERW or land mine reporting and how the solution will be sustained following the completion of the competition A 3 000 cash award will be given for first place Second place will receive 1 500 and third place will receive 500 The top two submissions may see their application rolled out in countries affected by ERW where their solution could be put to work immediately The competition kicks off on 18 March 2014 at 12 00 p m EST and submissions will be accepted until 20 June 2014 Complete contest rules and entry requirements can be found at http erwlandmineapps challengepost com CTNSP is a Department of Defense funded think tank that conducts research and analysis on emerging trends in science and technology strategic forecasting and program assessment The Center divides these

    about his decision he said After careful thought and much reflection I have decided to retire 31 January 2014 from my position as Chancellor of the National Defense University iCollege Having served over four decades in government service 30 years at National Defense University NDU nearly 23 years at the iCollege as Dean of Faculty and Academic Programs initially and as Chancellor the last 14 years it is time to explore new challenges in a new venue The time has passed swiftly when you tackle a multi dimensional job like this putting yourself and family all in the results are rewarding but incredibly demanding I will be forever grateful for the opportunities these positions provided for the many talented colleagues I have been honored to collaborate with and the lifelong friendships and relationships established To be associated with such distinguished professionals who work with and support you in trust relationships is a priceless gift The college collectively and myself individually have been recognized globally for some very important contributions to the IT and cyber workforce communities I attribute these successes to the incredibly creative talented and dedicated faculty and staff who have served with me at the college My contribution was to provide the strategic vision global strategies and top cover so they could exercise their professional expertise in a meaningful uninhibited manner We made unparalleled advances due to an unbelievable team effort Under Childs leadership over 16 000 alumni across the Federal government benefit from iCollege courses In 2008 the college established the Chief Financial Officer Academy which today brings chief information officers and chief financial officers together to study information strategies In 2010 the college gained authority to offer a master s degree in Government Information Leadership a steadily growing program The college is supporting Department of Defense DoD international outreach efforts by establishing a CIO Academy in Romania and teaching courses in Sweden and Singapore plus supporting the NATO Cyber Center in Estonia In 2010 through 2012 the college under the guidance of the DoD CIO expanded its international reach offering landmark regional conferences on cyber collaboration and infrastructure protection in Singapore UK UAE and Thailand collaborating with international leaders and global companies In 2013 Dr Childs was inducted into the prestigious Government Computer News GCN Hall of Fame Dave Wennergren who held several executive positions in DoD calls Childs a truly innovative spirit and a perpetual energy machine who is regularly looking over the horizon for new opportunities Bob was always a step ahead with a new course offering a new approach or a new program ready to be deployed Wennergren said and created the learning environment for IT professionals around the world to survive and thrive Childs previously has been recognized as a Federal 100 award winner and Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association AFCEA International IT Executive of the Year Asked about future plans Childs stated There are numerous cyber leadership education needs and demands in the US and internationally I intend to explore

    L Waddell Named as New CAPSTONE Senior Director nextrelease January 31 2014 PRINT RELATED MEDIA Waddell Bio Related Biography Related Document FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 31 2014 Washington DC MG Gregg F Martin President of the National Defense University NDU announced today that Rick L Waddell Ph D Major General US Army Reserve will serve as the new Senior Director of CAPSTONE Waddell will officially report to NDU in the next few months CAPSTONE is a congressionally mandated course for all newly promoted active duty one star general and flag officers and is executed four times annually Also in Waddell s portfolio will be Keystone and Pinnacle which are conducted twice annually and educate Command Senior Enlisted and two and three star general and flag officers respectively Waddell is currently the Deputy Commander for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs at the U S Southern Command in Miami FL He has made eight deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan working at the multinational and interagency level of MNF I and ISAF His military career includes serving on the White House staff with the National Security Council the Office of the Secretary of Defense Staff the Secretary of the Army Staff and Combatant Command Staffs CENTCOM and SOUTHCOM In the corporate sector Waddell has spent 17 years working in South America with companies such as Anglo American BG Group and Wal Mart Previously on the faculty at the United States Military Academy at West Point Waddell was also a Distinguished Graduate and Rhodes Scholar He has received the George Washington Honor Medal and the Hugh G Nott Prize for his writings His publications and presentations have been used in staff and defense college curricula in the United States United Kingdom and Latin America Waddell holds a bachelor s degree from the United States Military

    685 3140 daniel magalotti ndu edu Washington DC Former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell United States Army Ret received an honorary degree of Doctor of National Security Affairs from National Defense University NDU on Wednesday 11 December at 1300 in Abraham Lincoln Hall Auditorium Dr John Yaeger NDU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs presented the degree and introduced General Powell General Powell began his military service when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating from the Army ROTC program at City College of New York in 1958 General Powell received a master s degree from the National War College in 1976 and later served as President Reagan s National Security Advisor from 1987 89 and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for both Presidents Bush and Clinton from 1989 1993 During his tenure as Chairman General Powell oversaw such operations as the intervention in Panama and Operation Desert Storm Following his retirement in 1993 General Powell served as Secretary of State for President Bush from 2001 2005 Aside from his government service General Powell is the Honorary Chair of the Colin L Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at the City College of New York and the founder of America s Promise Alliance an organization that seeks to give children the fundamental resources they need to succeed General Powell s numerous awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal the Army Distinguished Service Medal two Presidential Medals of Freedom the President s Citizens Medal and the Congressional Gold Medal as well as induction into the French Legion of Honor and honorary knighthood by H M Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom He was also previously inducted into the NDU National Hall of Fame in 2004 General
