    or See all conditions A Z All Search Northwell Search Newsroom Subscribe Submit News Search news Press releases Media coverage Patient stories Newsletters Cohen Children s Medical Center Forest Hills Hospital Franklin Hospital Glen Cove Hospital Huntington Hospital Lenox Hill Hospital Long Island Jewish Medical Center North Shore University Hospital Plainview and Syosset Hospitals Southside Hospital Staten Island University Hospital Behavioral Health Services Northwell Health Cancer Institute Doctoring a physician publication of Northwell Health The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Northwell Health Foundation Department of Medicine The New Standard Northwell Health Orthopaedic Institute Post Acute Care Services Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Phelps Memorial Hospital Center Media resources Focus onHealth Fewer than 1 in 5 Nurses Comply with Guidelines for Standard Precautions January 20 2016 9 55am Washington January 19 2016 Only 17 4 percent of ambulatory care nurses reported compliance in all nine standard precautions for infection prevention according to a study published in the January issue of the American Journal of Infection Control the official publication of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology APIC Researchers from Northwell Health formerly North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System conducted a study of 116 ambulatory care nurses to measure self reported compliance with standard precautions knowledge of hepatitis C virus HCV and behavioral factors influencing compliance The highest rate of compliance was reported with always wearing gloves 92 percent followed by always wearing a face mask 70 percent Only 63 percent of participants reported that they always wash hands after removal of gloves and 82 percent reported that they always wash hands after provision of care The study also found knowledge of HCV was variable with more than one in four 26 percent erroneously believing that it is commonly spread through sexual contact 14 percent incorrectly believing that HCV causes premature death 12 percent not knowing HCV antibodies can be present without an infection and 11 percent not knowing there are multiple HCV genotypes Self reported data might be an overestimate of actual compliance and that makes these results of particular concern for potential exposure to bloodborne diseases concluded the study authors Overall the ambulatory care nurses chose to implement some behaviors and not others and this behavior puts them at risk for acquiring a bloodborne infection Standard precautions are the minimum infection control practices that should be used in the care of all patients at all times whether or not they appear to be infectious They are used to protect healthcare workers and patients from transmission of diseases that can be spread by contact with blood body fluids non intact skin and mucous membranes The nurses surveyed in this study were assessed based on these nine precautions I provide nursing care considering all patients as potentially contagious I wash my hands after the removal of gloves I avoid placing foreign objects on my hands I wear gloves when exposure of my hands to body fluids is anticipated I avoid needle recapping I avoid the disassembling of

    maintaining an organizational culture that recognizes the importance of leadership execution accountability and a commitment to growth and innovation For this installment in our Leadership series Mr Solazzo explains our health system s partnership strategy what it takes to execute successfully and how it fits with our emphasis on innovation He also details on how partnerships benefit the business and patient sides of the health care equation Question from interviewer The health care marketplace changed significantly in recent years Why are business partnerships important What do they add to the health care system Mr Solazzo In this marketplace it s important to get to market quickly To do that you need to seek partners When we consider partners we re looking for a few things We re looking for somebody who can bring management expertise someone who shares the same culture and someone who can get us to market quickly Q Do most health care organizations have a partnership strategy How has your partnership strategy evolved Mr Solazzo North Shore LIJ s partnership strategy goes back to our focus on innovation in health care I don t think that many health care systems have partnerships or have organizations really focused on developing them For North Shore LIJ this has been an evolution Over time we ve seen the necessity to really focus as an organization to allow us to expand in this marketplace Q How do you identify and qualify potential business partners Mr Solazzo We re looking for opportunity When you look at where the opportunity exists it s very broad You have to ask What does the consumer want There is a lot of opportunity in the ambulatory market We re trying to figure out how to get to that consumer in different venues So whatever point of access the consumer wants that s where we want to be and we re looking for partners to help us get there Executing Successful Innovations Q How do you typically structure and manage these partnerships Mr Solazzo Each partnership is unique Each partner is going to bring a level of expertise that you want to take advantage of and they re going to want us to bring the right resources to partner with them We have to structure each relationship in a unique way Q What impact have these partnerships had on North Shore LIJ s bottom line Mr Solazzo The early partnerships which have been in place for a couple of years are starting to see a positive bottom line One of the reasons that we partner is we re trying to figure out other avenues to increase revenue in today s very difficult health care environment Many of our joint ventures are in startup mode They re all beating their business plans and we expect them to be accretive to the bottom line Q Tell us how partnerships have benefitted the business side and the patient side of the equation Mr Solazzo Different partnerships serve different purposes One

    Hospital Plainview and Syosset Hospitals Southside Hospital Staten Island University Hospital Behavioral Health Services Northwell Health Cancer Institute Doctoring a physician publication of Northwell Health The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Northwell Health Foundation Department of Medicine The New Standard Northwell Health Orthopaedic Institute Post Acute Care Services Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Phelps Memorial Hospital Center Media resources Focus onHealth Saving Face Queens Girl Treated for Rare Facial Venous Malformation at Cohen Children s Medical Center Michelle Pipia Stiles February 9 2016 11 44am New Hyde Park NY Almost 2 year old Camila Alzate and her family from Queens NY are grateful to surgeons at Cohen Children s Medical Center CCMC a member of Northwell Health for having successfully treated Camila for a rare type of venous malformation VM a non malignant mass consisting of large dilated veins involving almost all of the right side of her right face The lesion had grown since Camila s birth and if left untreated it could have interfered with the normal development of her craniofacial structures Post surgery the surgeons were able to completely remove the tumor involving the upper half of her face without extreme blood loss or injury to the facial nerves It is really surprising to see the changes that my daughter has had due to these treatments said Mrs Alzate Camila s mother We are very happy and grateful to Camila s doctors for their knowledge dedication and unconditional support Soon after birth Camila and her family met with CCMC s pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgeon Nicholas Bastidas MD and Rafael Ortiz MD chief of neuro endovascular surgery and interventional neuroradiology at Lenox Hill Hospital a member of Northwell Health When Camila was 5 months old her first treatment sclerotherapy was performed by Dr Ortiz With sclerotherapy a needle is inserted into the venous malformation under X ray and ultrasound guidance and medications are infused to shrink the abnormal blood vessels and reduce the size and appearance of the malformation said Dr Ortiz This makes it a safer and more effective procedure while protecting the critical structures of the face at the same time Camila s combined treatment of sclerotherapy and surgical removal of the lesion was performed at CCMC on February 8 2016 In the hospital s hybrid operating room Dr Ortiz performed the sclerotherapy using a medication called STS which was injected into the large dilated veins causing the walls of the abnormal veins to collapse Upon completion of the sclerotherapy Dr Bastidas and pediatric otolaryngologist Jeffrey A Cheng MD then surgically removed the lesion pausing to allow further injections when significant bleeding was encountered This hybrid approach is unique in that it allows the surgeon and the interventionalist to remove large and complicated vascular malformations in a single session and reduces the risk of significant bleeding said Dr Bastidas Only a handful of institutions in the world offer hybrid surgery for the treatment of vascular malformations and CCMC has a dedicated operating room for
