reality The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People reported on their website that one in six black men were incarcerated since 2001 and that assuming the trend continues one in three black men can expect to be imprisoned during their lives VERDICT True Who in America is satisfied that we have more people in jail than any other country on Earth including China Disproportionately African American and Latino Who is satisfied that 51 percent of African American young people are either unemployed or underemployed Bernie Sanders in response to Clinton s answer on African American perception The New York Times reported in 2008 that the U S has roughly 2 3 million people imprisoned leading the world in imprisonment rates China is second in the world with the number of people imprisoned with 1 6 million people The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that as of Dec 2015 the unemployment rate for male and female black people between the ages of 16 and 19 was 23 7 percent VERDICT Sanders remarks about the incarceration rate in the U S were true however his statistics about the unemployment rates for African Americans was misleading While that specific demographic is leading in unemployment rates in the U S it is not as high as he stated I drove our incarceration rate down to 20 year lows and drove violent crime down to 30 year lows and became the first governor south of the Mason Dixon Line to repeal the death penalty Martin O Malley on his time as mayor of Baltimore and governor of Maryland FBI crime data from 1999 2009 shows that Part 1 crimes including criminal homicide forcible rape robbery aggravated assault arson and motor vehicle theft did decline during his term as Baltimore Mayor from 1999 to 2006 During that time the crime rate fell by 48 percent In 2011 five years after O Malley left his position as Mayor Baltimore s homicide rate obtained the 30 year low O Malley is referring to During this time the homicide rate was 197 and according to the Baltimore Sun the Baltimore Police Department had a different strategy than he had when in office As for the death penalty U S News reported that on May 2 2013 Maryland did in fact become the first state south of the Mason Dixon Line to repeal the death penalty VERDICT O Malley s statements about the incarceration rate and death penalty are true however his statement about the 30 year low is misleading I voted for it the Affordable Care Act but right now what we have to deal with is the fact that 29 million people still have no health insurance We are paying the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs getting ripped off And here s the important point we are spending far more per person on healthcare than the people of any other country Bernie Sanders on healthcare The Centers for Disease Control reported as of

Hillary s supporters are echoing Donald s attacks on me because Hillary wants to face Donald Trump in the general election Ted Cruz on Trump s accusation that Cruz is not a legally natural born citizen In his biography on Harvard University s website it is stated that Tribe has taught at Harvard s law school since 1968 and he was appointed by President Obama and General Holder to serve as the first Senior Counselor for Access to Justice in 2010 Tribe helped found the American Constitution Society a liberal legal organization in 2001 In the 2000 legal case Bush vs Gore Tribe served on Gore s legal team but did not argue the case at the Supreme Court When it comes to Hillary Clinton Tribe has declared his support for Obama as he was his professor at Harvard but he has not formally declared his support for Clinton VERDICT Mostly true Tribe does demonstrate liberal views is a Harvard law professor and spoke in favor of Gore but he is not an official supporter of Clinton And frankly it just came out and in Iowa now as you know Ted in the last three polls I m beating you So you know you shouldn t misrepresent how well you re doing with the polls Donald Trump in response to Cruz s statement that his numbers are increasing while Trump s decrease In a survey released by Quinnipiac University on Jan 11 a reported 31 percent of Republicans would vote in favor for Trump as opposed to 29 percent in favor of Cruz Trump has led the past three polls by the University with 28 percent in favor on Dec 14 and 25 percent in favor on Nov 24 Cruz on the other hand has favors of 27 percent on Dec 14 and 23 percent on Nov 24 VERDICT Look I have an A plus rating in the NRA and we also have a reduction in gun violence because in Florida if you commit a crime with a gun you re going away You re going away for a long long while Jeb Bush on gun control According to a Crime in Florida report by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for Jan to June 2015 the followings statistics for firearms have been reported murders with firearms increased from 336 in 2014 to 356 in 2015 forcible rapes with firearms decreased from 80 in 2014 to 67 in 2015 forcible fondling with firearms stayed the same with 3 in 2014 and 2015 robberies with firearms increased from 4 021 in 2014 to 4 073 in 2015 and aggravated assaults with firearms increased from 7 341 in 2014 to 8 265 in 2015 VERDICT Aside from the number of forcible rapes and fondling the number of crimes that occur in the state of Florida with firearms have increased in the past year When you Barack Obama became president you had a Democratic Congress and a filibuster proof Democratic Senate You had

bad things It is the good people who do nothing If the thousands of young men killed by gun violence every year across America were young poor and white rather than young poor and black it is hard to imagine that our Congress would continue to block common sense measures to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill Martin O Malley at the U S Conference of Mayors in San Francisco The Second Amendment to the Constitution isn t for just protecting human rights and it s not only to safeguard your right to target practice It is a constitutional right to protect your children your family your home our lives and to serve as the ultimate check against governmental tyranny for the protection of liberty Ted Cruz in an article in the New York Times While the president did propose some reasonable measures I m disappointed yet not surprised to see so much emphasis on gun control and not enough on key contributors to mass shootings mental illness and the impact of the entertainment industry s glorification of violence Rick Santorum in response to President Obama s gun control recommendations in 2013 Protecting and preserving our constitutional freedoms is one of the most important things a governor can do The Bill of Rights forbids the government from infringing on the freedoms unique to America but that hasn t deterred politicians who want to treat the Second Amendment as optional and strip us of the right to keep and bear arms I will fight these attempts to get around the U S and Wisconsin Constitutions and I will strive to protect our rights today and for future generations Scott Walker on his campaign website There are two fundamental issues The first is the issue of who should be kept from having guns and using firearms A lot of them are criminals And a lot of people who are getting killed are members of gangs inside our urban areas Jim Webb on Democratic Primary Debate on Oct 13 We certainly need an assault weapons ban but we need more than that There are some 260 people every day who are injured or killed by gun violence so it s very important that we ban assault weapons for starters but there are other steps that need to be taken quickly Local communities need to be able to regulate guns as needed to deal with their violence So we need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals We need background checks so that the mentally ill are not possessing and using guns And we need to end the gun show loopholes as well because there s far too much violence from guns which is not needed Jill Stein on the expanded second Obama Romney 2012 debate I come from a state that has virtually no gun control And yet at political peril I voted for an instant background check which I want to see strengthened and

became known as Al Qaeda VERDICT True What is important to understand is we have organizations whether it is ISIS or Al Qaeda who do believe we should go back several thousand years we should make women third class citizens that we should allow children to be sexually assaulted that they are a danger to modern society Bernie Sanders on the term radical Islam According to CNN ISIS has claimed that murdering enslaving and raping women is justified by Islam The Washington Post explained that the reasoning for this is that the jihadist group says the torture of women is a long standing tradition The article continued that after women are ranked by age some younger than 13 years old and physical attributes they are distributed to men based on hierarchies Multiple reports show that although ISIS claims this is part of their religion and tradition the abuse of women is not an official part of Islamic teachings VERDICT True The blueprint in Maryland that we follow was yes we did in fact raise the sales tax by a penny And we made our public schools the best public schools in America for five years in a row with that investment And yes we did ask everyone the top 14 percent of earners in our state to pay more in their income tax And we were the only state to go four years without a penny s increase to college tuition Martin O Malley on making public college debt free According to Maryland gov during his two terms as Governor Martin O Malley created the fastest job growth in the region led Maryland public schools to number one ranking of all public schools in the country for five years in a row and helped make Maryland colleges number one in ranking for keeping tuition costs down He also made Maryland number one nationally in median income number one in Ph D scientists and researchers per capita number one in research and development and number one in women owned businesses VERDICT True There is a broad consensus 92 percent in the most recent poll of Americans want gun safety measures Hillary Clinton on gun control Gallup reported that in a poll released Oct 7 through Oct 11 about the selling of firearms 55 percent of participants wanted more strict laws 11 percent wanted less strict laws and 33 percent wanted laws to stay as they are now The poll also found that 86 percent of participants were in favor of universal background checks for gun purchases VERDICT Misleading While the majority of poll participants did show they wanted more gun safety measures it was not 92 percent This nation is the most powerful military in the world We re spending over 600 billion a year on the military And yet significantly less than 10 percent of that money is used to be fighting international terrorism Bernie Sanders on Syrian refugees org reports that for the 2015 fiscal year 598 5 billion

an annual average of 8 2 percent during Kasich s term and the enrollment rate increased by approximately 9 1 percent per year The website said that during Kasich s tenure Medicaid enrollment increased from 2 2 million to 3 million Watchdog also reported that although the job growth was significant Ohio ranked 21 st out of the 50 states for job growth from Jan 2011 to Jan 2015 VERDICT Kasich s statement about reducing Medicaid funding is false as spending and enrollment both increased His statement about job growth however is misleading Although there was reported job growth it was not as drastic and significant as he made it sound And frankly we have to stop illegal immigration It s hurting us economically It s hurting us from every standpoint It s causing tremendous difficulty with respect to drugs and what that does to many of our inner cities in particular Donald Trump on illegal immigration The American Immigration Council reported that immigrants are less likely to be criminals than native U S citizens According to their data from the 2010 American Community Survey approximately 1 6 percent of immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 are incarcerated compared to 3 3 percent of U S males of the same age group They further reported that in the 2010 Census it was cited that 2 8 percent of foreign born Mexican men between the ages of 18 and 39 were incarcerated and 1 7 percent of foreign born Guatemalan and Salvadoran men of the same demographic were incarcerated compared to the 10 7 percent of native U S men of the same demographic who were incarcerated The Council also showed that the majority of illegal immigrants are deported based on their illegal status Only 15 4 percent is for drug related cases including marijuana possession 2 7 percent is weapon related and 1 6 percent is sexual assault related This can be compared to data provided by the Bureau of Justice which shows in a 2014 report that 50 percent of federal inmates and 16 percent of state prisoners were convicted drug offenders and 53 percent of state prisoners and 7 percent of federal prisoners were convicted for violent offenses Business Insider also reported on their website that it costs approximately 23 480 to deport a single undocumented immigrant VERDICT Extremely misleading While illegal immigration does hurt the U S economically in relation to the cost of deportation the assumption that illegal immigrants are the source for crimes and drugs is false My tax plan however is the only tax plan among any of the candidates on the stage that is part of a balanced budget plan I put forward three plans that actually balance the budget over a five year period Rand Paul on the budget crisis According to U S News Rand Paul s tax plan includes replacing personal income tax with a 14 5 percent flat tax replacing corporate taxes with a 14 5

Facebook page on Feb 24 The pipeline is perfectly safe so I can t really see a good reason not to do it Ben Carson in an interview with Bloomberg on Nov 26 2014 Not only is Keystone a major job creator delays in its approval sends an unfortunate signal on multiple fronts Approving Keystone would actually drive down the price of oil and help consumers in all North American countries It should be done today Chris Christie in a policy speech in Mexico on Sept 3 2014 Well first just on Keystone pipeline perhaps the president will veto this but on what basis would he do so The American people support it by wide majorities What we are doing today is actually worse for global greenhouse gas emissions than the Keystone pipeline would be It would create jobs despite his bizarre statement that it wouldn t Two and a half years of a process that s either purposeful foot dragging or it s incompetence And the American people know that I think that the Republicans should do is soberly and systematically pass bills that make sense that have bipartisan support And Keystone XL pipeline is one of them Carly Fiorina on PBS News Hour series on May 4 Building this pipeline is essential to our national security by reducing our dependence on oil from countries that hate us Keystone represents sound environmental policy that will move the American economy in the right direction and strengthen our national security Lindsey Graham in a news release on his campaign website on Sept 22 President Obama s decision not to move forward on the Keystone pipeline is a mistake This decision offers even more appalling evidence that this administration is hopelessly rudder less in its jobs and energy policies By not acting on Keystone the president is depriving America of a means to create jobs take a step towards energy independence and bolster our national security by tapping into our energy resources and those of our friends in Canada instead of tyrannical governments Marco Rubio in a statement on Jan 18 2012 If I am elected president I will immediately approve the Keystone XL pipeline No impact on environment and lots of jobs for U S Donald Trump in an official Tweet on Aug 18 The Keystone pipeline should be an easy decision for any president an easy decision for anybody with an IQ above broccoli Mike Huckabee at a campaign stop in Iowa on May 8 As much as we need to approve the Keystone pipeline we need to think far broader than that We need to do far more Ted Cruz at the Heritage Action for America Conservative Policy Summit on Feb 10 2014 The Keystone pipeline would instantly create thousands of jobs without costing taxpayers a dime It would also strengthen our alliance with neighboring Canada and wean our energy dependence from the Middle East The Keystone pipeline is in America s best interest Rand Paul in a speech
