  • Diary of … a military brat | The Current
an active duty officer in the United States Air Force and he had just received orders to relocate to an airbase in East Anglia a region of England My parents who had both lived in England before were uninterested in living on the base so we rented and eventually bought a home in a little town called Clare Nestled in the quaint English countryside Clare was like something out of a Jane Austen novel Cottages pubs a village bakery and a butcher shop it was an entirely different world than the one I find myself in today In Clare I attended the local primary school for four years and I acquired an accent My mother started working for the Department of Defense schools which are located on Air Force bases for the children of the military personnel So when it came time for me to begin middle school my mother decided to put me in one of the department s schools After this my accent faded gradually but because I was around other American kids who also relocated to the base I went from being the American girl in Clare to the British girl overnight I had close British friends and close American friends and this often made me feel as if I were living two lives We stayed in England for 14 years and I was lucky enough to travel all over Europe during this time But being a so called military brat does have its drawbacks Even though we didn t move around as much as expected especially after my dad retired from the Air Force all of my friends tended to move every two or three years I was the constant I saw a lot of people come and go I said a lot of goodbyes I was lucky however to have a few very close British friends whom I actually plan to visit this summer after being away from them for four years I left England to come to NSU in 2011 It was my first time living in the U S and it all felt so foreign It was pretty daunting crossing an ocean to start a new life especially when my family stayed behind on the other side of the pond Whenever people talked about being homesick I felt a certain pang of resentment their families were usually just a drive away while mine were across an entire ocean But I quickly grew out of this as I began meeting others who also had families living thousands of miles away from them Looking back I realize that the distance really allowed me to grow independently and figure out who I was After living that awkward double life throughout my adolescence a fresh start in a new place gave me the opportunity to take experiences from both lives and use them shape myself into the person I want to be I think that knowing so many people from so different cultures made me a much

  • Diary of … a biology major turned artist | The Current
sent me to the Young at Art Museum when I was about six years old and ever since then I have had a love for art When I first started at NSU I registered as a biology major and graphic design minor but I was torn between art and biology I decided in my junior year that I should double major because I spent so much time on my biology degree that it d be a waste to throw it all away but as time went on I became more and more interested in my art classes rather than my biology classes One day I was in a meeting with one of my biology professors and she asked me Are you even interested in this class I said of course but with a slight doubt in my mind I later told her about how I am a double major I majored in biology because I wanted to become a veterinarian but art is my passion She told me You know it s never too late to go after your dreams That day I went home and seriously thought about my future my degree choices and what I wanted to accomplish in my life That very night I decided to drop my biology major and become a full on art major Because I simultaneously took art and biology courses the change in majors will not prevent me from gradating on time At first my mother was against my decision But eventually she noticed that the quality of my art was improving and she began encouraging me Now as an art major I can focus on improving and learning new skills that will help land me a job when I graduate Speaking of job searching I can t emphasize enough how many times I hear You re an art major Good Luck To me this statement is ignorant People who say this should take a step back and look around Just about everything is designed by an artist from the labels at grocery stores to the very shirt and shoes we all wear Do you ever stay back to watch the credits after a movie Next time check out how many different types of artists worked on the film It s not all just computer graphic artists there are scenic artists custom artists makeup artists character designers set designers graphic designers background artists visual development artists and the list goes on Designs do not just appear out of thin air Someone has to envision them and then have the skills to create them This idea brings me to my ultimate goal I want to become a visual development artist the type of artist who develops the feel and look of a film They can create anything from the characters and backgrounds to the colors lighting and props Basically these artists create the world for the movie s story to unfold in This is my ultimate dream and it is the reason why

  • Dairy of … a once-rejected student | The Current
make me a better applicant To address my lack of work experience I took the opportunity for a job that didn t seem like my biggest passion at the time That was how I went from being sports impaired to sports literate in a matter of weeks as I took on the position as sports editor for The Current The experience was and still is priceless It restored my confidence and I realized that all I was missing was a true opportunity All it took was this extra push and thousands of dollars in loans Going back to school was definitely a challenge and was also discouraging at times There were times when I asked myself What if I don t get accepted again What if I end up on the same fork in the road as last year I always found the answer to my baffling questions when I shared my frustration with my friends and family and my ever supportive boss January rolled around and I was ready to apply again I submitted my application only to find that my stress levels tripled There was nothing I could do except wait I found myself going through the infamous college waiting game as anxiety accumulated for the next few weeks On March 5 I finally received the email that read On behalf of the committee on admissions at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry I am pleased Yes That was the word I was looking for pleased I laughed and screamed and jumped and cried with tears of joy And then it occurred to me that I should probably finish reading the email It read that you have been selected to interview I was as happy as a wave dancing on the sea At this point you re probably thinking that I got accepted into optometry school and am now living a happy ending or beginning However you want to look at it But that s not quite what happened I chose the earliest available appointment date mainly because I couldn t live through the stress any longer I interviewed and learned more about the other graduate side of my school and fell in love even more with optometry Waiting to hear back after the interview was only the next level of horror A week later I received a call from an admissions counselor who nicely informed me that I was put on hold My brain was stuck on that word hold and I couldn t grasp the rest of the phone call That day felt like the end All I could think about was the curse of becoming someone without a dream someone who doesn t have an inspiring story to share with their kids someone who seems like they re giving excuses for why they didn t stick with their dream while they had the chance to All these thoughts were mixed with the remains of the reminiscent cluelessness from the previous year I decided to talk

  • Diary of … a CrossFit novice | The Current
CrossFit before but when a friend of mine didn t recommend it because it was too hard I was ironically motivated to try to it Before signing up I did what a curious newbie to any activity does Look at my Google search history and you ll find CrossFit myths Is CrossFit for everyone CrossFit injuries and most importantly Has anyone died from CrossFit I found a few negative articles online that I later discovered were actually against what CrossFit stands for These articles state that CrossFit doesn t really pay attention to your form it doesn t give you any breaks and it s simply too hardcore But on the other hand I also found brilliant success stories from many people and these did nothing but inspire me to try the program and judge it for myself To make sure I didn t chicken out at any point I signed up for a three month program I knew that this way I wasn t going to let my carefully collected pocket money go to waste It was located only a few minutes from school and I could easily go before or after classes Jan 15 exactly two months and one day ago trust me you will start to count days once you join CrossFit I attempted my first WOD the CrossFit acronym for Workout of the Day I did easier variations of most of the exercises I wasn t familiar with and with the help of a trainer I made it through alive As of now I ve been doing CrossFit for about two months and this is all I have to say it doesn t get any easier but you just learn to like it more When people say CrossFit is hard they re not lying There is a valid reason the Internet is flooded with so many CrossFit memes that make it look like a terrifying activity But trying CrossFit is a you won t understand the taste of a mango until you taste it yourself kind of situation The exhaustion after running a 5K and the soreness after a tough workout are especially worth it when you see more muscle on yourself in such a short time These are nothing but catalytic feelings that make me want to push myself further In just two months I was able to lift half my body weight and even deadlift a bit more than that amount I ve attempted and done many workouts that I never even thought I could and I m looking forward to mastering even more of them Walking while doing a hand stand I am still not able to do it but I won t say that I can t I now have the drive to say that one day I will In this short time I have seen myself grow isn t positive change what we all look for I can only imagine where it will take me in another six months let alone
