only creative outlet I found that still sticks with me today is writing I loved watching TV as a kid especially cartoons Every time I would watch an episode of my favorite shows I would think Awesome But what if it ended differently I would always think of different scenarios and send my favorite characters on new adventures After thinking up so many different possibilities and not wanting to keep them all in my head I decided to write them down I wanted to share what I d written with others but I didn t know how One day I stumbled upon a website called FanFiction net where fans of different movies shows and other works of fiction write their versions of the characters stories known as fanfics and submit them for the world to see and review I was so amazed by all of the different stories I read and it was wonderful to know that there were others like me who had the same what if this happened instead thoughts So on May 1 2006 I officially registered an account on the website and created a pen name Soon after I submitted my first fanfic a Xiaolin Showdown story I loved sharing what I wrote because it made me happy to see that others appreciated my writing and even praised me for my ideas I won t deny that I also received quite a bit of negative feedback at first I was plagued by grammatical errors and such Despite the negative reviews that sometimes made me delete some of my stories my love for writing never died I continued to write fanfics and the chapter count for each of them grew to exceed 30 chapters I even finished one at 88 chapters When I started high school I stopped limiting myself to writing only fanfics of my favorite shows and started writing other types of short stories By the time I was a senior in high school I decided that I wanted to write more often and hopefully publish a book though I don t plan to write professionally I would use aspects of my daily life and things that I saw in movies video games and books as inspiration for my writing My close group of friends in New York is my biggest inspiration Just as I would think Hey what if this happened instead whenever I would watch my favorite shows I would have that same thought whenever we would all hang out In fact one of the current books I m writing titled Team Spice is based on my friend group and the thought What if we were superheroes I want to use this book not only to show the world my creative side but also to show the love that I have for my friends As for other books and other types of stories I plan to write in the future I want whatever I write to have some sort of meaning In addition

easy the things I learned and experienced along the way have helped mold my dreams and future endeavors into something I could ve never dreamed of Dreams have always played a colossal role in my everyday life they re what convinced me every morning to get out of bed For without dreams what is there to chase As a kid my dreams consisted of 94 feet of hardwood two baskets and my childhood friend named Spalding Basketball was my life I played for a nationally ranked team and competed against a lot of guys who play in the NBA today But as you can tell from the title of this article that dream did not come to fruition But basketball taught me a lot more than what happens on the court It taught me how to be a leader Those leadership skills brought me to an internship in the financial services industry with Sagicor Life Insurance a reputable international company that has been around for over 170 years as a licensed financial advisor They presented me with an opportunity to run my own business with full financial backing and an opportunity to learn from many different successful professionals I ll never forget my first time stepping into the office and seeing all of the different awards and accolades each adviser received from being million dollar producers to getting community recognition These guys were no joke which was no help to my overwhelming nerves Jonathan London the office s career development manager gave me the opportunity to jump start my career by taking me under his wing and giving me unmatched attention and opportunities The training Jonathan gave me applies not only to the financial field but also contains many life lessons and tools to be a better person John Petrucco our branch manager has spent 20 years in the industry and started his career under Jordan Belfort better known as the Wolf of Wall Street Sagicor and John have given me the opportunity to create a business for myself but without being by myself I get all the perks of running my own business but without the risks Another opportunity this internship has provided me with is the ability to learn how to make a lot more money than any regular college student Everyone thinks life insurance is just about death but that could not be any further from the truth I ve watched client after client change their lives by properly investing their capital and developing a detailed plan on how to reach their financial goals While building my own business and learning from the best Sagicor gave me the jump start I needed to catapult myself and my financial practice Sagicor even sent me to the Revolt Music Conference in Miami where I was able to network and learn from some of the biggest names in business I will never forget being able to sit down with P Diddy and talk to him about my goals and where

land affectionately dubbed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean Most times I am met with a confused expression and a barrage of questions usually relating to Montserrat s proximity with what seems to be the best known island in the Caribbean Jamaica Rarely I get a question about Haiti instead of Jamaica Rarer still do I find someone who actually knows about Montserrat I generally find myself whipping out the now dog eared map of the Caribbean that I started to carry around with me during my freshman year and give a short geography lesson identifying other islands as I go along which have also been home at one point or another Of course it feels great to tell someone about home Who doesn t like representing the place that they are from Only for me after leaving the conversation I feel as though I have committed a crime of stealing a country and passing it off as my own A quick glance at my birth certificate would reveal I am not actually Montserratian despite what I feel inside Technically I am Crucian and I should call the beautiful tropical island of St Croix home But I moved from St Croix when I was an infant and I haven t had the opportunity to visit my birthplace since How could I identify as Crucian if I do not even know the first thing about St Croix This leads me to wonder what makes home actually home Perhaps I am wrong but I decide based on how I feel despite what my birth certificate says I am not denouncing any part of myself but if home is where the heart is Montserrat is home I have moved on average every three years Besides other factors I think my mom liked the excitement of a new job and new surroundings so it was common for us to move I have lived in St Croix Montserrat Nevis St Kitts Antigua and Florida sometimes multiple times in these places This is my second time living in Florida and although I spent many childhood summers here it still isn t home There s just something about going back to a place where people know your name and you know theirs in turn where greeting people is normal and reciprocated instead of getting strange looks and being ignored Montserrat is where I spent most of my life It is where I played barefoot and climbed trees for fun and delicious snacks while gaining my trophies which are what I call scars from rough outdoor playing Instead of shoveling snow on snow days I remember shoveling ash randomly deposited by our Soufriere Hills volcano and just as these memories bring happiness for some they do the same for me Although my passport does not read Montserratian that s who I am It is what I know and I forever carry its unique rhythm in my heart In the end home for you may not be what is

this disease At the time of my diagnosis my hemoglobin A1c level was an alarming 11 5 the average person with good control usually has a level of less than seven Hemoglobin A1c is a form of hemoglobin that is measured to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over long periods of time From that day forward all I knew were appointments with my pediatric endocrinologist every three months and blood tests to closely monitor my hemoglobin A1C levels In addition I had appointments with an ophthalmologist to prevent vision loss It took me a very long time to become adjusted to the new changes in my life and for a while I felt powerless I was immediately put on insulin treatment to control the high levels of sugar in my blood I also took nutrition classes so I could learn how to take my blood sugar with a meter give myself insulin and count carbs for every meal My diabetes sets me apart from others around me I m constantly asked questions when I m seen checking my blood sugar or adjusting carbohydrates on my insulin pump Does it hurt when you prick your finger or Is that a beeper in your pocket My life began to revolve solely around my diabetes My book bag for school contained more testing strips glucose tablets and insulin vials than actual school supplies During lunch time as my friends ate their meals I was counting carbs and administering insulin In January 2010 I was put in insulin pump therapy to help me better control and lower my hemoglobin A1c level Insulin pump therapy relieved a portion of the burden and it gave me a little bit of hope However even up to this date everything I do is centered on managing my diabetes I have to carry around my blood testing supplies and glucose pills in case of low blood sugar In addition to this eating at certain times is imperative I have to eat every four to six hours to prevent hypoglycemia and I always carry a granola bar in case I don t get the chance to have a meal on time Emotionally diabetes is debilitating From waking up with low numbers and feeling weak to headaches due to high blood glucose I feel like a prisoner inside my own body because of this disease Every day is unpredictable I never really know how I m going to feel that day due to the mood swings that blood glucose levels create There are some days when I wake up hopeful and determined and others when I just want it all to end and just live a normal life Over the past year I ve been hospitalized for episodes of extreme ketoacidosis four times Each time I was in the hospital for over three days and given doses of morphine to stop the unbearable pain in my abdomen intravenous fluids to prevent further dehydration and a strict liquid diet I ve
