  • That Time I … went to Cabo | The Current
were both desert landscapes as well as tropical ocean landscapes and the weather was perfect The temperature was in the upper 80s with a nice cool breeze since our hotel was located next to the ocean It was neither a dry heat nor a humid heat it was right in the middle which was perfect As we arrived at our hotel my jaw hit the floor because the building was absolutely breathtaking and overlooked the ocean As I looked to my left and my right I saw white sand jet skis and parasailers who were having the time of their lives At that point I knew exactly what I wanted to do during this vacation We went to our room got our bathing suits on and hit the beach The next couple of days were filled with amazing food good people and lots of adventure The second day of our vacation we woke up and walked down to the beach to rent jet skis That was the first time I had ever been on one and it was nothing but pure thrill Throughout the trip we explored the culture and got a taste of the ethnic food The food was vibrant and colorful and the smells were outrageous I was nervous about the food in Mexico since I am a very picky eater but when I ate this food I immediately fell in love with it The restaurants where we ate dinner were so authentic and filled with the Mexican culture One restaurant we went to was called Mi Casa and it had a stand in the middle of the restaurant where a woman was making homemade tortillas I ordered tamales surtidos that came in a simple platter of four tamales representing different regions of Mexico shrimp beef chicken and pork This was my first time eating tamales and it was truly amazing to be able to step foot in these restaurants and experience the little things about this country On the very last day of our stay we headed to the beach and saw a tent that offered parasail tours which is where a boat tows two people wearing a specially designed parachute canopy over the water My best friend and I knew from the beginning of our trip that we wanted to try this so on the last day that is exactly what we did We signed up for the tour and 15 minutes later we were out on a boat getting ready to take flight Both my best friend and I live for adventure and this was so spontaneous which made the experience that much better Once we were strapped in with the harness the parasail guide asked us to stand on the rear of the boat As we were standing there the boat started to move and we slowly started to float over the water It was a little scary at first but once we were all the way up the view was amazing On our

  • That Time I … rose above “Social Flexpectations” | The Current
arm and chain for control over my own body I shared this sentencing with other people seeking the same fate I was Fortunately they soon joined me on the journey to escape from the social jail we had succumbed to I had mountains of magazines with women I dreamt to look like I had the nutrition background to know what to eat and as a trainer I knew how to train my body for every inch of it As a young woman figuring out this world there was one thing I was always seeking I was looking for a life that I could live without a ball and chain attached to my leg After a series of events such as the preparation for a bikini competition food obsessions and a Photoshop class it came to my attention that perfection was not obtainable and anything close to it would be short lived or technologically created As a fitness professional it became my mission to air out the industries dirty laundry of diets obsessions and Photoshop capabilities in creating the image of fitness modeling Rawk Sport and Fitness my no Photoshop magazine and small business was created as a release of the Social Flexpectations in the fitness industry and general culture I began the magazine to give myself and the many people I have encountered a reason to question what they see on the magazines claiming to show health I wanted people to start seeing themselves as healthy beings without the approval of six pack abs or Photoshopped perfection I have come a long way since the beginning of my own journey and have met amazing souls who have helped me in spreading my mission My greatest opportunity was speaking at TEDxNSU last year My talk featured my own edited photographs and the speech of a lifetime about the experiences I have gathered in my young life so far TEDxNSU gave me the chance to spread my wings as a public speaker and gave my mission room to grow It is safe to say that both men and women are affected by this issue and need to see that it s okay to be in your own body and not what is already out there It is time for a paradigm shift in the perception of health and beauty I want to give other people a chance to get a look from the inside out and a gain a sense of pride in what each of us has to offer this crazy and beautiful world with no Photoshop required Since I graduate from NSU this semester for the next chapters of my life I plan on pursuing graduate school in sports psychology and grow Rawk Sport and Fitness as a whole bodied company I have not written my path and I can t edit it either so it looks like all of us will have to look out for the next issue of Rawk Sport and Fitness Magazine to see what else

  • That Time I … worked on Black Friday | The Current
costume Disney speak for uniform and my Mickey ears I kissed my guests who were still at my house at the time goodbye and left my house at around 10 30 p m to make my 11 30 shift I felt pretty good about myself I was put in charge of pajamas and plushes in the very back of the store familiar territory But once the clock struck midnight my confident smile faded away as a frenzied mob stampeded toward me like a pack of wildebeests My beautifully organized rack of pajamas that I spent a full half hour perfecting was torn apart within the minute as angry parents fought over Rapunzel nightgowns and matching Mickey Mouse loungewear Small children swarmed around me tossing plushes across the store like footballs with their sticky hands plushes that I carefully arranged by movie size and theme and screamed to their parents to buy them the giant Perry the Platypus I was tugged in 20 different directions to search for sizes reach unreachable items ad answer questions that I did not know the answer to I was constantly cleaning only to have my area destroyed over and over again The store was at its maximum capacity for about four hours and unfortunately for me pajamas were the hottest deal of the evening Parents lugged their screaming sleep deprived toddlers around in strollers at 3 a m through the tightly arranged aisles straight to the back of the room to yell at me whenever they couldn t find their desired sizes One mother made me get on a ladder knock down every giant stuffed Minnie Mouse on display and make a massive mess just to prove to her that they all are same exact model as the Minnie Mouse she already had in her hands By the end of my shift my eyelids were heavy my legs were tired my back was sore and my patience optimism and warm friendly attitude were completely gone I had begun lying to the customers saying that we don t have more of a particular item in the back that I didn t know the answer to their questions but other poor suffering employees did and even that the items on the top shelves aren t for sale I even had taller customers help me reach tall hard to reach places To this day I don t know why I wasn t fired on the spot After seven hours on my feet helping out hordes of people with the nastiest of attitudes I finally left the happiest store on Earth embraced the sunshine and kissed the pavement below my feet Freedom had never felt so good A week later I formally quit picked up my final check and turned in my Mickey ears never looking back at the large room filled with terrible memories While my Black Friday experience was pretty horrific I still respect the Disney Store and everything it taught me For one it taught me

  • That Time I … traveled to Sarajevo and met the man in the red beanie | The Current
And so we decided to put aside our anxieties and fears and joined him on his walk through town We followed him as he took us on a tour of a city so rich in history and culture As we walked he told us countless stories of Sarajevo and his experiences during the Bosnian genocide of the 1990s He took us to the city library that had been destroyed by a massive fire and was later rebuilt into this beautiful landmark He took us to the corner where the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated which was actually just one street down from our hotel From there we walked with him to the other side of town to the Catholic Church where he sings with the choir on Sundays to the prayer wall at a local mosque and to the brewery where he would get water for his family during the Siege of Sarajevo He told us stories of how difficult it was to get something as simple as water during the siege How you could only walk down certain streets to avoid shootings How you lived in constant fear I couldn t even fathom how that must have felt For hours we followed the man in the red beanie all across the city as he told us the stories of his past With each story I saw history come to life and my curiosity grew more and more Strolling along the river he quizzed us on Bosnian history and even a little U S history too The more time we spent with him the more this mysterious and still nameless man fascinated me As we came upon a church he began singing Hey now Hey now When the world comes in They come They come To build a wall between us We know they won t win the lyrics to Don t Dream It s Over by Crowded House In the moment I enjoyed the comforting sound of his voice as it filled the silent night with music He continued singing as we made our way to our next destination on the tour of all tours He turned what seemed to be like a dozen cobblestone street corners until he finally stopped at a marketplace But this was no ordinary market this was where the Markale massacres of 1994 occurred and it was here that we learned just how special our mysterious tour guide was He recounted the day of the first bombardment so long ago He had just walked down a block from the market when the first bomb went off With tears streaming down his face he passed his hand over the engraved names of his lost friends on the memorial wall His hand stopped over one name in particular and he told us that this man s parents were so distraught after the loss of their child and that he has to remind them that although they had lost one child they still had another a daughter

  • That Time I … Volunteered for earthquake relief in Nepal | The Current
struck Nepal Aftershocks followed the earthquake throughout Nepal with one reaching a magnitude of 6 7 the following day and another on May 12 2015 at a magnitude of 6 8 killing thousands and damaging infrastructure particularly in Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk districts in eastern Nepal The earthquake and its aftershocks affected a total of 14 districts and resulted in 8 786 deaths and 22 303 injuries While the quakes were happening I was planning a summer trip to Nepal for a project that aimed to provide training to female community health volunteers on maternal and child health but the earthquake changed my plan Once I arrived I spent a month providing disaster relief and support for Nepal s Home Ministry by collecting data about the mass casualties and relief distribution in the affected areas I worked in the Kabhrepalanchowk District and collected data in collaboration with the Nepal police the Nepal army the armed police force of Nepal and the chief district officer We reported the collected data to Home Ministry on a daily basis enabling the government to provide further relief and support as needed I had also collected funds from the International Health Initiatives friends and other sources to buy metal corrugated sheets and I distributed them to 42 families in Sindhupalchowk District and Kabhrepalanchowk District The metal corrugated sheets were used for roofing allowing families to stay inside of their houses without sleeping under the open sky Metal corrugated sheets are durable and the main objective was to keep people safe throughout the upcoming rainy season in Nepal The metal corrugated sheets were distributed to those of marginalized low socio economic status those who lost their houses and single women On top of all of my volunteering for disaster relief efforts I still had to attend my online class at 3 a m from Nepal I received support from Dr Cyril Blavo the program director of the Master of Public Health Program and my friends and coworkers at the time This help was very crucial for me in attending the class Working in emergency conditions isn t as easy as we think it is or as we read about in books particularly when you have to work on limited resources I saw people with plenty of needs hungry people homeless people and even families who lost a loved one They were suffering from mental physical and social tensions living in fear of more tremors Not only did these people lose their homes and businesses but many people also became disabled and are worried about their future 90 percent of the infrastructure in the earthquake affected areas was destroyed by the minute long tremors Now no one can imagine when the government of Nepal will rebuild its infrastructure I tried the best that I could to support the people in my country whenever possible by providing the people who require assistance with care support relief and recovery SHARE Facebook Twitter tweet Previous article Pumpkintastic Next article Race to
