    Nanjing Center JHU SAIS to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Hopkins Nanjing Center MEDIA ADVISORY April 2 2012 JHU SAIS to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Hopkins Nanjing Center Nanjing University Chancellor Hong Yinxing to Give Keynote Address Hong Yinxing professor of economics and chancellor of Nanjing University will give the keynote address at an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Hopkins Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies HNC on Monday April 9 at 4 p m The Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies SAIS administers the center s activities on behalf of Johns Hopkins University Hong will discuss Studies on the Engines of Chinese Long Term Economic Development He will give his remarks in Mandarin with simultaneous translation provided Author of numerous books and articles he was selected by The Chinese Market magazine in 2001 as one of the 25 economists who has substantial influence on China s market economy SAIS Dean Jessica P Einhorn and David M Lampton SAIS dean of faculty and director of the China Studies Program will provide opening remarks Established in 1986 the center located in Nanjing China is a post graduate educational joint venture between Johns Hopkins and Nanjing universities providing approximately 200 students from the United States and other countries and China the unique opportunity to live and study together American and international students take the majority of their classes in Mandarin while Chinese students study mostly in English SAIS also will host a live webcast of the event available at www sais jhu edu pressroom live html The event which is free and open to the public will be held in Kenney Auditorium located on the first floor of the school s Nitze Building 1740 Massachusetts Ave N W Washington D C Members of the public should RSVP to

  • Vali Nasr Named Dean of Johns Hopkins SAIS | SAIS
    special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Vali Nasr is a distinguished scholar and teacher an adept policy analyst and adviser a highly regarded public intellectual and an accomplished administrator said Ronald J Daniels president of Johns Hopkins who recommended the appointment to the executive committee of the university s board of trustees I have been as impressed with Vali s warmth and humility as with his intellect vision and accomplishments Daniels said He has an excellent understanding of the challenges facing graduate schools of international studies including SAIS and an appreciation for the opportunities ahead He is superbly qualified to meet those challenges and seize those opportunities SAIS was founded in Washington D C in 1943 to prepare students to assume major responsibility in the postwar world It became a part of Johns Hopkins in 1950 and now has additional campuses in Bologna Italy and Nanjing China Its nearly 1 000 students across the three locations benefit from the school s emphasis on diverse knowledge and skill sets in core disciplines such as strategic studies and international development international economics regional study and foreign language training Among SAIS s unique assets Nasr said are its global reputation and worldwide locations its distinguished faculty and its tradition of providing students with both the theoretical insight and practical tools they need to be leaders in the study and practice of international relations This is an important and turbulent time in global affairs Nasr said The nature and focus of education in international affairs are changing as global challenges require innovative approaches greater attention to technology and addressing new demands in the job market SAIS has a very important leadership role to play in shaping the future of education in international affairs Nasr is a leading scholar on the politics of the Middle East and the Muslim world and on foreign policy His two most recent books The Shia Revival and Forces of Fortune foresaw respectively post war sectarian violence in Iraq and the uprisings that have become known as the Arab Spring The books contributed to U S policy formulated in response to those events Nasr has advised or presented briefings to presidents and vice presidents senior cabinet secretaries of both parties congressional committees the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and other military leaders and presidential campaigns He is a columnist for Bloomberg View and has contributed to the New York Times Washington Post Foreign Policy Foreign Affairs and other publications He has been widely interviewed on Middle East issues and has appeared on CNN NBC NPR and PBS He has been a guest on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report His Twitter feed on foreign affairs issues is vali nasr At Tufts Nasr is associate director of the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies and has worked closely with the president and provost on university wide initiatives and on the university s global presence He also has collaborated with the dean and other Fletcher School leaders on strategic vision academic

    University Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies SAIS as a distinguished visiting scholar as of January 1 2012 Lipsky served from September 2006 to August 2011 as the International Monetary Fund s first deputy managing director the organization s No 2 leadership role Most recently he was a special adviser to IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde helping to direct the fund s preparations for last month s G20 Leaders Summit in Cannes To be based at SAIS s International Economics Program Lipsky will engage as an active member of the school s community of scholars through conducting research teaching and organizing special programs with policymakers and other experts John Lipsky s service at the IMF coincided with the most challenging era for the international economy in the past 70 years said SAIS Dean Jessica P Einhorn During this historic time he was a dedicated and effective advocate for international cooperation and coordination to heal and restore the global economy Over the course of his distinguished career in both the private and public sectors he has earned the respect and regard of many leaders around the world We look forward to benefitting from John s tremendous insights into today s challenging and ever evolving global economy Prior to rejoining the IMF in 2006 Lipsky spent more than 20 years in the private sector including serving as JP Morgan s chief economist Chase Manhattan Bank s chief economist and director of research and Salomon Brothers Inc s chief economist Before working on Wall Street he was at the IMF for a decade where he helped manage the fund s exchange rate surveillance procedure and analyzed developments in the international capital market His current professional activities include serving on the board of directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research A

  • JHU SAIS Receives Luce Foundation Grant to Launch Global Politics and Religion Initiative | SAIS
    an era when the resurgence of religion s influence has caught the majority of scholars and analysts by surprise Religion in many cases appears ready to displace the spread of 20th century secularizing regimes ideologies and social trends in defining national policy goals said Charles Doran director of the SAIS Global Theory and History Program and the new initiative A perfect recent example of this trend is the potent role of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt which survived decades of harsh repression while managing to remain politically relevant both by serving as a highly effective opposition to a corrupt secular regime and by joining the newly revitalized democratic platform SAIS Dean Jessica P Einhorn added This generous grant from the Luce Foundation will allow us to advance scholarly research on religion in different national contexts while preparing students to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world The first new GPRI course to be offered this semester is titled Heaven on Earth Conflict Democracy and the Growth of Religious Toleration Students will explore whether religious toleration is more likely within the framework of democracy and if democracy nurtures religious toleration Two other proposed courses will address religion and international relations and religion politics and policymaking This year SAIS will begin hosting periodic faculty and community seminars on religion and politics involving scholars from SAIS and other Johns Hopkins divisions as well as experts from area universities and the surrounding policy community in a dialogue about the role of religion in the historical and modern forms of government particularly democracies The third GPRI component will be a series of executive education training sessions targeting professionals in the U S government the military nonprofit organizations media and business The coursework will focus on how the interaction between religion and politics affects current
