  • JHU SAIS Names New American Co-Director of Hopkins-Nanjing Center | SAIS
    American Studies Established in 1986 the center located in Nanjing China is an educational joint venture between The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University providing approximately100 students from the U S and other English speaking countries and China the unique opportunity to live and study together In addition the center has the only open stacks uncensored library in China containing more than 65 000 Western and Chinese volumes SAIS administers the center s activities on behalf of JHU As the Nanjing based American co director Daly will be responsible for the management of the center s affairs with the Chinese co director as well as the administration of the newly established Hopkins Nanjing Institute for International Research and summer language program Nanjing Immersion Prior to joining the Hopkins Nanjing Center Daly most recently served as director of the U S China Housing Initiative at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and as director of the China Seminar at Syracuse University Daly s work in China began when he was posted to Beijing and Taiwan as a foreign service officer from 1986 to 1991 After his overseas tour with the U S Information Agency he taught Chinese at Cornell University and became a consultant on China affairs Daly s clients have included numerous production companies such as the Children s Television Workshop where he helped produce the Chinese versions of Sesame Street and other educational programs In addition he has worked with the National Committee on U S China relations serving as an interpreter for China s President Jiang Zemin Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi and several American leaders A native of New York Daly received his B A in literature from Syracuse University in 1984 He lectures frequently on Chinese culture and has appeared as a commentator for CNN VOA

    Bush today announced his intention to nominate Paul Wolfowitz dean of the Johns Hopkins University Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies SAIS as deputy secretary of Defense Wolfowitz has served as the dean of SAIS since 01 1994 Below is a statement from William R Brody president of The Johns Hopkins University in reaction to President Bush s announcement The bad news is that Johns Hopkins is losing a great dean The good news is that the country is getting a very smart very focused clear thinking leader as deputy secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz will serve the nation well In the seven years that Paul has been at Johns Hopkins a lot has changed It s a different world now in many respects But SAIS is ready because Paul and his faculty and staff have had the insight to discern what s important and the commitment to excellence necessary to maintain a leadership role in teaching and research Paul repositioned the school from a Cold War orientation which it had since its founding to a focus on the impact and challenges of Globalization in the post Cold War era He has strengthened the faculty grown the endowment
