  • JHU SAIS Names New American Co-Director of Hopkins-Nanjing Center | SAIS
    2014 The Johns Hopkins University Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies SAIS has named Cornelius C Kubler as the new American Co Director of the Hopkins Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies effective August 1 2014 Kubler will be responsible for the day to day management of the center s affairs along with the Chinese Co Director Prior to joining the Hopkins Nanjing Center HNC Kubler most recently served as a tenured professor of Asian Studies at Williams College one of America s finest liberal arts colleges where he has been chair of the Asian Studies and Chinese Departments for fourteen years Kubler s more than 30 years of China related experience includes serving as chair in the Department of Asian and African languages for the U S Department of State s Foreign Service Institute Co Director at the Harvard Beijing Academy at the Beijing Language and Culture University and a visiting Fulbright Professor of Chinese at the Graduate Institute of Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University Kubler received his B A in Linguistics and Chinese from Cornell University in 1972 his M A in Linguistics from Cornell in 1975 an M A in Chinese Literature from National Taiwan University in 1978 and a Ph D in Linguistics from Cornell University in 1981 Established in 1986 the center located in Nanjing China is a graduate educational joint venture between The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University providing approximately 200 students from the United States China and many other countries the unique opportunity to live and study together American and international students take the majority of their classes in Mandarin while Chinese students study mostly in English In addition the center has the only open stacks uncensored library in China featuring more than 120

    War Armistice UPDATED July 25 2013 The Johns Hopkins University Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies SAIS will host a forum Honoring Six Decades of Service Commemorating the 60 th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice on Thursday July 25 at 1 30 p m at the U S Capitol Visitor Center This event hosted by the U S Korea Institute at SAIS USKI will feature a keynote address by Korean War veteran Charles Rangel Democratic congressman from New York who served in the U S Army s 503 rd Field Artillery Battalion A statement from Korean War veteran Maurice R Hank Greenberg chairman and CEO of C V Starr Co Inc also will be read Other featured speakers include John Warner former Republican senator from Virginia who served in the U S Marine Corps during the Korean War John Conyers Democratic congressman from Michigan who served in the U S Army during the Korean War Gen Walter Sharp former commander of the Republic of Korea U S Combined Forces Command and U S Forces Korea for the U S Army 2008 to 2011 Kim Jung hoon Republic of Korea National Assembly representative and special envoy to the 60 th Anniversary Korean War Commemoration Kevin Yoder Republican congressman from Kansas Ray Kapaun nephew of Father Emil J Kapaun a U S Army chaplain who died as a POW in the Korean War and a posthumous recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor Eleanor Porter a lieutenant who served in the U S Army Women s Medical Specialists Corps at Brook Army Hospital in Texas during the Korean War The event which is free and open to the public will be held in Room HVC 201 of the U S Capitol Visitor Center located at First Street and East

  • Former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Stephen Bosworth Named Chairman of the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS | SAIS
    SAIS as the new chairman of the U S Korea Institute USKI at SAIS effective July 1 Bosworth recently retired as dean of Tufts University s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy a position he assumed in 2001 after a long and distinguished career in the U S Department of State Ambassador Bosworth is one of America s most distinguished diplomats with deep knowledge of Korea its global role and regional interests He will be a valuable addition to SAIS s Korean Studies Program and the U S Korea Institute s critical work on Korea and Asia said SAIS Dean Vali Nasr During his 30 years in the foreign service Bosworth served as U S ambassador to Tunisia the Philippines and the Republic of Korea as well as director of Policy Planning at the State Department After leaving the government Bosworth was president of the United States Japan Foundation from 1987 to 1995 and the executive director of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization from 1995 to 1997 He also served as the U S Special Representative for North Korea Policy for the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011 He has authored numerous articles and studies on public policy and international affairs In 2006 he co authored with Morton Abramowitz Chasing the Sun Rethinking East Asian Policy As USKI s new chairman Bosworth succeeds Don Oberdorfer the founder of the institute who will become chairman emeritus The U S Korea Institute at SAIS works to increase information and understanding of Korea and Korean affairs USKI s efforts combine innovative research with a repertoire of outreach activities and events that encourage the broadest possible debate and dialogue among scholars policymakers students NGO and business leaders and all those with an interest in the Korean peninsula USKI also sponsors the Korea Studies
