  • TESL/TEFL Certificate Curriculum and Information | Teacher Training | American Language Institute (ALI) | SDSU
    Teaching Business English This module provides TESL TEFL Certificate participants with a basic overview of the methodology they need to teach English for business which will open up additional work opportunities for them Teaching Young Learners This module provides trainees with useful techniques including songs games kinesthetics and TPR Total Physical Response that will enable them to work more effectively with children The ability to teach young learners will increase one s job prospects Classroom Management Trainees will be prepared to manage and to control classes with large numbers of students and the module will provide trainees with specific techniques for managing student behavior in a variety of settings Job hunting and Working Abroad This special seminar taught by instructors who have worked in many countries and who specialize in the topic is a detailed introduction to looking for and finding a good position at a reputable school creating a CV resume adjusting to life abroad and succeeding both in and out of the classroom The seminar includes information about specific countries and information on resources for new job seekers Cross cultural Adjustment Ranging from general topics to specific cultural practices this seminar will provide trainees with an overview of cultural differences and how they affect a teacher living abroad as well as with information and resources for specific countries Developing and Using Games in EFL Classrooms Games are an important teaching tool and can be used with all levels and ages of students TESL TEFL Certificate trainees will be shown how to develop and use their own games and will also be given games ready for use Kinesthetics in EFL Kinesthetics incorporating body movement and the use of the tactile sense in learning is a crucial and often underutilized technique in language teaching This class will demonstrate the use of kinesthetics in the EFL ESL classroom in a variety of interactive exercises English Grammar This 10 hour module which includes an entrance and exit test is a comprehensive overview of American Standard English grammar including verb tenses and moods parts of speech and specialized terms A working knowledge of English grammar is essential for success as a teacher in foreign countries top Job Placement Assistance Graduates have received jobs in China Korea Taiwan Thailand Vietnam Chile Brazil Costa Rica Saudi Arabia and many other countries After graduating from the American Language Institute s TESL TEFL Certificate Program you will have job opportunities worldwide Over the course of nearly three decades SDSU s American Language Institute has steadily built its reputation around the world as a premier site for English language instruction and teacher training Since its inception in 1974 the ALI has developed strong relationships with universities private schools ministries of education in many countries and multinational companies These resources and contacts will provide TESL TEFL Certificate graduates with enhanced marketability at schools universities companies and language centers around the world all eager to hire teachers with top qualifications The ALI will provide job placement assistance for all graduates

    States Japan Korea Mexico and Jordan Jason Greeno TESL TEFL Certificate Trainer Jason Greeno has an M A in cross cultural education with an emphasis in linguistics He has taught ESL at several different Korean universities middle schools elementary schools for the San Diego Community College District and at the ALI at SDSU since 1997 He also received his Cross cultural Language Acquisition and Development Certificate from the California State Board of Education in 2000 In 2001 he had the opportunity to visit a middle school in Shanghai China where he met with students parents and teachers and explained the various ESL programs at the ALI Adept at teaching in many skill areas he most enjoys teaching pronunciation and reading He believes that employing a communicative and kinesthetic approach in the classroom allows students to get the most out of a lesson Marc Tannenhaus TESL TEFL Certificate Trainer Marc Tannenhaus has an M A in TESOL and has taught ESL EFL for over 30 years including teaching abroad in Colombia Ecuador and Spain He has also been the student relations advisor for international students at SDSU s American Language Institute Margit Dupree TESL TEFL Certificate Trainer Margit Dupree has a B A in French and an M A in applied linguistics and has been teaching at the ALI as well as training native and nonnative teachers of ESL EFL since 1993 In addition to teaching English she is the structure core teacher and testing and placement coordinator in the ALI s Intensive English Communication IEC program Involved in teacher training since 1995 she has presented on such topics as using videos and graded readers in ESL and EFL classes as well as grammar terminology and error correction Bob Stipp TESL TEFL Certificate Trainer Bob Stipp has taught English to speakers of other languages and trained teachers for over 30 years He has taught in two foreign countries as well as in the United States His experience ranges from teaching junior high school high school junior college adult school and university levels He has been a teacher at the ALI since the fall of 1976 In addition to coordinating several short term programs he has served for the IEC program as student relations coordinator testing coordinator and writing classes core teacher He has taught all levels as well as diverse subjects and has been involved in teacher training and materials development He received his B A from San Diego State University in creative writing and he received his M A in TESOL education from Temple University Japan Barbara Bass TESL TEFL Certificate Trainer Barbara Bass has an M A in Applied Linguistics form San Diego State University She has worked as an instructor at the ALI since 2006 and is currently the Coordinator of the Fulbright Preacademic Program as well as the TOEFL IELTS coordinator and the grammar core mentor She teaches multiple subjects in several of the ALI s programs grammar and reading in IEC Intensive English for Communication GMAT
