her mind and she says it illustrates why people love working at the ALI and love attending classes here It was a very hot day in August A student from Indonesia with little English speaking skills wandered into the ALI office He had walked to campus with his suitcase from El Cajon Boulevard which is about a mile away from campus He had no idea what to do One of the staff helped him and got him settled into housing and took him to classes That student ended up earning his MBA at SDSU and moved on to a successful career Those stories are plentiful here It s a joy seeing a student come here with no experience with our culture or language and finishing our program and flourishing using the skills and knowledge that they learned here at the ALI It truly is amazing watching students journeys to success Cindy does have a few parting thoughts for students who are thinking about enrolling in the ALI The staff at the ALI makes it a great setting here They love their jobs and it shows And I tell students This is where you want to come to study however don t forget to complete your paperwork especially if you need help finding housing and apply early Tags ali sdsu Cindy Kistelely Comments Closed Comments are closed You will not be able to post a comment in this post ALI Program Blogs Semester SDSU Posts English for Academic Purposes Posts Intensive English for Communication Posts Business English for Global Practices Posts Social Entrepreneurship Posts Student Profiles ALI Student Profile Sofia Rodriguez 11 February 2015 11 54 PM No Comments Read More ALI Student Profile Tomomi Aoki 30 October 2014 4 38 PM No Comments Read More ALI Student Profile Valeria Garcia

  • ALI Instructor – Barbara Bass – Fulbright Preacademic Program Coordinator (Instructor, TOEFL/IELTS coordinator)
shows them how American universities work and we also get them through their initial difficult moments that foreign students go through experiencing a new country and culture says Barbara She considers herself the Fulbrighters mother during their stay in San Diego I am there for them in any way they need me I take them to the doctor I hold their hands And I also find lost luggage Students in the Fulbright program are accomplished in their home country and represent our diverse world Bass says We want them to put all preconceived beliefs aside and learn from each other For example it s leaving politics behind and functioning as one group I look at what Senator Fulbright set out to accomplish with this program and I see that he achieved it During their stay the students become a family and many students return to San Diego after their study at their Fulbright university to revisit the city that welcomed them to America Students form an incredible bond in the three weeks that they are here and never forget San Diego says Barbara The students stay at Studio 819 in Hillcrest and this adds another factor to the program Well it s great that they stay in Hillcrest It s a walkable neighborhood it has many shops international restaurants grocery stores and it s also a very diverse neighborhood They get exposed to lots of different things The goal is that after completion of the Fulbright Preacademic Program the students have an accurate view of what life is really like in America since most experiences of America for these students is through the television and movies and Barbara is an integral part of their first experiences She concludes There is so much give and take in this program We want

  • ALI Staff – Emily Miller – Student Customer Service
American students because the ALI is on SDSU s campus In Miller s opinion she recommends that students join clubs on campus to engage with American students as well as find people that have similar cultural values as them to feel more at home She also advises that students partake in as many activities as possible There are so many chances for students to really make this an experience she says Go on all the activities join the campus clubs go to a baseball game and do everything that you can while you are here It helps with your language skills and it also gives you a well rounded experience What Miller enjoys the most is seeing the students grow academically and professionally at the ALI For instance she knew one international student who came to the ALI not knowing much English Then just recently she saw him helping translate for a new student who had just come to the ALI I think that is what sets us apart from other schools she says We really care about them and they are just not bodies in a classroom we care about how they are doing and want them to succeed Tags American Language Institute Emily Miller SDSU Comments Closed Comments are closed You will not be able to post a comment in this post ALI Program Blogs Semester SDSU Posts English for Academic Purposes Posts Intensive English for Communication Posts Business English for Global Practices Posts Social Entrepreneurship Posts Student Profiles ALI Student Profile Sofia Rodriguez 11 February 2015 11 54 PM No Comments Read More ALI Student Profile Tomomi Aoki 30 October 2014 4 38 PM No Comments Read More ALI Student Profile Valeria Garcia Alvarez 21 July 2014 3 42 PM No Comments Read More ALI Student Finds
