    days and includes two live streaming sessions with either Wood orHarris The need for a course that gives special attention to men of color is evident through data about the success rate of black Latino Southeast Asian Pacific Islander and Native American male students at community colleges For example research Harris and Wood conducted last year with SDSU student Soua Xiong shows that only 17 percent of black men and 15 percent of Latino men will earn a certificate degree or transfer to a four year college within three years atcommunity college In comparison 27 percent of white male students will reach those goals withinthe same time Harris and Wood said men of color face particular challenges in community colleges a population that overall includes older students who may be returning to school and have limitedresources As people of color the students statistically are more likely to have stressful events in their lives such as a divorce or breakup incarceration or eviction the professorssaid Harris said those events coupled with gender socialization issues such as the view of school as a feminine space mean men of color face a multitude of specialchallenges The professors said much of their program focuses on helping teachers recognize their own biasesand attitudes It s not on the students but on the educators to see them in a positive light Harris said According to data the professors cite from the Community College Survey of Men 21 percent of black men and 23 percent of Southeast Asian men believe faculty members hold negative stereotypes againstthem In their lesson plan the professors tell teachers to validate men of color in class by saying encouraging things but warn against attempts at compliments that are actually insults such as telling a black student thathe sounds articulate Other strategies include
