    and economic competitiveness Applicants must demonstrate how their study programs and future goals are connected to national security thus defined Program Description NSEP Boren supplements each Fellow s graduate degree program with language intensives in the U S and if the Fellow s proposal includes this languge and area studies in abroad In this way Fellows develop or increase competency in their chosen language s and gain experience and disciplinary knowledge in the foreign country where they study Supported Languages Destination Countries and Fields Program supports study and research in Africa Asia Central and Eastern Europe Eurasia Latin American and the Middle East Excluded from the program are Canada Australia New Zealand and the countries of Western Europe The Fellowship supports study of less commonly taught languages including but not limited to Arabic Chinese Korean Portuguese Russian and African Indic Iranian and Turkic family languages Study of Spanish or French is only permissible at an advanced level of competency In such cases coursework should focus on academic subjects rather than language acquisition Applications will also be considered at intermediate levels of Spanish and French from students in the sciences technology engineering and mathematics For a complete list of languages see Boren Fellowship What Languages Can I Study Supported Fields Supported fields are agricultural and food sciences area studies business and economics computer and information systems foreign languages health and biomedical science history international relations law mathematics sciences and engineering political science and policy studies Benefits The Program provides up to 30 000 for overseas or domestic study or a combination of both for a minimum of 1 semester and a maximum of 2 years Actual funding level is determined by Fellow s project budget and project length Boren Fellows must remain enrolled in their graduate programs for the entire fellowship

    its Summer Workshop and Associate Program IRT supports outstanding students during the graduate school application process who are committed to addressing the critical underrepresentation of minority groups on school and college faculties Program Description THE INTERN SUMMER WORKSHOP Each year 25 30 interns are selected by the IRT to participate in an intense four week summer workshop at Phillips Academy prior to or at the completion of their senior year of undergraduate study The workshop typically runs for the month of July interns and faculty work together nine hours each day six days a week Included in the workshop are lectures seminar discussions small group meetings writing conferences films debates practice teaching sessions and presentations by nationally known educators scholars poets and artists During the Summer Workshop IRT interns engage a graduate level curriculum of critical cultural and educational theory Students prepare for the GRE and work on their statements of purpose At the end of the third week in July the IRT hosts its annual Recruiters Weekend attended by more than 60 academic deans and graduate admissions representatives from consortium institutions who are eager to speak with potential candidates about their graduate programs THE ASSOCIATE PROGRAM The Associate Program is geared toward rising seniors and recent college graduates who are engaged during the summer in study abroad activities or research and thus unable to attend the Intern Summer Workshop Benefits INTERN SUMMER PROGRAM Participants receive a 1 200 stipend travel expenses if traveling by plane or train and room and board INTERN SUMMER PROGRAM AND ASSOCIATE PROGRAM Participants in both programs are sponsored by the IRT as they apply to graduate schools in a consortium of 41 universities For a list of consortium schools see http www andover edu SummerSessionOutreach IFROTeachers ConsortiumCommitment Pages default aspx Most graduate application fees
