    believe that SF State was a part of my destiny My mother attended SF State when she was pregnant with me the first signs of her contractions happened while she was studying in the Student Union now called the Cesar Chavez Student Center As an infant I attended classes with her as she completed her B A Two decades later I returned as a student and have added to a growing legacy of my family that has graduated from SF State I guess you could say it s a family affair Favorite place to spend time on campus The Cesar Chavez Student Center is the center for student life on our campus I frequent these facilities for studying eating resting socializing business recreation everything really If you could meet anyone living or dead who would he she be My paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young If Icould meet anyone it would be him Knowing first hand the stories of our predecessors is vital to understanding who we are today Latest accomplishment I have recently been accepted as a congressional intern for the Panette InternshipProgram in Washington D C I am dedicated to making the most of this tremendous opportunity Advice to new students Make the most out of your college experience by trying new things It s important to stay focused on your education in the classroom but this campus offers so many more opportunities to learn about the world as you interact with the student body Do your best to not leave any stone on this campus unturned Often it s not until you leave a place that you realize how much you left behind Favorite SF State faculty members I would have to say the two Dans in Asian American Studies Dan Begonia and Dan

    he s got a way of simplifying a complex subject like statistics and helping you grasp it He gives each individual classmate undivided attention and makes himself available He s the type of person where you don t even have to be in his class and you can still come to him for advice Favorite on campus hangout The sociology lab in the HSS building A lot of my peers and I work together there I get a lot of information that I might have missed in class I can interpret better hearing it from a peer s perspective and I can always go back to Chris for confirmation Favorite off campus hangout Between going to school and being a full time single parent the time when I m not dedicated with my studies I spend with my son trying to get him involved with community activities like the Y I m also interning for a substance abuse program East Oakland Recovery We deal with low income families or people who were referred to from the court such as first time drug offenders What person dead or living would you most like to meet Coming from a sociological perspective I would say a person like George Jackson From my personal perspective Tyra Banks In five years you ll be I see myself with a master s degree in rehab counseling facilitating or assistant directing if not directing a program that deals with people with substance abuse issues However not just strictly with that I want to cater to people with different barriers and disabilities to cross those barriers and communicate with people with hearing impairment or seeing disabilities And hopefully by then working on my doctorate What is the most important issue facing college students today Financial aid Nearly everyone

    key Mac and pressing or Website Feedback Email prospect sfsu edu Last Update 12 3 2009 Visit SF State Word on the Street Robert M Hawkins Name Robert M Hawkins Title BA English Literature Hometown Union City CA Why SF State It has a great English Department a phenomenal speech and debate program and is in a great city Also this school is just far enough away from home that I don t feel smothered but also close enough that I can come home when I need to Your plans after graduation I am planning a career as a high school English teacher There is an achievement gap with African American students that I would like to help close Also there aren t too many African American male English teachers in general I want to break boundaries and go where I am needed I plan to become a full time teacher and speech and debate coach for the largest team in the nation at James Logan High in Union City I also plan to complete graduate work in speech communication Favorite class so far First and foremost Professor Michael Krasny s course Contemporary Literature 1960 to the Present has been my favorite because it focuses on a breadth of authors whose contributions to their genres has likely had an impact on every reader s life Professor Krasny s lectures are energetic interesting and clever day in and day out There s never a dull moment Extracurricular activities I am an active member of the speech and debate program Last year I placed fifth in the nation and I hope to surpass my achievements from last year this season The speech and debate program at State is easily the best in Northern California and one of the most open minded programs
