    Download Gallery Brochure Join us this year for a sensational series of student alumni and faculty exhibitions and see what makes Sheridan s Faculty of Animation Arts Design such a unique artistic environment Sheridan s Gallery is an exhibition space that showcases emerging student artists and helps bring to life Sheridan s innovative and energetic arts community As well as encouraging cross disciplinary creativity the Gallery highlights curriculum based student work and supports a variety of exhibition related learning experiences The Gallery reinforces the relationship between learning institute industry and community The Gallery mandate is to educate surprise and expose students and visitors to art and design while reflecting a variety of ideas cultures and media Plan to attend opening receptions for the exhibitions They provide an opportunity to meet Sheridan students up and coming artists and our talented and dedicated staff and faculty All exhibitions installed and designed by Jamie Owen Gallery Installation Designer Cross Border Conversations August 31st September 18th 2015 A collaborative exhibition of selected works by students from Sheridan College Bachelor of Craft and Design Ceramics and Temple University Tyler School of Art Philadelphia PA Sheridan Creative Campus TypeForming Carl Dair September 21st October 9th 2015 The exhibit provides background on the life and accomplishments of Carl Dair Canadian graphic designer type designer writer and teacher who created Canada s first Latin alphabet typeface in 1967 The exhibit accompanies the premiere at Sheridan on Sept 21 2015 of an important film for type designers typographers and educators in Canada and abroad Carl Dair at Enschedé the last days of metal type is a rare look at the techniques of metal type making and type form and explores the significance of understanding the old ways for students and type designers today The film will be on view at the exhibit Higher Degrees of Investigation October 16th 30th 2015 An exhibition celebrating the faculty in Animation Arts and Design who are recent graduates of Master s programs or sabbatical participants Project Project November 6th 20th 2015 Project Projec t is an exhibition of studio work by first and second year Art and Art History students The display showcases six sub disciplines Painting Drawing Photo Print Media Sculpture and Design in response to specific class projects For many students this will be their first time showing in a curated exhibition Visual and Creative Arts Faculty Exhibition November 27th December 11th 2015 See the eclectic range of work on display by Visual and Creative Arts Program faculty who are practicing contemporary artists designers and sculptors Textile Studio Exhibition January 15th 29th 2016 This exhibition presents an overview of diverse student work from the Textiles Studio Work includes dye and print processes sculptural form embellishment interlaced work surface design and digitally printed designs Glass Inside Out February 5th 19th 2016 This exhibition presents a broad overview of intriguing and surprising objects made by students from the Glass Studio Bachelor of Photography Exhibition February 26th March 11th 2016 A selected collection of

    Students International Students Continuing Education Students Parents Alumni Donors Employers Home Academics Welcome to Our Faculties Faculty of Animation Arts Design Faculty Staff Profiles John C Armstrong Faculty Staff Profiles John C Armstrong Coordinator Art Art History Program Area Visual and Performing Arts Email john armstrong sheridancollege ca Contact Info Ext 2580 Credentials John Armstrong holds an M A from Chelsea School of Art London UK and a B F A from Mount Allison University Sackville NB Courses Taught Painting 3 Painting 4 Research Interests In my painted montages I combine sign painted text copied or invented illustrations and straight ahead observational still life painting I borrow from overlapping traditions of painting as both a commercial and fine art medium and I think of these varied approaches to painting as separate languages with often conflicting aims The motifs I choose are largely drawn from material that is either contemporary or from the last half century or so and are associated with everyday living and advertising My print sources are posters magazines and product packaging and I paint directly from objects that I have purchased or found such as cut flowers drinking glasses and cleaning products I place the images and text on either painterly abstract grounds or on a number of other surfaces and objects to further extend their poetic or editorial direction Teaching Interests In our four years of painting courses which is the area I teach in students are introduced to painting techniques and media as well as to a diverse range of historical and contemporary artists practices Students are encouraged to develop an area of personal artistic research informed both by their own enthusiasms and interests as well as by their understanding of the works of other artists In years two three and four the students artworks are discussed on an on going basis in class critiques where students and the instructor share the responsibility for developing a community of open and constructive debate Although the most obvious benefit of the critique is the response the student receives from others of equal importance is the experience gained through editing and criticizing the work of the other participants My hope is that graduates will make sophisticated and highly personal paintings as well as have a sense of how their paintings as vehicles of communication may be interpreted Biography John Armstrong began exhibiting his paintings in 1980 in the UK in 1982 he returned to Canada and exhibited his work in Toronto galleries such as YYZ and Cold City as well as nationally and internationally In 2003 04 his work was included in The Ironic Turn a survey of contemporary Canadian art that originated at the Kunsthalle Erfurt Erfurt Germany and travelled to the following locations Faux Mouvement Metz France Owens Art Gallery Sackville New Brunswick and the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art Toronto A 1998 survey exhibition of his artwork from the 1990s titled Sanguine was organized by Cambridge Galleries and toured to several Canadian destinations In 1999
