    Students Current Students Alumni Friends Employers Faculty Breadcrumb Navigation Home Our People Faculty Law Faculty Heidi Ramos Zimmerman Share this page Heidi Ramos Zimmerman Assistant Clinical Professor Office Lesar Law Building Room 177C Phone 618 536 8321 e mail hramos siu edu Heidi Ramos Zimmerman got both her undergraduate and graduate degree from Southern Illinois University She received her B A in Political Science in 1985 and her J D in 1988 Heidi comes to the Law School with an extensive criminal law background She worked for 16 years as Assistant Public Defender in Jackson County Illinois handling misdemeanor felony and juvenile cases She also worked as a methamphetamine prosecutor for both Union and Jackson counties in Illinois This is the second time Heidi has been employed by the SIU School of Law From 2005 2008 she worked as a staff attorney with the Civil Practice Clinic and as Project Coordinator for the Self Help Legal Center She returned to the School of Law in 2009 and is currently working as an Assistant Clinical Professor Heidi is affiliated with the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Language Access and the Illinois State Bar Committee for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and

    a member of the SIU law faculty since 1982 He grew up in Carbondale Illinois graduated from Princeton University in 1969 magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa and graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1974 cum laude and Order of the Coif He then clerked for Justice James Cobey of the California Court of Appeals and was in private practice for seven years at O Melveny and Myers in Los Angeles While there he worked primarily on antitrust and commercial fraud cases He also had the honor of trying a case for King Vidor one Hollywood s most famous old time film directors Professor Beyler teaches Civil Procedure Federal Courts and Conflict of Laws He has a special interest in personal jurisdiction having published articles on the subject one of which led to a revision of the Illinois personal jurisdiction statute Professor Beyler has been very active in service to the Illinois legal profession He was on the Illinois State Bar Association Civil Practice and Procedure Section Council for eight years serving as Chair in 1989 he then was on the editorial board of the Illinois Bar Journal for four years serving as Editor in Chief in 1992 93 and he served as reporter for the biannual Allerton House Conferences from 1984 to 1992 In 1995 the Illinois Supreme Court appointed him as the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee s Professor Reporter serving as an advisor and drafter in making revisions to the Illinois Supreme Court Rules On the local level he served for many years as secretary to the Southern Illinois American Inn of Court Professor Beyler is active in community service For more than a decade he served as an officer or director of Green Earth Inc a local land trust dedicated to the

    Assistant Professor of Law Office Lesar Law Building Room 214 Phone 618 536 8325 e mail apardieck siu edu Professor Pardieck graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and the Indiana University School of Law Bloomington While in law school he served as articles editor on the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies and following law school enrolled in the University of Hokkaido School of Law He completed his doctorate degree in law at Hokkaido where he wrote his dissertation in Japanese on Japanese and U S securities law After graduate school Professor Pardieck practiced in Indiana and then Tokyo His practice in Indiana focused on complex civil litigation primarily products liability In Tokyo he worked as General Counsel for Temple University Japan Campus with varied responsibilities including compliance with corporate education and employment law negotiating and drafting contracts and risk management Prior to joining the faculty at SIU Professor Pardieck taught as an Assistant Professor of Law for the Temple University Beasley School of Law at its Japan Campus He also has taught as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Washington School of Law Seattle and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Law Bloomington

    as a Senior Editor of the BYU Journal of Public Law and Student Director of the Immigration Clinic She also worked for the Utah Attorney General Legal Aid of Northwestern Missouri and a Provo Utah firm Howard Lewis and Peterson where Chris worked too She is most proud that two children were born during this time Cara Helena 1992 before fall finals 2nd year and Jacob Wayne 1994 before spring finals 3rd year Despite the distractions she earned her J D and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the J Reuben Clark School of Law BYU 1994 She took and passed and remains a member of the Missouri Bar never again returning to Missouri to practice She vows her tombstone will read Why did I take the Mo Bar She continued to work for the Provo firm until Chris graduated Law School in 1995 also Magna Cum Laude but with a slightly higher GPA as he will remind her from time to time His acceptance into the JAG Corps moved them to Virginia and then upstate New York and allowed Valery to be a stay at home Mom While in Watertown New York Valery served as a pro bono Tax Advisor at the Fort Drum Tax Clinic and as the Relief Society President of her church s women s organization She also became a mother to Joseph Val 1996 and twins Megan June and Bonnie Rose 1998 The family was moved to Fort Drum Kansas There Valery continued to served in her church and became a Brownie Scout Leader She also worked with an immigration attorney in Topeka helping many to become permanent residents through amnesty Samuel Christopher was born in 2006 shortly before the Behans came to SIU Here in Southern Illinois Valery has continued with her volunteer work with

    Wales At SIU Professor Buys is the faculty advisor to the International Law Society and directs the Immigration Detention Project She also has led a summer study abroad program in Ireland and Wales and a Legal Globalization class in Cuba Her professional affiliations include leadership positions with the International Law Section of the American Association of Law Schools the American Society of International Law the Central States Law Schools Association the International and Immigration Law Section of the Illnois State Bar Association ISBA and the United Nations Association Association Southern Illinois Chapter She also has been co editor of the American Bar Association International Law Year in Review and co editor of The Catalyst the newsletter of the Women and the Law Section Council of the ISBA Professor Buys also serves as a panelist for NAFTA Chapter 19 disputes Prior to coming to the SIU School of Law Professor Buys spent ten years in public and private practice in Washington D C Professor Buys was an attorney with the U S Department of Commerce where she advised the Import Administration in connection with its implementation and enforcement of U S antidumping and countervailing duty laws In that capacity Professor Buys defended the agency s decisions before the Court of International Trade the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and World Trade Organization panels Prior to that Professor Buys was in private practice with a Washington D C law firm that specialized in representing multinational ocean common carriers Professor Buys has an LL M with distinction from Georgetown University School of Law in International and Comparative Law where she earned the Chetwood Prize for the Most Outstanding Academic Performance She also holds a J D degree and an M A in International Relations from Syracuse University Professor Buys obtained her

    Home Our People Faculty Law Faculty Steven J Macias Share this page Steven J Macias Assistant Professor of Law Office Lesar Law Building Room 234 Phone 618 536 8464 e mail smacias siu edu Prior to arriving at SIU in 2011 Steven Macias held visiting appointments at the University of Oregon School of Law and California Western School of Law in San Diego He has taught a variety of public law courses including Federal Courts and Remedies and currently teaches courses in Legislation Constitutional Law First Amendment Privacy and Legal History Professor Macias received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and graduate degrees in law and history from the University of California Berkeley He also studied law in the UK at University College London where he received his LL M in Legal Theory and History Professor Macias s primary research centers on the history of legal thought in the early American republic His book manuscript Legal Science in the Early Republic The Origins of American Legal Thought and Education will be published by Lexington Rowman Littlefield Future historical research will extend to an examination of legal thought in the second half of the nineteenth century Additionally Professor Macias also researches
