    mschultz siu edu Professor Mark F Schultz joined the faculty in 2003 He teaches and writes primarily in the area of intellectual property Professor Schultz is a frequent author and speaker known for his work on the intersection of copyright and social norms Among the awards and recognition he has received for his scholarship was the law school s Outstanding Scholar of the Year award in 2008 Recently published papers have discussed the viability of free business models in the music industry and the promotion of creative industries as a grass roots development strategy for poor countries He has taught the intellectual property survey class copyright law trademarks and unfair competition cyberlaw seminars on the law and business of the music industry and international intellectual property policy and development and legal ethics Professor Schultz was a visiting professor at DePaul University College of Law during the 2007 08 academic year Professor Schultz received his J D with honors in 1993 from the George Washington University School of Law and his B A in International Economics from the George Washington University in 1989 He was a judicial clerk for the Hon Daniel M Friedman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington D C and the Hon Eric G Bruggink of the United States Court of Federal Claims Before joining the faculty he practiced law in Chicago Illinois for eight years doing transactional work for high tech companies and litigating trademark copyright and Internet cases He is active in leadership roles in local and national organizations serving as Chair Elect of the American Association of Law Schools Section on Law and Computers and as an officer and board member for several other professional and public policy organizations For the past several years he has served as

    and MLS students and dual degree students in the SIU JD MD and JD MSW programs In 2015 2016 she will serve as a trainer for the SIU School of Social Work Trauma Based Behavioral Health Fellowship program Her teaching and research interests focus on health law and policy including the intersection of public health law and criminal law She formerly served as a clinical professor at North Carolina Central University School of Law where she developed the law school s first Domestic Violence Clinic and then served for several years as the legal director for the nationally recognized Center for Child and Family Health in Durham North Carolina The Center for Child and Family Health is a medico legal consortium of faculty and staff from Duke University University of North Carolina Chapel Hill North Carolina Central University and the nonprofit Child and Parent Support Services addressing abuse prevention and treatment of child traumatic stress Prior to entering academia Professor Brobst was a child forensic interviewer at a nationally accredited child advocacy center and an assistant prosecuting attorney in South Bend Indiana She also served as the first training institute director of the statewide nonprofit North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault which provided interdisciplinary training legal and legislative monitoring and amicus brief support Professor Brobst is the first attorney in her family and a strong advocate for opportunity and well being in legal education and the legal profession She currently serves as a member of the Executive Board of the Balance in Legal Education Section of the Association of American Law Schools She also is a member of the National Crime Victim Law Institute Advisory Council Her previous leadership positions have included appointments and service on the National Child Traumatic Stress Network Justice Consortium North Carolina Commission on Mental Health

    States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee the United States Sentencing Commission and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia Prior to joining the SIU School of Law Professor Dervan served as a law clerk to the Honorable Phyllis A Kravitch of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit He also spent six years in private practice with King and Spalding LLP and Ford and Harrison LLP At King and Spalding LLP Professor Dervan was a member of the Special Matters and Government Investigations team The Special Matters team was established by former United States Attorney General Griffin B Bell in 1989 to represent corporations and individuals in complex federal and state criminal investigations internal investigations and Congressional investigations as well as in related civil and regulatory proceedings As a member of the Special Matters team Professor Dervan launched corporate internal investigations and compliance reviews represented corporations during government investigations prepared for trials of corporations and individuals and handled various types of complex criminal and civil litigation including qui tam whistleblower actions Professor Dervan s notable cases have included Representing an international soft drink company during a Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission investigation regarding allegations by a former employee Representing a national data aggregation company in response to federal and multi state attorneys general investigations of an information security breach Representing the audit committee of a national healthcare services company during an internal investigation of accounting practices Representing an international insurance claims management company during a Department of Justice criminal and civil investigation including structuring a favorable corporate plea agreement Professor Dervan attended Emory University School of Law where he was an Emory Scholar served as an Articles Editor for the Emory Law Journal and was elected a member of the Order of the

    Shawn Grindstaff Adjunct Professor of Law Shawn Grindstaff is a 24 year veteran of the natural resources and environmental field serving in a variety of capacities legal and otherwise After graduating with a B A cum laude from Southeast Missouri State University in 1989 Grindstaff moved to Wyoming in 1990 to focus on legal and masters level studies related to natural resources and the environment He attended law school at the University of Wyoming receiving his J D in 1993 He has been a member of the Missouri Bar since 1994 and has served as in house counsel in both higher education and private sector settings Grindstaff is a long time attorney mediator in the natural resources and environmental fields having a deep and varying level of practice history in both national and international contexts In addition to private sector mediation practice he has also worked for the U S Forest Service directed an environmental studies center and served on numerous national and international work groups and planning groups Currently Grindstaff is an Attorney Advisor for the U S Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 in St Louis Missouri email sgrindstaff44 gmail com COURSES 609 Current Developments in American Law Oil
