  • Juvenile Justice | School of Law | SIU
    has completed the first year of legal studies and is in good academic standing See the School of Law Rules relating to Clinics and Field Placements document for more details about enrollment in clinical courses Those students who wish to utilize an Illinois Student Practice License 711 License must have completed 45 hours of law credit and be in good academic standing Having a 711 License allows students to represent clients and appear in court under the supervision of a licensed attorney Even though non 711students may not actually represent clients in court they still may enroll in this course and will be allowed and required to attend court with the supervising attorney and perform work in all other aspects of the course Legal Services Students enrolled in the Juvenile Justice Clinic work with an experienced clinic attorney and perform legal services and duties to minors for whom the clinic attorney has been appointed guardian ad litem The guardian ad litem represents the best interests of these minors for whom neglect abuse or dependency petitions have been filed in Jackson County Illinois Students improve or enhance the following legal skills through the Juvenile Justice clinical experience Factual Investigations Reviewing Court

    Skills I and II engage students in a critical understanding of the different models of lawyering and legal practice as well of professionalism and the ethical practice of law Students learn about legal analysis and reasoning legal writing legal research client interviewing client counseling advocacy and negotiation While the course encourages the development of excellent individual skills students also learn to work cooperatively with classmates The feature that sets SIU s approach to lawyering skills apart however is its understanding of the complex relationships between legal doctrine legal theory and legal skills In Lawyering Skills I and II skills are not presented as separate from law but rather as interconnected We offer simulation based learning in addition to the typical classroom instructional model We offer small class sizes where active learning and student centered teaching techniques are used Problem solving and transactional lawyering skills which are often neglected in curricula at other law schools are an important part of the course Finally while we offer our students challenges we also offer them support At Southern Illinois University School of Law our goal is to train lawyers who will be equipped to be active agents for change and improvement of the

    speakers reflect orally and in writing on observations and other experiences and observe professionals in action among other activities Through these experiences students gain a better appreciation for the values of the profession Professional Development has been an important part of our first year program since the 2000 2001 academic year It has received both national recognition the American Bar Association s E Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award in 2003 2004 and statewide recognition the Illinois Supreme Court s Commission on Professionalism replicated our Induction Ceremony at other Illinois law schools Although this program preceded the Carnegie report it fulfills the report s call for greater professionalism education coming from the profession the courts and the academy Interdisciplinary Ethics Day Interdisciplinary Ethics Day at SIU School of Law brings together over 250 first year students from multiple graduate programs Southern Illinois University for a half day program on ethics and professional conduct with clients Students from law medicine and social work meet in small interdisciplinary groups to discuss a cutting edge and complex hypothetical case involving aspects of quality of care patient autonomy legal rights and professional licensure ethics Students then join together in a large group and hear how a panel of experts from each of their respective fields would have addressed the same hypothetical This unique program demonstrates how various professions must work together to improve the outcomes of their clients while offering an opportunity for students to learn from each other Oath Drafting Workshop After a brief orientation to the core values of the legal profession first year law students participate in an oath drafting workshop Working in small groups with members of the bench and bar students reflect on their obligations to their future clients to their profession to society and to themselves and prepare a Declaration
